Introduction

The chief editor from OnliestTales.com, an on-line literary journal, is breathing down your neck for the latest installment in the "Greatest Writers You Never Knew" segment. She wants a story, a bio, some art and she wants it on-line by the end of the week . . .

You reach over, switch on the computer, and watch the screen come to life. How in the world am I supposed to rediscover Shakespeare?

The Task

Use the web and the links provided to chose a writer. Bear a couple of things in mind when you do:

  • The person you chose can be a writer or a poet.
  • Make sure the writer isn't one of the more famous or even prolific writers.
  • For your writer, chose one short story, for your poet 2-3 poems. (see me)
  • Try to find some connection between you and the writer, whether you're the same gender, same heritage, same writing interest etc.

  • Make sure there is sufficient material for you to report on.
With this information you will write a short biography of your writer, and a short synopsis of the story or the poems you read, you will also answer three questions that you will incorporate with some clip art into the final product, a web page about your writer and his/her writings. The web pages will be collected and presented on-line.

The Process

Step 1
Use the following links to find your desired writer or poet, using the criteria listed above:

 A Celebration of Women Writers
African American Women Writers of the 19th Century
 English Literature: Early 17th Century
Poetry and Prose of the Harlem Renaissance
 Project Gutenberg
 Victorian Women Writer's Project
Step 2
Use the following links to help you gather information on your writer or poet's life to supplement that which you already found using the links in Step 1.

Bartleby.com
Grolier Online
Encyclopedia Britannica

Step 3
Write a 2-3 page synopsis of the story/poetry you have chosen. Consider the three questions you will receive in class.

Step 4
Write a short (approximately 1 page) biography of your writer or poet.

Step 5
Using the basic html skills you will learn in class in addition to the template you will use the information and clip art you have gathered and processed to create a web page.

Conclusion

By the end of the week you will be able to manipulate basic HTML to create simple web pages, insert clip art, handle text, and upload files using the computer and the internet. We will have created our own version of "OnliestTales.com" and will have met and enjoyed a host of writers and poets we might otherwise never have.
