5/9/2006 | Lukey B | To What Extent? Matthew 8:18-22 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead." To what extent will I follow Jesus? Will I only follow him where it is warm, cosy and safe? Or will I follow, too, when he trespasses to the homeless, the outcasts, the poor. The Son of Man, Christ, went places no holy person dared go before - and to death itself. Will my pursuit of Christ be limited by my individualistic need for creature comforts? Or will I no longer follow the patterns of this world and take a stand for Christ - wherever that may take me and despite what the world may say about it? |
