| Summer Reading 2004 | |||||||
| Lunenburg High School requires that every student participate in our summer reading program by reading ONE book during the summer break. In September, students will demonstrate that they read their books by participating in a book discussion and possibly taking a short quiz. A pass/fail grade will be recorded on the student's transcript. Participation in the book discussion is required to receive recognition of participation on their official transcript. Absent students will have one week to take the quiz to fulfill this requirement. This is truly a district-wide event; the Superintendent, high school administrators, teachers and community members sponsor books. This gives administrators and faculty members the opportunity to meet students outside the typical classroom setting, and gives students the chance to discuss subjects of interest in the book discussion. A list of sponsored books is attached to this letter. Although students are only required to read one book, we encourage them to read additional books from the list. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Mrs. Vallee (LHS Librarian) at 582-4115 x 105 or [email protected] WHO? All students who will be in grades nine through twelve next fall will participate in this school-wide summer reading program. Honors and advanced placement courses may require some students to do additional reading. These students will be notified in a separate memo. WHAT? All students must read ONE book over the summer break from the attached list. Please write down three book choices - first, second and third. There is a limit of 25 students per book. Copies of the books will be available in the LHS library for students, parents and guardians to preview. All are invited to visit the library during regular school hours (please sign in at the main office for a visitor's pass) or on Wednesday, May 19 from 6:00-7:30 pm to examine the books on the list Students should take a look at the reading level and subject matter before making a choice, and discuss their choices with parents. Parents or guardians need to sign the permission slip accepting a student's three choices. Your selection is a commitment to read the book. You may not switch to a different book later. You may not read the same book as last year (if offered again). WHEN & HOW? Select a book (and two alternate choices) between Wednesday, May 12 and Wednesday, June 2 by returning the signed slip (bottom of next page) to Mrs. Vallee in the library. Anyone not signed up before the end of school will receive an automatic "F" for a summer reading grade next fall, and will not be able to participate in this rewarding and enjoyable book discussion. Students, parents and guardians are invited to come to the LHS Library on Wednesday, May 19 from 6:00-7:30 pm to examine the books on the Summer Reading list Turn your slip in ASAP because books are assigned on a first come-first serve basis (and the limit is 25 students per book)! Mrs. Vallee will let you know through your homeroom which of the three books to read All students are responsible for getting a copy of their book (borrowed or purchased). If you own your own copy of the book, do not be afraid to mark favorite passages or jot down your thoughts in the margins as many readers do. This will not only help you recall your reading experiences for others who have chosen the same title, but will make the book into a record of what you were like in the summer of 2004. While reading the book it may help you to list short descriptions of character, keep a chapter-by-chapter summary/response log or list main conflicts as they occur. This way you can review your notes to refresh your memory just prior to meeting with other students and an adult who have chosen to read the same book. This will be especially helpful if you do your required reading early in the summer. WHERE? Purchase or borrow your book early in the summer some books may be hard to get, so order early! The LHS library will lend our copies of summer reading books to Ritter Memorial Library over the summer for students to check out. Borrow the book from Ritter Memorial Library in Lunenburg. If a copy is not available, ask Ritter (or your towns public library) if a copy can be borrowed from another library through Inter Library Loan (a free service). Purchase a copy at a local bookstore. The book list will be distributed to Barnes & Noble in Leominster and Waldenbooks at Searstown Mall. If purchasing, try to find a paperback copy whenever possible. Students/parents should also check online for new and used books at amazon.com and bn.com (Barnes & Noble). ************************************************************************************* Return this slip to the LHS LIBRARY by June 2, 2004 STUDENT'S NAME: _______________________________________________ HOMEROOM TEACHER: ___________________________________________ Title of book you have chosen to read: First choice: ______________________________________________ Second choice: ____________________________________________ *Third choice: _____________________________________________ *If all three choices already have 25 students, you will be asked to choose again Parent/guardians signature _________________________________________ A list will be sent to your homeroom teacher indicating which book you should read over the summer. |
