BENDIGO (AP). The Hulkamaniacs have survived a heated and at times spiteful encounter with the Pre Mix King in their latest division 2 encounter on Wednesday night. The win continued a franchise record winning streak, which now stands at 8 games. Forced to play with just 4 players during the match, Pre Mix King were extremely competitive, much moreso than the two teams last outing in round 2, which the Hulkamaniacs won convincingly by 21 points for their first win of the 2004/05 season. The Hulkamaniacs got away to a solid start, led by Beau who scored his teams first 5 points, on a 3-point field goal and a pair of free throws. Early indications were that a comfortable victory may have been the story of the night, yet the story of the night would eventually be anything but bed-time reading material. The Pre Mix King made a burst of their own soon after, drawing back level and surprising the Hulkamaniacs by taking the lead. A 3-point field goal by Luke kept matters even, but the absence of Adam and Jayson was strongly felt as Pre Mix King began to dominate in the key, which helped them establish a healthy lead heading towards half-time. Murray and Ross also got on the scoresheet just before the half - but in what was an un-characteristic half of basketball for the Hulkamaniacs, they trailed by 4 points after the first 20 minutes. In fact, it is just the second time the Hulkamaniacs have trailed at half-time this season. A late start to the game by Pre Mix King gave the Hulkamaniacs some free points at the start of the second half, leaving the scores tied with a tense final half still to be played. The decision by the Hulkamaniacs to switch to man-on-man defense at the start of the second half was ultimately a game turning point. In no time, Pre Mix King became frustrated. Very frustrated. The pressure cooker that was court 7, had become a boiling pot ready to explode - a fact that wasn't helped by some ordinary, if not lazy, officiating throughout the match. The tight defensive tactics almost brought one Pre Mix King player to the edge, as his constant shoving and regular cheap shots went unsighted by the referees throughout the half. Beau was continuing his solid night offensively, whilst Phil C got his first points on the board early in the second half - and his regular pushing of the ball up-court on fast breaks was surely having an affect on his under-manned opponents. Pre Mix King were still staying with the Hulkamaniacs, even up to midway through the second half. A second 3-point field goal from Luke kept the scores on level pegging, before another basket each to Phil C and Murray finally gave the Hulkamaniacs a lead. With just a couple of minutes on the clock, Phil S added a timely basket, followed by another from Murray, keeping the Hulkamaniacs out in front. Very late in the contest, the usually unflappable Phil C was forced from the game after an ugly incident under the basket provoked by a Pre Mix King player, an incident again missed by the referees. With a small lead, and the pressure still very much alive late in the game, Ross nailed a crucial 3-point shot in the final minute, which was enough for the Hulkamaniacs to hang on for an intense, season-defining victory. The final score was 35-28. Leading scorers for the Hulkamaniacs were Beau with 8, Murray 7, Luke 6, Phil C and Ross 4 and Phil S 2. The Hulkamaniacs remain on top of the Division 2 Men standings, with 8 wins and 1 loss. Next week, the Hulkamaniacs face the Dwarfz, who are in fourth position with 5 wins and 4 losses. MVP Standings: Phil C (44), Beau (35), Murray (25), Luke (24), Ross (21), Jayson (20), Adam (14), Phil S (9). - Luke Last weeks Hulkamaniacs Poll results: Q: Can anyone prevent Phil C from taking home a third consecutive MVP trophy? A: Hell no (2 votes), Yes, Beau (1 vote). | ||
