BENDIGO (AP). The
Hulkamaniacs have played one of their better games in recent memory,
making it two wins from three outings for the season thus far -
following a comfortable 27-point win over the Dwarfz on Wednesday. The size of the victory was even better considering the continued absence of 2002/03 and 2003 Hulkamaniacs MVP Adam, who is due to return to the team next week. After a competitive opening to the contest, the characteristic tough defense of the Hulkamaniacs was applied in full force, squeezing the life out of their opponents as the first half progressed. The Dwarfz were finding it difficult to break the shackles, as they found themselves under immense pressure on almost every possession. Murray was the early catalyst for the Hulkamaniacs, hitting their first two buckets before a 3-point shot and subsequent fast break lay-up from Luke extended the early break. As the Dwarfz struggled, it was the opposite situation at the other end of the court, with the Hulkamaniacs players seemingly lining up to get into the thick of the action. Phil C put his own stamp on the game soon after, with his first 3-point field goal of the night. As the first half drew to a close, Phil S, Ross and Jayson continued to add to the even spread of scoring throughout the half for the Hulkamaniacs - and after 20 minutes the Hulkamaniacs held a lead of 22-11, and clearly had the better of the game to that point. The intensity applied by the Hulkamaniacs did not let up at the start of the second half, in fact if anything it was turned up a couple more notches - with steals, forced shots and clumsy play on behalf of the Dwarfz - clearly the result of the Hulkamaniacs defensive pressure, which was the highlight of the nights play. Throughout the second half, the spread of scoring was once again shared very evenly for the Hulkamaniacs, with Phil C and Jayson on their way to another 10+ point game, with great support from Murray and Luke who were having impressive games on the offensive end. But defense would be the talking point tonight, as the Hulkamaniacs continued to strangle the life out of the Dwarfz - and the contest. The game was decided well before the final whistle - and fittingly a 3-point bomb from Ross in the final minutes put the icing on a terrific match for the Hulkamaniacs in almost every aspect. The final score was 51-24. Leading scorers for the Hulkamaniacs were Phil C with 12, Jayson and Luke 10 apiece, Murray 9, Ross 7 and Phil S 3. The Hulkamaniacs will be faced with an embarrassment of riches when Adam becomes active following his 8 week suspension. Ross, averaging more than 6 points per game in his 3 matches so far, has flourished in the Hulkamaniacs up-tempo offense and defensively minded style of play - whilst Reece awaits on the sidelines, and from all accounts is eager to make his own mark for the Hulkamaniacs in season 2004/05. Next week the Hulkamaniacs face traditional foe's the Wolverines, at 7:40pm on court 6.

Game notes Phil C has reached a very significant milestone, but becoming the new Hulkamaniacs all-time leading scorer, overtaking Adam who is currently under suspension… Phil C now has 588 points, 6 more than Adam and incredibly has played 19 fewer games… Phil C would now have his sights set on the magical 600-point barrier, a mark no Hulkamaniacs players before him has been able to reach… Jayson played his 20th all-time game for the Hulkamaniacs tonight… Adam will be able to return to the Hulkamaniacs line-up following grading (3rd Novemver), having served an 8 week suspension… Phil S's 3 points is his personal best on the offensive end since hitting 4 points against the Vikings in the 2003 Winter season… The Hulkamaniacs next match (versus the Wolverines) is the last round of 4 weeks of grading for this season… The season proper will then commence, with points reverting back to zero for all teams if there are changes to the division… See the Records and Player Stats sections for more. | ||
