A solid smoke by Tam Borthick saw him tuck away 6 twenty decks. Rodrigez was clearly a shadow of the man who stunned the snout world last year when he reached the semi finals at his first attempt. The Mexican could only just manage to open his sixth deck as Borthwick reached for his seventh. It was obvious that the Scot was capable of going further and the Mexican conceded defeat as he stubbed out his 101st lum. After the encounter, Borthwick confidently announced to the media that he "feared no-one".

Carliga wins the 5 minute lum out: 18 - 16
Hzkiv Slkoz pulled off the performance of his career against bookies favourite Carliga. The two lummed themselves through to the end of the 2hr regulation time tied on 140. The Croatian had been holding a 5 lum advantage going into the last 5 minutes. The quality of Carliga was there for all to see as he reeked an amazing 7 lums to tie the score. Carliga, a veteran of the lum-out, left the dispondent Croatian trailing by two lums after the alotted 5 minutes. Hzkiv can take heart from this performance and look to the forthcoming European Championships.

Frank Weller (ENG) 155
130 (USSR) Ivan Grog

As defending champion, Frank Weller proved his worth with a 25 lum victory over the 1997 champion from the Soviet Union. Grog refused to give up and the result was called by officials after the full 2hrs. Frank was never under any threat from the Russian, storming in to an early lead. "I full intend to retain this title. I can beat anyone on a lum to lum basis" commented Weller at the following press conferrence which also hear Grog announce his retirement from international lumming. "I've been in this game for the last 20 years, achieved the highest honours. Now is the time for me to hang up my smokers jacket. I wish Frank all the best. Now is a time for a new generation of lummer." The sport will sadly miss this charismatic Russian and his trademark hat.

Louis Croisant (FRA) 81
90 (GER) Herman Multz
V
International lumming has seen some titanic battles between these two nations in the past with Herman Multz playing a part in some of the most dramatic. His defeat in the 1989 final to Croisants predesesor Dominique Latreine is remembered as one of the best in living memory. However the beleaguered German is not the man he used to be after the removal of his left lung in 1998. It was perhaps fortunate that he was paired up against Croisant. The young Frenchman is still in his international infancy and even against the handicapped German, he was incapable of bringing some of the glory days back to French smoking. This was an eventless encounter with the Germans ability to smoke through the pain barrier winning the encounter. Croisant will have to reasses his international credentials.
