Lupton Book in Print
After years of research, a genealogy, "The Luptons of North Carolina" Vol. I
is in print. Gladys Ives Holton and Shirley Duell Edwards are co-authors of a 330 page,
soft bound publication printed by Morgan Printer's in Greenville, NC. It was presented to
the 26th annual Lupton Reunion at Whortonsville, NC on Sunday, August 8,1982, at which
time a special dedication service took place. The book has some 400 biographical sketches,
480 pictures, art work, and poetry contributed by family tradition passed down through the
ages. It is a lively book about real people, well indexed, listing approximately 1,400
Luptons and 600 related families.
The North Carolina Lupton's are all descendants of Christopher Lupton, who ship-wrecked
during a violent storm on the coast near Cedar Island about 1769, and Elizabeth Robinson,
daughter of Joseph and Ann Robinson of Cedar Island. He is the only Lupton head of
household listed in the 1790 NC Census. They had six children. The sons were JOHN, JOSIAH,
SILAS, and ALLEN LUPTON. These men were early settlers of Carteret, Beaufort, Craven,
Hyde, and Pamlico Counties where many of their descendants still live. Both of their
daughters, Marcy and Annis, were married to a Randolph Daniels. Of the related families,
the earlier and most frequently seen ones were Bishop, Daniels, Day, Fulcher, Gaskill,
Goodwin, Ireland, Jones, Lewis, Potter, Sadler, Salter, Sawyer, Smith, Spain, Styron and
Taylor. Together these families and many more settled eastern North Carolina. Many
migrated from the shores of New Jersey during the 1700's as these same names appear as
settlers of the New England states, as well as New York and New Jersey.
The authors are very proud of their Lupton heritage. They have enjoyed visits with
Lupton descendants from Raleigh to the coast and hope to continue interviews and research
with plans to have a Volume II in print in a few years.
Gladys started her genealogy research in 1965. She is the daughter of Mrs. Charlie
Reddin Ives of Rt. 2, Aurora, NC and resides at Reelsboro, NC in Pamlico County. Shirley
started her research in 1970. She is the daughter of Mrs. Ruby Lupton Duell and spouse of
Albert Lee Edwards Sr. of Bridgeton, NC in Craven County. The authors combined their
efforts in 1974 and have written what they fell will be a welcomed addition to all Lupton
and descendants' libraries. This book is also an addition to the shelves of many North
Carolina public libraries, community college libraries and the Archives in Raleigh. The
book sells for $35.00 + 2.50 postage, handling and tax.
