of Massa di Maratea, Italy

and related families

Welcome to this web page. I hope the following information will help us find out whether we are related. If you can find the name of any of your ancestors in this page, we are probably family. I’d appreciate any corrections or additions to the family tree. Please send them to

Source of the information:

The following information was taken from the civil registrars from the Circondario di Lagonegro, comune di Maratea for 1867-1910. The registrars were microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints for their public access. I’d like to express my gratitude to them for their assistance and work in this field.

System used for the classification:

Each page represents a different family. My grandparents’ surnames are Schettini (grandfather) and Mazzeo (grandmother). Therefore, the information related to these families is the most extensive. However, other surnames such as Conte, Di Mingo, Migliolo, Fiorillo, Mandesa, Chiapetta, Faraco and Oliva are also represented in the earlier generations.

Each individual has a unique classification consisting of a letter (specific to the surname) and a series of numbers separated by periods. The earlier ancestor of each family takes the form X1 and his wife becomes X1s (for spouse). Their children are given the classifications X1.1, X1.2, etc. For example, my great grandfather, Macario Schettini Mazzeo has the following classification:

M1.2.1.4

that is, a person in the Mazzeo (M) family tree from the fourth generation: the fourth son of the first son (or daughter) of the second son (or daughter) of the earliest ancestor.

A note regarding the use of surnames: In order to make it easier to identify of specific individuals in the family tree, I have included the maternal surname following the paternal surname.

The family trees.

Mazzeo      This is the longest tree. It contains the Mazzeo ancestors and the joining of the Schettini and Mazzeo families.

Schettini     The paternal family tree that joins the Mazzeo tree after the third generation.

Schettino    families related to the above.

Other related families This page contains small family trees of a few descendants (mainly women) who have married into the Schettini-Mazzeo families.

Other non-related families This page contains more than fifty families who were living in the same area at the same time as my ancestors. Their relationship to my family (if any) is not yet apparent to me, but this information may be helpful to you.
