Franchise record 7th consecutive win sees off Throwbacks challenge.

BENDIGO (AP).

The Hulkamaniacs have achieved a franchise record 7th consecutive win, and at the same time set up the second half of their 2004/05 season with a comfortable 12 point win over the Throwbacks on Wednesday night.

Coming into the match (their first for 2005), the Hulkamaniacs were riding the back of a franchise record equalling 6 game winning streak.  However, the Throwbacks had been the only team to defeat the Hulkamaniacs prior to the Christmas and New Year break, meaning the match was not going to be one for the team to take lightly.

Not surprisingly, it was two-time Hulkamaniacs MVP Phil C who got things underway, draining a 3 point field goal, and following it up with another basket soon after, for a  quick 5-0 lead.

Continuing the early offensive run, Murray converted on a 3-point play to extend the lead to 8, before the Throwbacks had registered a point on the scoreboard.

The early offensive outburst eventually stung the Throwbacks into action, as the started hitting some shots, albeit under some typically immense defensive pressure.

Ross made an immediate offensive impact upon his entrance to the game, getting fouled driving to the hoop and making the field goal.  He followed this with a 3-point bomb soon after, more than paying back the faith the Hulkamaniacs franchise had in him when they signed him to a permenant contract over the mid-season break.

With the Throwbacks still hanging in, Phil C and Beau added a field goal each - before 5 points from a lay-up and a 3-point field goal from Luke closed out a solid first half for the Hulkamaniacs, leading 24-14.

After outplaying their opponents in the first half, the Hulkamaniacs were wary of a second half fade-out, especially coming off a 10-week lay-off.  However they started the second half strongly with Murray and Beau adding field goals, taking the lead to 14 within the first 5 minutes.

But the Throwbacks weren't willing to go down without a fight, showing the type of tenacity they displayed in their first 4 games this season, where they were undefeated.

After trading baskets with the Hulkamaniacs, capped off with a 3-point bomb (off the backboard that controversially wasn't called), the challenge was being laid down - as the lead was cut down to just 8 points with plenty of time remaining.

The resistance offered from the Throwbacks, however, was short lived - as Murray and Phil C added field goals - continuing their impressive outings.  For the Hulkamaniacs, it was a night where teamwork and defensive pressure were as important as any individual contribution.

Phil S put the icing on the cake, with a perfect jump shot from the baseline, and having weathered the second half storm, the Hulkamaniacs saw out the contest to finish with a comfortable winning margin of 12 points.

The final score was 40-28.

The win was even more impressive, considering the asbence of two key players, Adam and Jayson.

Leading scorers for the Hulkamaniacs were Phil C with 13, Murray and Luke with 7 apiece, Beau 6, Ross 5 and Phil S 2 points.

Tonight's win leaves the Hulkamaniacs sitting atop the Division 2 ladder, with 7 wins from their 8 matches so far this season. Next week the Hulkamaniacs (7-1) match up against Pre Mix King (5-3) at 6:50pm on court 5.

MVP Standings: Phil C (42), Beau (32), Murray (22), Jayson (20), Luke (20), Ross (18), Adam (14), Phil S (6).
