Egg Inspiration: On September 27, 2003 Araneth and Teharyth's Clutch Hatched, calling excited Candidates from the barracks, weyrfolk from their caverns, and dragonriders from their weyrs, and drew a group of ten candidates into the world of the dragonriders, their new Lifemates at their side. Weyrlinghood came in a whirlwind, sweeping these new Weyrlings into the full swing of training. Weyrlingmaster N'all and his assistants, K'vay, G'mar, and J'mis, bronzeriders, the lot of them, had included another into their ranks, a lone bluerider that had Impressed at the previous Hatching, P'nell. This special team of Weyrlingmasters whipped the raw Weyrlings into shape, producing for the Weyrleader's scrutiny at the Graduation, a new set of riders, ready and able to enter the ranks of the fighting wings. New riders were tapped into wings and grew and changed. The Weyrlingmasters moved on and changed. Things don't always stay the same. They're ever-changing, but some things will always be steady.
Hatching Message: Sparks fairly leap from the shell of the Once and Again Egg, particles of ash billowing among flecks of heated cinder only to settle to earth as harmless char. Spirals of flame radiate outward, a firestorm heralded by a single echoing crack leaving polished copper in tatters and a triumphant Hatchling in survey of its spoils, heedless of the shards of stormy blue lying unbroken behind.
Obscured Horizons Hatchling: Here one moment and gone the next is this Hatchling, its mutable, wraith-like shape gliding eerily across the sands. Vaporous curtains, translucent as frosted glass, cloaks hide in obliterating gauze. As though seen in an imperfect far-viewer's scope, details waver, the distinct becoming indiscernible in a single drawn breath and then shifting back again. Points of focus blur: the tilt of a muzzle, the advance of questing talons, each metamorphosing into vagueness, each shifted from reality. Was it there? Was it seen? Or do the light, the weather, and the heat of the sands conspire against eyes?
Public Impression Message: The sands no longer hold the attention of the Obscured Horizons Hatchling like they once did, instead it shifts, attempting to find, somewhere, that certain someone among all those Candidates. As often happens in a rainstorm, the light shifts, or the rain for a moment lessens. All it takes is a heartbeat, and the Obscured Horizons Hatchling resolves into a Season's Mantle Brown Hatchling. The inevitable has already happened though, for the Hatchling stands resolutely before a very tall young woman, muzzle reaching out to nudge her midriff lovingly.
Personal Impression Message: The rain pounds relentlessly, and the cacophony of the hatching roars in your ears. In a rush of experience, all becomes clear and sharp. Each raindrop is a world unto itself, yet flows from one form to another as what feels solid turns liquid against your skin. Time slows, and everything melds together: sun seems to caress your face, frost chills your fingers, rain splashes against your feet and something new blooms in your heart. It is then that you realize you are not alone and in that instant your thoughts are joined by a sound so refreshing, so sweet, so full of admiration as it washes away all other cares and concerns. << It is wonderful, is it not? >> the voice asks, melding all the experience into one existence and love. Unabashed, unrestricted love, every raindrop, every shout, every moment of heat. << I am Callenth, >> he says. << And you are Zafirah. We belong together! >>
Season's Mantle Brown Hatchling: Each season melds into the next, though each is distinct in the changes it brings: sun, rain, frost and snow, all acknowledged in this brown hatchling's hide. The remnants of summer's sun highlight flanks in the vivid rusted reds and dappled yellows of a northern hardwood forest, unseen winds dancing with frost-rimed amber leaves to scatter them across haunches. Spring sunlight caresses his muzzle, warming it to ginger sandstone -- his head freshly washed by winter's last trace, which gradually melts away. Darker runnels trickle against the earthy loam and lichen of his belly while leaf buds redden to mahogany down his legs, an anticipation of life that concludes in loamy talons. Winter's storms roil across pinions and shadows loom ominously over leading edges, the barren darkness of his wingsails patterned by bright heliotrope and lily petals that tenaciously cling with rain's dampness.
Description Inspiration - The Four Seasons: Callenth takes his inspiration from the composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741). Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy on March 4, 1678 to a professional violinist. He was ordained a priest in 1703 and began teaching at the Ospedale della Pieta, a conservatory for orphaned girls. Vivaldi wrote more than 500 concertos and over 70 sonatas; about 45 operas; and religious music, including oratorios, masses, and motets, though he remains perhaps most well known for his 'The Four Seasons' concertos, from which Callenth's description takes his inspiration. Vivaldi took four Sonnets written by himself and describing each of the four seasons and produced a set of four violin concertos. Each of the Sonnets is expressed in a concerto, which in turn divided into three phrases or ideas of each concerto. 'The Four Seasons' have a timeless appeal to both performers and listeners.
Name - Callenth: Callenth, which is pronounced 'CAL-lenth', was inspired by the word 'a capella' which is a vocal work sung without any musical accompaniment, mainly a group of singers sing without any instruments. The theme of musical terms for the names was picked to counter the theme of composers and music writers that was used for the personalities of the dragons. The root word and name were devised by J'cin.
Temper: Generally, Callenth is a contented dragon, just thrilled to be with you, his love, as well as enjoying the pleasures of the world around him. He's an observant one, noticing not only objects and the emotions of those around him but particularly the contrasts: beauty where there is ugliness. How sweet the joys of life, when you see how fleeting they are! The rhythms of life, as much as his draconic memory will allow him to observe, fascinate him.
In you he sees all the potential in the world -- you are his one true companion. He will gently encourage you to push your boundaries, explore new places and discover new things. Never will he imply that you're not living up to your potential, of course, but he will nudge you in directions you may never have thought of.
He'll be a speedy brown, once he gets going. He might not be precocious, as some of his clutchmates are, but he will soon develop into a more than competent dragon. He'll play with new ideas, develop his own style as he matures and then apply that style to nearly everything he does, giving it a personalized flourish. Why not draw attention, after all, to your skills? Unlike Jaonth, Callenth does not fear the limelight.
Visiting dragons from other Weyrs will kindle his desire for travel. << They fight Thread differently at Xanadu, >> he may inform you, << So Ceruth said. >> It won't be long before he rejoices at the news that you're on messenger duty -- all the better to meet new dragons and learn new things! He will like to see new places, not so much to catch the sights but to interact with other dragons of similar talents. Unsurprisingly, he may try to adopt some of the characteristic fighting styles of those he admires, though always with his own flair. As well, although dragons aren't known for forming parental bonds per se, Callenth will likely attempt to form one with his sire. Whether or not the interest is reciprocated, your Callenth will model himself after his sire, learning from examples set and taking any offered advice to heart.
In Weyrlinghood and later in your Wing, Callenth will be a perfectionist. He will always be pushing his boundaries in terms of performing at the far reaches of his limits and may need to be reprimanded for attempting to go Between too close to the ground, or in performing too tight a turn for his abilities. He'll rarely push beyond his true limits, though, so you will often find yourself caught between his knowledge that he was safe, and the Weyrlingmaster or your Wingleader's desire to prevent injury. He may patiently ask, << I can turn tightly, can't I? It's fun to change directions, feel the wind over my wings and your happiness. I know the Weyrlingmaster does not wish us to turn so quickly, but I can. Why shouldn't I? >> Nevermind that the turn was done with a flamboyant flourish of his tail, seeking approval for his daring maneuver. He will indeed seek approval, especially from you, but also from his sire, the Weyrlingmaster, and any pretty greens that may be watching. He is a good student, despite or perhaps because of this desire to perform. Lessons learned in one exercise are readily transferred to a second, often without explicitly being requested by the Weyrlingmaster. He's quick to recognize a successful theme and incorporate it into the next exercise.
If a thought occurs to him, you will need to be his note-taker for at any time, day or night. In the middle of drills or while hovering over a kill at the feeding grounds, he may notice something or think of something he wants to remember. << That was a pretty white flower, >> he may comment, << Before my herdbeast trampled it. >> The image, or rather the contrast between beauty and violence, is one he may wish to review later -- as other dragons collect rocks or shells he collects memories, with you to catalog them.
Callenth will develop many lasting friendships over the Turns, with greens as well as other colors. He'll likely find one or two greens, however, whose company he prefers over others. While this will develop primarily in his later Turns, it may begin with his clutchmates soon after graduation: << Sarabeth my rider and I go to Ierne. Have you ever been there? Isn't the sunshine wonderful there? They use a double-inverted-diamond formation when the winds are strong, Instead of the formation we do. You would be good at that. Will you and yours come and learn? >> Alright, so perhaps you and he are really going to deliver a package, but this way he may have a traveling companion and further excuse to ask other dragons about their techniques.
When it comes to flights, however, he will chase any and all, green or gold, with glee and a certain flourish -- occasionally he may become so caught up in the performance that he neglects to focus on the goal at hand! With precision flying, taking enjoyment from unnerving the more stolid chasers, relishing in the pure freedom of the chase, he may over-exert himself early or become lost in the pack of chasers. However, when he does manage to catch a mate he will be attentive and sweet, until the memory of it fades. He'll prompt you to share with him all the vivid images of beauty he has shared with you, so he may impart them to his lovely companion.
If he is lucky enough to capture a gold, he will be smug at his achievement, not above letting everyone know << Those are *my* offspring on the sands >>. And, to ensure that those offspring have every opportunity to reflect well on their sire he will want to be on the sands constantly, even to the detriment of his health, until they are safely hatched and delivered into the hands of their new lifemates. Even after they are hatched he will want to remember every single one of his offspring and will have you document each one. He will also want to keep in touch with all of them and will constantly be asking you to list them so he can check in and see how they are progressing, even after they have reached maturity.
When fighting Thread, instinct does take over in large part. He'll push his limits yes, but with a good respect for the fact that the limits here are pretty painful. It's after Fall that his desire for praise will resurface, with perhaps a good dose of exaggeration. << Did you see us, Eadranth? We seared three huge clumps at once, then turned around and got a fourth just before it would've hit a blue below us! >> The contrasts also will not be lost on him, with heightened appreciation for life after a close encounter with death raining from the heavens. However, even mid-Fall, he might observe the delicate greens of fresh growth on a tree far below, with appreciation.
As your Callenth matures, a trait will become apparent. He's very talented at instructing others, always patiently trying to rephrase instructions if another dragon does not appear to understand. This may initially cause you grief from the Weyrlingmaster staff, who often prefer to have control over how their charges are instructed, but may prove to be a boon once in a fighting wing or should you ever find yourselves in a more formalized instructional role.
Overall, Callenth is a dragon with a big heart but also a big head sometimes -- finding the happy medium will be your challenge. As well, keeping up with his enthusiasm will give your life meaning and focus, a known future into which you will travel together.
Voice: Calenth's voice is like an orchestra tuning, random snatches of thoughts and themes bubbling to the surface amid a pleasant hum of thought -- his voice in your mind is one of great range and flexibility. It can be bold and striking or melodic and mellow. Strings vibrate delicately in higher ranges, sharp on occasion and sweet on others, while deep basso thrums punctuate his musings. Discordant notes lend depth to his observations -- sometimes used as symbolism of his displeasure but more often to emphasize appreciation! Throughout all, beneath, around and through his main communication, there is an accompanying orchestra of thought, picking up the theme and exploring it. In communication, your Callenth is not concise. This is not a dragon that gets to his point quickly. Instead he rambles, meandering to his point and exploring other avenues along the way. Physically, his vocal range is limited by a dragon's vocal cords. Deep and expressive, his voice has the timbre of a fine-tuned bass string instrument, musical and lyrical.
Composer's Inspiration - Antonio Vivaldi: Callenth is based on the composer Antonio Vivaldi, who learned to play violin from his father, also a talented man. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1703 but within a year ceased to say mass, a choice that would later complicate his life by prejudicing others against him. He taught at a girl's 'orphanage', Ospedale della Pieta, but spent much time traveling with his companion Anna Giraud, though the exact nature of their relationship is unknown. Though not a poor man, Vivaldi invested and lost much money in the Opera and was a pauper at his death in Venice, in 1741. He established the concerto form as a Baroque instrumental standard, changing the face of music. Though he emulated the style of another composer of the time he popularized the fast-slow-fast style, with instrumental soloists accompanied by a 'competing' orchestra. He was also an expert violin player who pushed the limits of violin technique, amazing his audiences.
Why You?: In you, Callenth sees the ability to appreciate life in all its beauty, but also in all its ugliness, to find joy in both as well as sadness. He detected, even in those few minutes on the hot Sands, that beneath your quiet exterior you enjoy the thrill of pushing your limits as he does, even if you don't yet have the confidence to do so. No matter, as he will provide the encouragement to reach for the stars, widen your horizons to a world of possibility. But beyond this there is also balance, with each of you providing a foundation of love and understanding that the other needs to seek out that expansive new future. As well, Callenth has such trust in you, he knows you would never allow him to harm himself or wander too far off the path as he seeks to reach the heights.
Water and Flame Ring: Centered in a slim band of gleaming silver a trio of gemstones sparkle; one large baguette flanked by a smaller matched set insolently refusing to be defined by color. When struck by pure sunlight, aquatic shades of blue and violet mingle within the transparent stones, but when illuminated by glows they offer up warmer tones, an interplay of sultry yellows and reds.
