Your Girlfriend is Sailor Moon?
Two things have brought me to this point. The first was a comment yesterday from a person I consider below the scum of the earth.
I was in the process of shutting down the computer lab where I work, and was shooing people out. I casually mentioned to a person who asked if I was in a hurry that my favorite show was on.
A couple of minutes later, this brain surgeon comes into the room and asks me if I am going to watch my "girlfriend"? When I gave him a puzzled look, he replied, "Sailor Moon, isn't she your girlfriend?"
I replied "No", told him that my favorite show happened to be Star Trek, and walked away. Later I told my friend Dave, "If I ever start fantasizing about Sailor Moon, SHOOT ME!"
The second thing that motivated my writing this was a HTML address I got while on a Yahoo chat line about Sailor Moon. While I won't divulge the address, I was told that it contained hentai of Sailor Moon.
Don't get me wrong. Sailor Moon is kinda cute, in an anime sort of way...and the writers weren't thinking of anyone's sensibilities when they drew in the hemlines for these girls' hero uniforms. In fact, Sailormoon (that's how I will distinguish the japanese original from the NA dub) had a lot more sexually explicit scenes than the NA dub ever thought of taking out. Examples: The original scenes where Nephlyte scans Molly for evidence of the star crystal, and Amy's scene where she receives new powers after talking to herself.
So, hentai is there. But there is a difference. Hentai in the cases I used as examples were used as writing tools to convey a certain mood or action. The Molly scene to me, suggested an intrusion, a near rape of a girl who was unaware of the intrusion. The Amy scene suggested the infusion of power as her uniformed self merged with her naked self.
Hentai used as a part of the story is not "dirty", but when such a thing crosses a line, it displays the depravity to which our society has shrunk. If you find yourself daydreaming about a cartoon girl, GET A FRICKIN LIFE! Even better, call the police and turn yourself in after you request an evaluation at your state's mental institution. (The one in Wyoming is located at Evanston.)
