You have three-weeks to play an extended block of games. Games for this block run from 12/20/04 until 1/09/05. With three-weeks the league wishes you a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! The trade deadline for any and all trade, including free agent acquisition is the end of Block 6, which will be played after the new year. Be sure to get your trades in before then! You've only got FIVE weeks to work out any deals. ************************************************************************** WEEK SEVEN/EIGHT REVIEW Two words describe this block, "Player Movement." Could the two deals made by the Inside Shots be the spark that causes a rush on trades for the next two blocks? The trade deadline is the end of block six, roughly five weeks away. Of their remaining All-Star players, the Shots haven't dealt Daniel Alfredsson, Zdeno Chara and Markus Naslund, but reports suggest that any of their three remaining players could be had for the right deal. While the Inside Shots were working out deals, many teams were busy looting the free agent talent pool. For the most part teams were looking for defense. Not just defensemen, but defensive and intimidating forwards to help in the second half of the season. Strangely the World League has been relatively silent during this player movement period. But then there were two large deals between four teams in the prior block of games. With the deals being made, there wasn't a whole lot of movement in the standings with one exception, the South Shore Snipers in the World League have gone from out of the playoff picture and into fourth place. They may only hold a two point lead over Kodiak and Saginaw, but they also trail Hibbing by the same margin. The pressure may be on the Badgers' new goaltender, Ed Belfour. If he slips, Hibbing may wind up on the out- side of the playoff bubble. ************************************************************************** FREE AGENTS, FREE AGENTS, FREE AGENTS! By Scott Shigemi In the past few weeks, there have been raids on the free agent pool by several teams. Earlier there were concerns about the lack of trading players between teams. Could it possibly be that the use of these free agents is too tempting and easier for managers to use than working out a deal with another team? Considering the NHL lock-out and owner turnover this year, it probably is. How could the league fix it so teams will make trades instead of going to the free agent pool first? On top of the player hold-over rule (currently signed free agents cannot be protected at the end of the season), teams signing a free agent would be required to play the player in their team's next block of games. This would require players to have a minimum of eight unused games remaining on their card. And by play, it would require that the player have a regular shift each period. Goaltenders have the same rules, but they would be required to start in a number of games up to their fatigue rating for the initial block. They still require eight remaining games played in order to be signed, but it will eliminate those anomaly goaltenders, 1-4 GP, 97+% save percentages. Honestly, I was thinking about using up the high save percentage goalies in the free agent pool. Each block I could select one of the 1-10 games played goalies with a high save percentage (93+%). After using them, I'd drop them for another goaltender. None of these goaltenders could be held over the following year and none of them would be able to play in the post-season, but if they help win games they're serving their purpose. Now would such a thing be within the spirit of the league? Probably not since it takes advantage of some loopholes, which could be closed if the league adopts the idea/rules I suggest in this article. Look for the proposal for next season. ************************************************************************** ALL-STAR NOMINATIONS! Yes, it's that time of year. Each manager has the chance to nominate players from their team for this year's All-Star ballot. Send to me or to the list your nominees for each position, Left Wing, Right Wing, Centre, two Defensemen (right or left, makes no difference), and one goaltender. Once every team has submitted their team's nominees, a list of players along with stats will be sent out for you to vote on. While this isn't mandatory, if you do not wish to participate, please indicate your choice not to participate. This way I won't wait up for your nominees or your ballot when the voting is being totaled. Nomination Example: Seattle Tsunami - NAL LW - Keith Tkachuk C - Steve Rucchin RW - Marian Hossa D - Brian Leetch D - Mike Van Ryn G - Roberto Luongo ************************************************************************** GAMES PLAYED AND GOALTENDER FATIGUE REVISTED In a sort of homage to the Matrix box set that was recently released (I still only enjoyed the first), here are a few reminders on how the WSHL works with regards to games played for players. Skaters, forwards and defensemen can play a number of games equal to their NHL games played with one exception, those with 70 or more games played may play in all 82 scheduled games. These players basically have no maximum for usage. All goaltenders are limited to playing their NHL games played. They have an additional restraint for consecutive starts. They may not start in more consecutive games than their fatigue rating. Players who were labeled as Right of Retention are subject to post-season release if they play in any number of games. These players may not play in any games if the team wishes to keep the player in the following season, 2005-06. ************************************************************************** PLAYOFFS AND PLAYER ELIGIBLITY Another reminder article so that there is no confusion later on. When the playoffs begin, goaltenders are eligible only if they start in a minimum of ten games. For each series, players with 60 or more NHL games played may play in all seven games. Players with fewer than 60 NHL games played my play in a number of games equal to their NHL games played divided by ten, rounding any fraction up. Example: Dany Heatley played in 31 NHL games last season. He is eligible to play in four WSHL playoff games in each series. Goaltenders with a fatigue rating of five or more may play in every game. Those with a fatigue rating lower than five may play a number games equal to their fatigue rating. Example: Mathieu Garon has a fatigue rating of two. He may play in two post-season games each series, but only if he starts in ten regular season games. ************************************************************************** GAME SUMMARY OF THE WEEK - NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE This is a new feature for the Newsletter, the Game Summary of the Week! One for each league to showcase a game reported by you the manager. Here's an excerpt from a block four game played and reported by Mike Kuduk. The additional commentary, while not necessary adds something extra to the box score. And no, I didn't select it because my team was described in the game. From now on, I'll be on the lookout for entertaining box scores. Keep up the good work Mike! -------------------------------------- In a potential Molson Cup final preview, the Lexington Thoroughblades defeated the Orr division leading Seattle Tsunami, 5-4 before a capacity crowd of 22,255 at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. The game started with a quick goal by NAL scoring leader Marian Hossa, but was answered immediately by Jay Pandolfo and Martin Straka - without having to use Roberto Luongo's card. Modin and Straka exchanged goals, and then Straka scored again to chase Luongo at 16:21 of the first period. Ty Conklin came in and was able to hold Lexington scoreless for the rest of the period. Seattle regrouped completely at the intermission and tied the score on two early second period goals, one on the power play with Nicklas Lidstrom in the box. Conklin was strong in the second, and Roloson recovered somewhat from a shaky start, as the teams headed to the second intermission tied at 4. Before the Rupp faithful were back to their seats for the third period, Brian Rolston scored on a beautiful feed from Jere Lehtinen, who played a great two-way game tonight. Up 5-4, Lexington continued to apply the pressure, and with Dallas Drake in the box for holding Ty Conklin took a slashing penalty to give Lexington a 5 on 3 power play for 1:11. Seattle won the faceoff, and skated off the rest of the penalties, yielding no shots on goal. A second Lexington power play sputtered, and with about 6 minutes left in the game, it apperaed than Jay Pandolfo was going to the box for hauling down Hossa. However, Marian took objection to what Jay had to say, and after smacking Pandolfo across the mouth referee Denis Morel sent both to the sin bin. Dallas Drake took another penalty, and after killing off the 4 on 3, Seattle could not really get organized against the Thoroughblades' trap, giving Lexington a hard-fought 5-4 victory. Martin Straka - 2G, +2 (he has 4 goals in 5 games since signing) Here are some random thoughts from Coach Fotiu from the post-game press conference: "Dwayne (Roloson) was not particularly sharp in the first two periods. He stopped Nagy to save the game in the third, though. He is going to have to perform at a higher level if this team is going to go deep into the post-season." "Straks (Martin Straka) is fitting in nicely. We are happy to have him, and we noticed that he has even been brushing up on his forechecking and defensive zone responsibilities." "4 goals on Luongo in one period - I told you we would be ready to play tonight. I was impressed with Ty (Conklin), though. He really bailed them out when it looked like we were going to run them out of the building." "I know the power play was 0-6 tonight, including a 5 on 3 and a 4 on 3 with 1 shot between them. We will be working on that in practice next week." Lexington finishes the bi-week 3-1-1 at home. The Sentinels respond with 3 quick goals. Many high split chances missed by both teams. Saginaw has 4 G16 chances turned aside, but the turning point comes when Scott Gomez gets a breakway the card after Hejduk gives Saginaw the lead..rolls 4 = G 18 and gets a split of 20! I had already slammed a fist on the table but did not hear the cheers and realized Turco had made his first big save since I took over as coach. A very fun game to play.
