Be sure to get your trades in before then! You've only got TWO weeks to work out any deals. ************************************************************************** WEEK NINE/TEN/ELEVEN REVIEW There was a fleury of trade and player movement in the extended holiday block. There were some big moves in both leagues. The biggest in each were Joe Thornton and Robert Lang trading places in the World League as Captain Joe moves from South Shore to Ottawa. In the North American League, Fedorov, Kiprusoff and Salei travel south to Kansas City. In exchange for the defensive help, Calgary gets dependable Martin Brodeur Petr Nedved and Nick Boynton. Kansas City may start block six out of the playoffs, but with the volume of trades and the addition of Kirpusoff, Fedorov, Hedjuk, Konowalchuk and Zhitnik, a quick turn-around is more than possible. With all of the trades being made prior to the trade deadline block, will there be as much player movement in the next two weeks? Speaking about movement, the NAL East saw some other kinds of motion as first place Lexington drops from first to fourth, while Kent Kounty under new owner- ship leaps from sixth to first after some player management errors by the Inside Shots (see FREE AGENT ISSUE below). The NAL West is much more stable. Seattle still maintains their strangle hold over the conference, but the team struggled, dropping four games during block five. Second place Red Deer took partial advantage by being the winning team in two of those games. The rest of the West seems content to remain where they are, although Iowa did pull the strings on what could be one of the trades of the year when they unloaded Hedjuk for a serious upgrade in defense for their forwards (Cole and Primeau). There was some position friction in the World League. The Lions attempt to establish themselves as the king of the East as they edge Aberdeen in the tie-breaker for first place. Before the new year, Peoria was the leader, but finds themselves in third, two points shy of a three-way tie. The fighting Falcons of Floral Park slip outside the playoffs into sixth place after going winless on the road. But the last playoff spot is still very much up for grabs as only seven points separates fourth place Sufferin from last place Omaha. Things are firming up in the WL West. The bottom feeding teams of Kodiak, Saginaw and Albany may fight one another for draft pick lottery tickets. Hibbing will look to solidify their position as they begin to pull away from the non-playoff teams. The South Shore Snipers were on fire during block five. They won five road games to vault them into third. Given the choice, the good bet to lay down is on the team with the better road record. The Snipers hold the best road record in the WL West. Like in the NAL West, Ibiza seems a lock to win first place, just as Ilya Kovalchuk seems poised to take home the Bobby Hull Trophy for being the league's highest goal scorer and the Gretzky Trophy for leading the league in total points. ************************************************************************** SPECIAL THANKS to all who submitted All-Star nominations and newsletter articles! I wish all of you the best of luck in the last block of trading. ************************************************************************** BRANDON WHEAT KINGS PRESS RELEASE by Greg Lees The following has just been released from the office of the Brandon Wheat Kings: The Wheat kings have traded the teams leading scorer and top defensive player to the West Coast Express. In announcing the ten player deal with West Coast GM Greg Lees emphatically denies he has given up hope on the current season and has cast his glance to the future. "This trade and the deal with Labrador has changed the face of the team to be sure, but they are talented and we are a younger team for the moves. I believe we can compete for a playoff spot and who knows what happens when you get there?" When asked about trading with a team competing for the same playoff spot Lees replied: "I think both teams can get into the post season and this trade should help us both." ------------------------------------- The deal as reported: BWK - TRADES Mike Comrie, Martin Lapointe, Kirk Maltby, Glen Murray and Cliff Ronning to West Coast for Tony Amonte, Dan Hamhuis, Ethan Moreau, Aleksy Morozov, and Daniel Sedin. WCE - TRADES Tony Amonte, Dan Hamhuis, Ethan Moreau, Aleksy Morozov, and Daniel Sedin to Brandon for Mike Comrie, Martin Lapointe, Kirk Maltby, Glen Murray and Cliff Ronning. ************************************************************************** REFLECTIONS FROM ALBANY by Paul King After staying quiet on the transaction wire for the first part of the season the River Rats in one night traded away four of their starters. The first two go were LeClair and Hull who were traded off to South Shore for young players Joffrey Lupul, Marty Reasoner, Eric Staal, SSS05#1 and SSS05#3. Minutes later Owner/GM/Coach Paul King was again at the podium to announce the taking of Zhitnek and Hill over to Monarch for Salei, McGillis and their first rounder. "We appreciate the job these four have done for our team this year, but we need to take some chances and get some young players in here and see what they can do. It's not like we were going anywhere with these players this year. Our fans probably will think we have lost our minds but the truly knowledgeable one's will understand what we're trying here." The one thing the Rats got that will probably come in real handy are two additional #1's for the next draft. The Rats will also be dipping into the Free Agent pool to get one more warm body on their roster. There were also inquiries from teams about Ryder, Gionta, and Nabokov but the Rats quickly informed the teams asking about them that they weren't for sale. So, while it will probably be a long season or two for the Rats they feel that they will turn the corner and grow as a team. ************************************************************************** ALL-STAR BALLOTS! Soon each league will get a ballot in their mailboxes. What you'll need to do is cast your vote(s). The list of players will be by position and conference. They'll include the WSHL stats so you get a better idea on who's hot and who's not. INS 3 2 The Shots continue to bolster their team thru deals and are poised to challenge Seattle for leagues best. LEX 2 3 Team defence and goaltending continue to lead Lexington. KKK 6 4 Kent Kounty are playing very well of late, as this well balanced team gains some speed. KCO 5 5 Kansas obtained some big talent in recent deals look for them to also make a run down the stretch. RDA 4 6 Red Deer is staying in the hunt but needs more depth to compete with above teams. WEL 9 7 Wellington continues to play well despite goaltending riffs. LAB 8 8 Labrador remains in hunt for playoff spot but is appears to be building for future. WCE 10 9 West Coast also made some moves recently in hopes of making a push towards the plaayoffs. BWK 12 10 Brandon needs to get a more balanced scoring attack to move up. NHH 11 11 Newark's stars continue to struggle. CAL 7 12 Calgary now appears to be in re-building mode. KIT 13 13 New manager found, can they improve? IOW 14 14 Rebuilding mode. ************************************************************************** 2004-2005 WL Rankings (week 6) by Dan Irvine Bk 5 Bk 6 Team Rank Rank Comments MON 2 1 Lions have made some moves to improve their team and had an outstanding block to takeover the #1 ranking. AFS 1 2 The Scotsmen also made some additional moves in hopes of staying at the top. IBI 4 3 Kovalchuk and strong goaltending continue as Ibiza remains the surprise team in the WL. PEO 3 4 Peoria continue to be a very competitive team led by young Richards and Kiprusoff. SSS 6 5 South Shore had another good block and with their recent deals look to be a top contender as expected. SAS 5 6 Saskatoon continue to get timely scoring and are playing well. OTT 9 7 Ottawa made some bold deals in hopes of turning their season around, look for them to rebound and be a force down the stretch HSB 7 8 Hibbing is playing well of late and remain in the playoff hunt. FPF 10 9 St. Louis and Roloson continue to carry them as they remain on the playoff bubble. KOD 8 10 Kodiak is stil in search of some consistency. SUF 11 11 Sufferin remains in playoff contention. SAG 12 12 This young team just got younger and appear to be a force for years to come. OMA 13 13 Goal scoring remains an inigma for this team. ARR 14 14 Continued in their rebuilding mode. ************************************************************************** NEW YEAR WISHES FROM THE KING FAMILY by Paul King Happy New Year everyone. My wife and I travelled up to Montreal yesterday (Dec 31) and parked next to the Bell Center and it was very depressing to know that no games were being played. Last season we made it to our first Canadians game and it was a blast, this year I was hoping to catch them again against either my beloved Rangers or the Maple Leafs but it won't be happening unfortunately. ************************************************************************** I DON'T MISS HOCKEY by Kevin Webber I don't have to miss hockey, The game is all around me. I play every weekend in my league, so there's my fix right there. Matt Cooke in a non-talented beer league sort of way. That's me. The internet brings me the Manitoba Moose and Canada got its first ever ECHL team in Victoria. Yeah, its 3 1/2 hours away but its still good hockey. What I do miss is the Canucks. I miss Edi Jovanovski and the way he leads with his hear on his sleeve. Pound-for-pound, Jovo is the toughest in the league, just ask Adam Deamarsh. I miss the way Bert scowls and always complains after an offside call. Man, that guy can play! The most dominant player in the league today save maybe Joe Thornton. Markus Naslund. Need I say more? He is so classy and honest. Such a breath of fresh air from the days of Mark Messier when everything was so political. I miss Trevor Linden when he was a player and not a union guy. I want to know if Jason King can stick this year. I want Jarkko Ruutuu to beat someone up and have it be a total suprise the way it always is. I miss Brendan Morrison is THE most underrated centre in the league. Yeah sure he plays with Naslund and Bertuzzi, but he kills penalties to. I know there's probably a serious hate on for the Canucks in various parts of the country and in the states, especially for my man Bert, but this is just something that I had to get off of my chest. Bring on the World Junior Championships. I hope the (whatever)Dakota puts on a first class tourney, because hockey deserves it. Lets hope Canada wins and can defend in Vancouver next year when I'll be in attendance. When Jason gets back on-line, he may have to join these four MSN users. ************************************************************************** OUTLAWS OUTTA HERE by Doug North Kansas City - GM Doug North announced a series of trades today before the trade deadline to try and help salvage a so far disappointing season. Wave goodbye to stand out players such as Martin Brodeur, Marian Gaborik and Nick Boynton. Say hello to Milan Hedjuk, Miikka Kipprusoff and Alexei Zhitnik. North made three seperate trades to try and wakeup this .500 team. It all started when Iowa was shopping Milan Hedjuk. The Outlaws wasted no time in acquiring the talented RW giving up Keith Primeau and youngster Eric Cole. "We gave up some gritty guys but guys like Hedjuk don't exactly grow on trees," said North about the former 50 goal scorer. "For some reason we've had trouble scoring and we're hoping Milan can help solve that problem." Scoring goals has not been the only glaring problem in KC as goalie Martin Brodeur has been a major disappointment. His 3.30 GAA and .894 save % is not exactly what the team had in mind and is a major reason for the team's demise so far this season. He was shipped along with Petr Nedved and Nick Boynton to Calgary for Ruslan Salei, Sergei Federov and Miikka Kipprusoff. Kipper is expected to split time with Mathieu Garon to give the Outlaws a new look in goal. "I can't explain Martin's performance this season...... I don't think anyone can," said North. "Hopefully a change of scenery will do him good as the fans were really getting on him here at home. If we can keep Sergei away from the teenage Russian community here in KC he should help us." The final deal was made with Labrador as Marian Gaborik and Martin Erat was shipped out for Alexei Zhitnik and Steve Konowalchuk. "We lost some grit and defensive play when we lost Primeau and Cole," explained GM North. "We felt that we acquired some good talent in Federov and Hedjuk so we could afford to trade a guy like Gaborik to get us some help for this year. As you can tell this front office has not given up on this season just yet." Time will tell if the moves will help but the players seemed to appreciate the fact that the front office is trying to do what it takes. "Marty was struggling no doubt about it," said team captain and leading scorer Patrick Marleau. "We were sad to see Marty and the others leave but I am glad to see the talent coming in to play.....I can't wait to play with Federov and Hedjuk and Kipper is one of the best in goal." ************************************************************************** INSIDE SHOTS FREE AGENT ISSUE Hello All, The NAL Committee has decided on the following penalty for using Gelinas and Mitchell one block too early. These players had some impact in some of the games, but were free agents and marginal players at best. This being the case it has been decided that Inside Shots will lose 50% of the points gained with those players in the lineup since there is no way of telling how much impact they would have had in a game positive or negative. Thus Inside Shots loses 8 points and both players go back into free agent pool.
