This is the classroom where I teach X-ray flourescences. In XRF a radioactive sample is used to produce x-rays at a constant rate.  This radioactive material is then placed on top of a detector (in my hand) which is cooled in liquid nitrogen.  When the x-rays hit the metal we are analyzing electons are knocked out of orbit and give off their own distinct x-rays.  These are measured by the detector and send to our computers.  Using a computer program we can determine what metal it is and in what percentages.
