A variant of the RGM-79 GM, the RGM-79D GM Cold Climate Type was modified for use in harsh wintery climates. Produced late in the One Year War, the units were tested by Yu Kajima's elite MS combat performance analysis team. When they demonstrated how useful this Mobile Suit was against the Zeon's Mobile Suits, other units were deployed to other Federation bases.
