January Stories
First Trimester
Tuesday, Jan. 18th, 2005
The last couple of days have been interesting. I had been feeling sick and yucky since Jan. 8th and I was taking medicine but once we found out we were pregnant and understood thats why I wasnt feeling so good, I stopped taking medicine. Today I called the doctor and it was confirmed that we were pregnant. I set up my first nurse and doctor appointments and Karl and I agreed that we should tell his family and our friends.
First up was Karls mother. She handled the news fine and Karl talked to her for a while. Then it was Grandma Wegelt and the aunts on Karls mother side. They were ecstatic to hear the news. Then I called my best friend and told her the news, and Karl called his best friend who just had a baby in Dec. what a long night!!!! So we stopped making calls to continue the next day.
Thursday, Jan. 20th
I spent last night calling more friends to tell them the news. Of course had to talk for hours so got real tired fast with all the conversations (yes I got tired!!!)
Today I announced it to the Residence Life staff here at UD. I first told my supervisors (Kathleen and Tweedy) in the morning so they were prepped. Then we had an ORL luncheon in honor of Michele Kane who had her baby in Oct. (Shes one of the Asst. Directors). Baby Jack was there and was very cute. I kept on thinking Wow!!! In 9 months well have one of those. How am I going to do? Can I do this? It came to make the announcement and everyone was exicted! As we were leaving, we found out that another CC (Missy Dugan) was also pregnant but she was planning to tell everyone in a month. Ooopppss didnt mean to bring other people news out. What is in the water? Everyones having babies.

Monday, Jan. 24
After weekend of feeling yucky. Other than feeling like I have the stomach flu I dont have any other reactions. Though on Sunday night when Karl gave me dinner I went to the bathroom and felt like throwing up but didnt. Today I feel great!!!! Lots of energy and happy. But my night fall I just was to relax in front of the TV. Luckily this past weekend there was a huge snow storm and there wasnt really much we could do other than watch the football playoffs (go Patriots!).
Tuesday, Jan. 25th
I am still getting some spotting and weird vaginal releases and was explaining it to Michele Kane who encouraged me to contact the All about Women nurse to explain what was happening. The nurse said that she wanted to do some blood work and sent me off to get that done to check out my hormone level and something else. This kinda is making me nervous but I wont freak out. It can be anything. Ill find out tomorrow about the results of the test. If its not normal, well have to do a vaginal ultrasound to see how the baby is doing. One day at a time we will take.

Friday, Jan. 29th
On Wednesday I got the results from the blood test which was high so they wanted me to do an trans-vaginal ultrasound. I got it scheduled for today (Friday).
On Wednesday night, the Kaliher family side found out about the baby. We were keeping a secret until we come for a visit in Feb. to Henry, IL. Thought it would be a great surprise to everyone to make an announcement there and see peoples reactions. Due to an email schofoo I did, one of the aunts (Aunt Cindy) found out so we had to call the grandmas and explained why we hadnt told them. They were still so excited! Im kinda upset since I wanted to see their facial expression since most of the people we had to tell was over the phone so we didnt get to participate in the emotional responses that our families had. Still, everyone is very happy and ecstatic.

On Thursday night, I went out salsa dancing with Karl, my sister Sandra, and my friend Samanta to the Red Room in order of my birthday which is Sunday. The club had no heat so we ended up in Kahluaville, playing some games, and dancing until 11pm. Boy!! We cant stay out too late too tired! I had some spotting so I got a bit nervous. Hopefully the ultrasound will be fine

Today was the trans-vaginal ultrasound. This was very interesting experience. First you need to drink A LOT of water to fill up your bladder so they can see the baby doing the abdominal ultrasound. Since we are early in our pregnancy, we also did the trans-vaginal ultrasound. Okay. Now thats interesting experience. This might get too detailed for some of you but you know I dont hide anything. For the trans-vaginal ultrasound, the technologist puts a long (about a foot) plastic tube with a round head on top that is the camera. In it goes through the vagina cannel and up to visit where the baby is hiding. Okay. Ooo so much fun!! Just relax its like a pap exam. Right!!! Like I can relax during that either. Actually it wasnt so bad just uncomfortable. After all that, they turn the monitor to us (Karl and I .and yes Karl survived the whole experience). And there the Luka baby was heart pumping away. And it looks like a..hmmma ..hmm. well its going to be a baby so thats all it matters. They dated the baby to 8 weeks and 5 days and our due date is Sept. 4th, right in time for opening weekend here at the university. We then got to talk with the radiologist who told us that the baby is doing good, developing in its sac and looking good. No problem! Except that the homeroom (thats me) should be taking it easy with exercising. (ugh!!!). We are very excited that the baby is developing fine and theres nothing wrong with me (other than my stubbornness to not slow down). I guess I will have no option  - its about time someone boss me around and tells me what I cant do.
Week of Jan. 31st
The 9th week Im starting to feel better, having more energy. Im still hungry a lot, but very picky. Like now I cant look at chicken without feeling yucky, but would love to have meat and fried eggs.  I started itching a lot which is a sign that my skin is getting ready to grow. I also turned 32 years old this week. Karl took me to Medieval times, and we had a wonderful time together. Overall a very good week
