LET THE NIGHT ESCAPE
Let the night escape
Stop running ; don't double back
Let it get away
Don't cross 51st Ave
and cut behind the hardware store
(tearing at the pavement)
Don't watch it go
Blinking like a clock reset
In the red and green and yellows
Don't curse it out - it can't hear you
And your cry is unintelligible anyways
Don't climb out the window
Breakneck down the fire escape
praying to grab a pinch with a fist
There's nothing you have to do
But go to bed

I sat and watched a movie
that made my blood pressure spike
I washed a cup and then I washed another
I opened the door and walked-
in and out several times
I put food on a tray
for our lord and savior
I held the attention of a generation of myself
for a little bit too long
my wife told me she had a dream
an unatended machine rinting
foreboding pictures
I washed a fistful of fruit and then I dried it
listening to little footsteps and little voices
the world is not an easy place to live
I was being an umpire telling her to sit and eat
and to him to guard his heart
I think about rushing water
all the rivers inside of me
the places we cannot see
