NCSCOS: Competency Goal 3: The learner will make observations and conduct investigations to build an understanding of magnetism and electricity.

Objectives

3.01 Observe and investigate the pull of magnets on all materials made of iron and the pushes or pulls on other magnets.

3.02 Describe and demonstrate how magnetism can be used to generate electricity. 3.03 Design and test an electric circuit as a closed pathway including an energy source, energy conductor, and an energy receiver.

3.04 Explain how magnetism is related to electricity.

Key Questions: (What do you expect your students to know and be able to do):

How can you show and tell how they investigated the pull of magnets on materials made of iron and the pushes or pulls on other magnets?

What are some ways that you can demonstrate how magnetism can be used to generate electricity?

Can you design and test an electrical circuit as a closed pathway including an energy source, energy conductor and an energy receiver?

Can you explain how magnetism is related to electricity?

PROCEDURES: Today is the final day of the unit on magnets. The children have developed PowerPoint, created characters or creations from magnets and stories to go along with their characters. They also have created spreadsheets that have information we will be sharing on the strength of their magnets. We will have the room set up in a way that parents can visit stations of their own children and the stations of other children.

Differentiation: Today is a day of celebration and differentiation has been addressed on the other days. The only differentiation that will be evident today is just the difference in which the children decided to display their experiments on magnets. Assessment: For the PowerPoint, creations, and spreadsheets there have been rubrics to ensure their work is of the quality that would be presentable to display for parents and other visitors. Evaluation throughout the unit has been formative and summative.

Next Steps: We will begin further experiments with electricity.

Reflection: To be done when lesson is actually finished.
