The first mass-produced Mobile Suit created by the Zeon for the One Year War, the Zaku I was the mainstay of the Zeon's Mobile Suit fleet until it was replaced by the MS-06F Zaku. The Zaku was not only used for combat, as was seen in Shiro Amada's flashback, where a Zaku launched two cannisters of G-3 Nerve Gas inside a Colony (Side 2), killing all its inhabitants. Near the end of the war, the Zaku I was re-introduced into combat when it became apparent that the Principality of Zeon was losing to the Federation. However, it didn't help too much and the Zeon were defeated.
