Wow.  So summer draws to a close. People like to act like its a gradual thing, like
autumn and cold will slowly creep up and pull us slowly and surely into the depths of winter. And yet yearly, these same people act pretty damn surprised when Fall rears its ugly head, its jaws snap closed like a steel trap on our fleeing ankles, and we are hauled kicking and screaming and dumped enceremoniously into the dark land of Wisconsin Winter.
For me, the beginning of this jolt into winter was moving. I had been living, and quite blissfully, I might add, in a fraternity house I rented a room from over the summer. Its an Engineering frat, (Triangle) and yet somehow I fell in nicely and had a total blast with the people in the house.  Eventually, my boyfriend Mark moved from
Milwaukee and stayed with me for a bit there as well, and now is renting another room out of the same fraternity whilst I move back into the dorms. *shudder*  So yes, back to the dorms it is. I moved my crap in over the last two days, but for the moment I have been spending my time here at the fraternity and at my buddies' house. Nick, Elliot and Earl, all former fraternity-livers like myself, got a place just down the road from the house, so its easy stumbling distance.  Oh yea, the dorm I happen to be living in isnt too far from the one I was in last year, but a little closer to things, and its an upper-classmen dorm. Specifically, it happens to be the Spanish floor of the International Learning Community. Hopefully that will be a good thing rather than a bad one.
Now comes the buying of the books, another clincher. I've been working all summer at the University of Wisconsin Survey Center, which does academic research for the State, for the Sociology department and other legitimate organizations that can afford us.  I even got a little pay raise because now I am one of only two employees who can conduct our interviews in Spanish.  And since many of our projects are nation-wide and wish to specifically target minorities who have not yet 'had a say' so to speak, I'm a valuable commodity. And its easy work, so I have no complaints. Actually I like my job, I've had many worse. I've managed to stockpile up some cash, but I fear it will soon be transformed into books. I'm currently signed up for 18 credits this semester. Thasts a lot. I have a sneaky suspicion I will be dropping one., but I dont know which one yet, so I have to buy books anyways. *sigh*
Apparently, a light may shine at the end of my financial dark tunnel. I got called about a scholarship I applied to a few weeks ago, and they want to set up an interview with me. So, wish me luck. I could use some fuckin cash.
Oh! Guess what? For all of you who know P.C., my dad- John Carrier, just turned 50 years old. We had a sweet surprise party for him, and I discovered my dad has great taste in music... his favorite bands include: The Doors, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, Creedence Clearwater, Jimmi Hendrix, and the list goes on. For now I'm still less than half my dad's age. But that wont last.
So, I'm going to be going to St Croix from December 28th until January 9th, staying with Mark's parents on island. Promises to be a friggin sweet vacation. So that will be a nice reward for finishing the semester this year. Its going to be a tough one. 18 credits
(if I keep them all) plus work and extra-curricular stuff. Yike.  Oh yea speaking of which, I've been lifting weights and its awsome, I'm losing back some of the weight I had gained before last year again, and I feel great. Hopefully I'll get some nice pics of my and my muscles sometime after I become sufficiently proud. :)
In the projected future, looks like I'm going to do a year abroad in Spain or possibly Argentina or Ecuador next year. Probably, but not definite yet. I'd sure like to get out for a while. Any thoughts or suggestions on that should definitely be voiced.
Meanwhile, uh, I dont know what else you could possibly want to know. But hey, if there is anything, feel free to write me, [email protected], I love hearing from all you old buddies.
  Later,
Jess
