- A R C A N I N E  I N F O R M A T I O N -

This information is mostly my own creation. Though some of the info' here does remain intact from the Nintendo version, most of it is mine, and I would appreciate it greatly if you did not steal it -- otherwise I shall be very very cross! The reason I have wrote the Arcanine info like this is because I wanted to put a more detailed section up, to help understand the Full Howl Arcanine's lifestyles a little better, and also, to reflect the information found in my shrines -- Pika*moon and White Curse -- a bit more. As well as that, it makes a usually boring section a damn sight more interesting.

- English name - Arcanine

- Japanese name - Uindei

- Weight - The largest Arcanine can weigh around 342.0 lbs

- Height - Usually around one metre at the shoulder, though larger species have been recorded.

- Scientific name - Lupes arcis

- Element - Fire

- Type - Legandary (or to some, wolf)

- Pokedex number - # 59

- Appearence - A deep red-orange colour, with dark (usually black or umber) stripes running down its body. The belly is either black or white, and the muzzle, mane, tail, chest and ankles, are all covered with white hair. It is a wolf Pokemon, with extremely strong jaws that match those of a hyena, and has long, muscular legs designed for both speed and stamina. The eyes are usually brown, though other shades are occasionally reported. Rarely is an Arcanine seen with fur other than orange.

- Evolution - In the wild, an Arcanine can evolve from growlithe naturally, especially when exposed to other fire types, or magma. However, in captivity, the cramped conditions of a Poke ball and living quarters, as well as other factors like in-breeding, keeps growlithe from evolving without the use of a Fire Stone.

- Habitat - Arcanine live in open plains, where there are plenty of prey -- their favourite being Rapidash and Ponyta. They tend to stay away from forested areas, partially to do with their colouring, and partially to do with the fear of setting a forest alight with their flames.

- Food - The Arcanine is a hunter. Its favourite food, as said above, are the horse Pokemon, Rapidash and Ponyta. They catch these with their great speed. Other large Pokemon, like Stantler and Miltank, are commonly taken also. A lone Arcanine can survive well on smaller prey, sometimes taking creatures as small as rabbits and Nidoran. They are not dissuaded by carrion, and eat it whenever possible. Occasionally, cattle and sheep (both Pokemon and animal alike) are taken from farmers.

- Reproduction - Arcanine usually mate around February-March time. Only the alpha male and female are allowed to have offspring, though it is known for the lower members of the pack to take a mate, but not reproduce. The gestation period is around two and a half months.
The mother gives birth in a small den in the ground. This is the only time an Arcanine takes to living in the forest, or underground. Only the mother and her growlithes live in the den; the father sleeps outside, and with help from the other members of the pack, brings meat for the female. UsuallY, four to six pups are born.
The pups stay underground until they are about two to three weeks old. When their eyes open, they generally take more interest in the world, and the parents let them venture outside. This is an extremely dangerous time for the cubs. There are many predators willing to take a young growlithe pup.
For the first 4 to 6 weeks, the pups will drink their mother's milk. However, during this time they will be introduced to meat. During the weaning process, the parents (and sometimes others) will regurgitate partially digested meat for the young to eat. When they are finally are eating solids, the mother takes them out to learn how to hunt.
After a year of living at the den, some of the cubs will disperse (both male and female) and others will stay on at the pack.

- Voice - Arcanine's voice is a rough sound between a bark and a growl when calling to a nearby member. However, they can also howl, usually to get in touch with members of their pack, sometimes members of another pack, and on occasion, when they are feeling lonely or in anguish. A whimper can be both interpreted as either a gesture of happiness, or one of pain or sadness. A snarl is a sign of viciousness, and a growl usually used as a warning.

- Senses - Like most canine, the Arcanine's best sense is its powerful nose. It uses its nose to help track prey and the like. Another good sense is its ears, good for communication and hunting. The eyesight is not great, but important, and they, unlike non-Pokemon canine, can actually see in various shades of colour. Touch and taste are un-important.

- Habits - An extremely fast Pokemon, with the ability to reach speeds of 45 mph when running flat out. Credited for its agility, it has been said to appear as if it is 'flying' when it sprints. Also attributed to it is its beauty; the flowing fur of rich oranges and golds with the defining black stripes similar to those of a tiger. Arcanine is a social creature, and prefers company to being alone. Packs usually contain either just two Arcanine (usually mates or siblings), up to 30 members. The usual number is no more than 14.

- Predators and hunting - Usually, an Arcanine has no predators in its natural habitat, apart from the Charizard. Humans are the main problem for the fire wolf.
The fur trade is a big thing when it comes to Arcanine skins. Probably the most popular of all Pokemon skins, it has only within the last 50 years become illegal in most parts of the world (apart from certain areas in Asia) to buy or sell an Arcanine fur. They are a legally protected species. However, this does not stop skins reaching the Black Market, and Arcanine are still killed.
Also, growlithe are often taken from the wild to serve as battlers. Arcanine are rarely taken due to the fact they are nearly untrainable, but, growlithe are more naive and far easier to train than their grown up relatives. Less growlithe mean less Arcanine, and currently, a ban is being forced upon to stop Pokemon from being taken from the wild to be trained to fight one another.
