Notes on They Come to Me

This story holds the record for the shortest story I ever wrote, and the longest title so far. It, too, arose from a challenge. Alonia challenged that we write to turn ordinary settings into dark settings, and provided the first sentence of the piece. I thought nothing could be more horrific than the guilt that must cling to Seifer Almasy's psyche(do you get the feeling I'm a little obsessed?), so that's what I wrote about.

One small tidbit is, you can actually tell where these spectres are from; the descriptions and the list of place names is in the same order. Therefore, the burned child is from Trabia Garden, the old woman shot in the head from Balamb, the disemboweled soldier from Esthar, and the boy with the slit throat from Galbadia(probably Galbadia Garden). Gruesome, but that's war.

I really like the background image for this one, too. (You can see it if your browser supports cascading style sheets.) I took the image on the main page, used PhotoDeluxe to apply a cloud texture, then posterized it. I'm not an image manipulation guru by any stretch of the imagination, but the image does seem to have turned out suitably eery.
