For those of you who have no idea what "the Legion" is, it's really quite embarrassing for me to give a full explanation; however, Convention Summer 2000 was basically just a big get together of friends before most of us headed off for our first taste of college. The picture above and most of the pictures I have depict the more interesting public speaking portion of the convention (hence the name convention), one in which I, uh, took part Anyway, enjoy the pictures . . .
This picture shows (I think) the back of Derek's head, Orian, and Evan gathered in front of the Nguyen family entertainment system (Oh yeah, this is Mike's house by the way--I forget if this is the time we actually got persmission to use it . . .). It's not terribly clear who in the picture is using the game system, though it's probably a good bet that Evan isn't...
I have no clue whose idea it was to have four people each bring a computer and hook them up together to play games on multiplayer, but it apparently worked . . .
Sometimes our friend Orian receives alien messages from his home planet through psychic means. On this occasion, I believe they were telling him what an idiot he was, which is why he appears so gloomy. Actually, the truth is stranger. Orian has a bit of an obsession for this dumb movie called "Gladiator" (you might have heard of it), and what this picture shows is him listening to the soundtrack and making hand motions corresponding to the intensity of the music. And why he is sitting on half of a pillow I don't know.
So, back to the speaking stuff . . . For lack of a podium, we took a derelict computer casing, turned it on its side, and put it on a glass-top patio table. The presence of the blue bowl baffles me. Note how Orian appears to be used to these sorts of makeshift speaking accomodations and casually balances his speech over the edge of the computer casing.
In the audience, the sight of a chair has suddenly made Wes surprised and happy. The rest of the audience (someone, Matt, Evan, and Nick) also appears intrigued by Orian's speech.
At some point it became quite fashionable to throw Jolly Ranchers at our engrossing speaker. The one I have just thrown is the small red blob in the middle of the picture.
Orian's reaction . . . As I said in my deceased proto-site, I have about 80 pictures of Orian ducking and blocking with an arm as depicted here. Yet, one could not help but be moved by his bravery and valor in continuing his speech despite the harrowing onslaught. Well, not really. But it sounded good, right?
And that, is how we do that.
