This is the machine we use for XRD.  That stands for x-ray diffraction.  This machines makes x-rays, which we use to "shoot" at a metal sample.  The sample allows most x-rays to pass through but some are reflected.  Those that are reflected are caught on a circular film.  When we develop the film in the dark room we get concentric circles.  By measuring these circles and using and equation we can determine the lattice structure of elements.  This is the same procedure that watson and crick used to find the double helix structure of DNA.
