My productions, when film is not an option, are almost always shot with the Panasonic AG-DVX100A camera. Film is extremely expensive and video tends to always feel like... well, like crap. (This is excluding $20,000+ dollar cameras and HD cameras of course... I'm talking about cameras the public can reasonably afford.) I never really took a prosumer level camera seriously until I started working with this one. The image quality that this camera puts out for the price range it's in is great. To me, if you shoot correctly and do camera tests and use light meters, it can put out an image quality that looks like 16mm film transferred to video. This is a very different aesthetic than an image originally shot with a video camera vs. an image shot on film. There is an obvious change from film to video because of the loss in lines of resolution. 16mm has close to three or four thousand lines of resolution. Once it's knocked down and transferred to broadcast level, it goes down to about 700 lines. If you're looking for a video camera to rival film directly, go talk to George Lucas and check out the Cine-Alta. If you want a decently priced camera that still has the look of a film based shoot, than I'd recommend this one. Compression is a fact of life in the world of video so you might as well get a camera that does it well.
I am not responisble for audio while operating the camera unless under packages #3, #4, and #6 where professional audio is included. The built-in microphone can pick up a decent signal but I would not rely on it. The camera has 2 XLR inupts and can easily accept a signal from a sound mixer. I can easily adjust the level to meet the sound mixer's needs. Package #3 and #6 audio requirements must have one subject. (I cannot operate a camera and boom two or more people at once.) Package #4 includes a boom operator and can follow the subject in motion where as the other packages cannot.
I am a proficient Final Cut Pro editor. I have some skill with AVID Media Composer but not nearly as much experience as I do with FCP. I have been editing local commercials and TV spots for 3180 Media Group as well as taking on a few small independent productions. My project rate varies depending on the size and demands of the particular work. Approx. $400 for 6 hours. (rates are based on 1/2 days and full days, not hours.)
