Cupid’s fair Court

O’ fair Cupid

Justice is made your favorable vow

For your eyes are as skillfully trained

You do not award penitence to the virtuous

And no rulings do you overlook for the amoral

With thy satchel are arrows of two different spells

One of bounty;

Sent to befall the disheartened with affection

And another of leaden pulse

Purged are they to discourse even a detail of your wit

Oh hunter of hunters;

Could you not harbor a new charging dagger?

One that leads me not blind

And one too that in reunion never so resigns?

I have seen the slain blood of Pan;

Succumbed past the idleness of ardor

And I have seen the elite Daphne;

From whom her frail flower pedals must protect

‘Tis hopeless affinity and poison balms they imbibe

‘O fair cupid why is this so?

To shadow barren wiles with their youth?

I must believe they will at once assemble in the middle;

In eldest time

But how cruelest entice to fulfill the Arcadian with timidity;

And to consort in Eros’s vile temple

He is ripe and raised from your spear O’ cupid

Let him ravage her ashen beauty

Let her live but once in her yielding

That each with kindness may begin their voyage

Balance passion thus neglect oh great men and fem

O’ fair Cupid will bring a beginning thus the end
