For me, evolutionary
psychology is an excellent way to better understand human behavior. Walking
around ASU’s campus, I see this area of psychology in action. So it’s
fun to read and study this field when you can see its implications everyday.
Along these lines, I think this field has the ability to affect us on a real
day-to-day level. We know there’s racism, murder, and rape in the
world. We also know there are incredible acts of compassion, kindness,
and other positive aspects of humans. I think studying
our evolutionary past and looking at how we evolved can help explain these
types of behavior.

Great reading material on the subject
- A brief synopsis of the book, and maybe a little insight. I selected a few
quotes from each. After the quote, there’s usually a brief write-up of
my thoughts on it. This way, if you read any of them, you’ll possibly
be able to get more out of it. You can also click on the
pictures which are linked to some insightful
summaries at amazon.com. Even though Jared Diamond isn't
ev.psych, the concepts and information are still related- and very
interesting.

thought up, or at least think so ;]

Ev Psych and the Bible -
not mutually exclusive. I made this
website for a school project. It shows how even in the Bible, there
are numerous passages coinciding with Darwinian thought.

A clipped out newspaper article
that
reminds me why this field is salient to myself and society in general.

A hypothetical letter to Dr.
Laura, a radio talk show host. It pokes fun at certain Biblical
passages. I know it isn't exactly related to this field, but the same
people who don't believe in evolution are often the same people who
believe in the infallibility of the Bible.

Following are a few people
in academia
who helped me out. Regardless if I do anything related to this
field later in life, I need to thank some people for their help.
Dr. Lawson for recommending “Guns, Germs and
Steel” and “The Moral Animal.” I can’t think of another two
sources of information/inspiration that
would have been better to suggest!
Dr. Cavanaugh-Toft, for being such an amazing teacher. Every
class I was either on the edge of my chair trying to learn as
much as possible, or about to fall outa my chair from laughter. She knows
how to teach!
Dr. Norm Li and Brian Hofer for being the graduate students willing
to give me a chance as a Research Assistant.
Dr. Kenrick for being interested in evolutionary psychology in the
first place so I can have a prof to talk with and for helping me out on
my hopeful road to graduate school. |
