You're first impression of Kyou is a rude, brash, over-confident teenage kid with a bad temper. As the anime/manga goes along however, you see that he really has a gentle heart. It's just hard for him to show it. He always says things out of the moment and never thinks about them first. Usually he ends up regretting saying them. Kyou wants to defeat Yuki because then he thinks he'll be excepted as a true member of the Sohma family. Unfortunatly, Kyou has been training martail arts sense he was a little kid and still can't beat Yuki.
Throughout the entire anime/manga he wears a black and white beaded bracelet and you really don't notice until the 24th episode of the anime and you realize it in this episode because the bracelet is taken off his wrist. When it's taken off Kyou transforms into the revengful spirit of the cat, a monster.
Kyou has always been looked down upon, regretted ever been born. Even his mom was scared of him. All Kyou wanted was for her to love him but she died when he was seven years old and Kazume Sohma adopted him. treating him like a real son, uncursed by the cat. Kyou finally felt loved and at home but wouldn't call him father, because he wanted Kazume to be proud of saying, "I'm his dad." before Kyou would call him dad.
So... It turns out really that the rude, brash, over-confident teenage boy was really just a boy without any confidence at all.
