REDUCTION OF LIMB AND CRATER TIMINGS
The table below summarizes results from the reduction
of 263 limb and crater timings made by 13 experienced observers of the
Brazilian Observational Astronomy Network during the Nov. 08-09 2003 total
lunar eclipse. The timings indicate an umbral enlargement factor for immersions
(2.06±0.05)%
(influenced by the atmosphere over the South Polar regions) that is relatively
high and which is significantly larger than the one for emersions (1.85±0.10)% (corresponding to mid-southern latitudes). Such
difference corresponds to an asymmetry of about 11% in the umbral enlargement
factors. For comparison purposes, umbral enlargement factors equal to (1.88±0.05)% and (1.74±0.12)% have been found by the author from the
reduction of REA`s 214 contact timings of the May 15-16 2003 eclipse. All
timings are now being averaged to yield a single data set from which further
conclusions are to be drawn. The investigations are now aimed at determining
how the observed radius of the umbra varied with the umbral angle during the
eclipse.
