Be sure to get your trades in before then! You've only got FIVE weeks to work out any deals. Also, remember that we are using goaltender fatigue this year! This means your goaltenders may not start in more consecutive games than their fatigue rating. ************************************************************************** WEEK FIVE/SIX REVIEW The North American League saw it's first over turned trade. The review board was convened, arguments were heard and what would have been a blockbuster deal for the struggling Inside Shots was negated. More importantly, the review board worked and created some guidelines for trade protests (see below). Even without the deal, the Inside Shots look to be back on track as they begin to climb out of the non-playoff teams to join the possible post- season band. They were a perfect 5-0 at home, averaging 4.2 goals per game and a minuscule 1.2 goals against. Pass the credit to four of the team's Usual Suspects, Jeremy Roenick, Markus Naslund, Zdeno Chara and Ed Belfour. While J.R. and Naslund score goals, Chara and Belfour prevent them. Now if they could translate the same winning attitude to their current road games. Moving up along with the Shots were the Wellington Dukes. Credit goes to their blueline, which appears to be making huge strides forward as possibly challenging the Lextington Thoroughblades as the North American League's best. They are led by Bryan McCabe, who earned this year's first player of the week award by a defenseman. In the Western Conference, the Seattle Tsunami stumbled at home, but the second place Red Deer Avros couldn't take advantage of the loss and ties. Red Deer's goaltenders may also suffer post-season suspensions for exceeding their fatigue ratings. The only real change in the West was the switch between West Coast and Brandon. Both teams seem to be entrenched in 4th and 5th place. Their record, goals for and goals against are all nearly identical, which begs the question, who will make a move to develop the edge to take sole possession of the final playoff spot. But there's also hope, Red Deer and Calgary are both only three points ahead of both teams. Looking at the World League, it's no surprise that the second year expansion teams are still dwelling in the cellars. Omaha and Albany are both in last place, but for the Knights there is hope as fourth place is just a win away. The Floral Park Falcons who were in last place at the end of block two have played a great block three and are in 4th place! Just two points separates 4th through 7th in Howe Division, so anything is still possible. While flying high in Aberdeen, those Flying Scotsmen have begun to sink. In order to correct the problem, they've pulled off a remarkable trade with the Hibbing Stink Badgers. The two key players in the deal seem to be goaltenders Ed Belfour and Roberto Luongo. It seems that the Eagle has landed, not at the Kennedy Air Force Base, but in Hibbing. Phnom Roberto Luongo will put on the kilt as he joins the Scotsmen. With more than half the season still to play, it'll be interesting to examine this deal and see if the two teams can regain their conference leads after falling to third place. ************************************************************************** TRADE PROTEST RULES The Committee has decided on the Trade Protest Protocol use to protest trades (if necessary). See Below. 1. Trade protests must be made within 48 hours of the trade posting. 2. Players involved in trade cannot be subsequently traded within 48hrs. 3. The protest should be filed with the Review Board, Commissioner, and Vice-Commissioner. 4. The manager who protests should give good reasons why the trade is not in the best interest of the league. 5. The managers involved in the trade should explain why they think the trade is acceptable. 6. The protesting manager and trade managers should remain gentlemanly in the course of discussion and must address the Review Board members, Commissioner, and Vice-Commissioner as a group in regards to the protest. 7. The Review Board should discuss the arguments presented in the statements on both sides of the argument. This discussion should remain within the board (and not with individual members of the league). Board members should not allow personal bias to affect their decision. 6. The Review Board should report their findings to the Commissioner (unless the trade dispute involves the Commissioner in which case the findings are reported to the Vice-Commissioner). 7. The Commissioner should make an announcement to the league. 8. The decision of the Review Board should be final. ************************************************************************** NEW OWNER FOR KENT KOUNTY, BUT TIGERS ARE ON THE PROWL Stan Skawinski has stepped up to take over the ailing Kent Kounty Killer Kittens. Anyone know someone willing to take a last place team with a lot of fire-power over? If so, the Kentucky Ice Tigers are ripe for a new manager. ************************************************************************** OMAHA MOVING RIGHT ALONG by Tanya Sigman Omaha sends disgruntled defenseman Jason Smith to Saginaw for defenseman Jiri Fischer. Smith was not happy with having to sit a few games to let the offensive-minded Marc Andre Bergeron take a spin on the ice. ************************************************************************** WORLD LEAGUE BLOCKBUSTER DEAL A shocker for Stink Badger fans - as franchise cornerstone Roberto Luongo is sent packing in an 8 player deal with Aberdeen. The Aberdeen Flying Scotsmen have traded Ed Belfour, Mark Messier, Markus Naslund and Scott Niedermayer to the Hibbing Stink Badgers for Scott Hannan, Trevor Letowski, Roberto Luongo and Patrik Stefan. ************************************************************************** Musings from Wellington In the NAL, my team the Wellington Dukes appear on paper to be a blocky defensive team (Theodore, Denis - goalies). In the WL, my team the Ottawa Axemen appear on paper to be an all offense no defense team (Raycroft -goalie). This being the case, I'm at a loss to explain why the stats for these 2 teams appear almost identical. Wellington 3.8 GF, 3.57 GA. Ottawa 3.5 GF, 3.32 GA. I don't want to bore anyone with all the data so here's the Reader's Digest version as I see it. Just like the NHL (when they're actually playing), it all comes down to one thing and one thing only. Goaltending. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying for a minute that either of these teams is good. They both have their strengths and their weaknesses. However, they do share one common bond. Brutal goaltending. NHL NAL WL Theodore .918 .902 .922 Denis .918 .885 .928 Raycroft .926 .921 .901 As the stats show, these goalies are more than capable of performing at a high level. I know that I'm not the only one having to put up with underachieving goalies. The WL has had a blockbuster deal involving Roberto Luongo and Ed Belfour because their respective managers felt a change was necessary. I suppose only time will tell if this was the paranoid ramblings of a frustrated manager. Shrewd line matching and superb managing of the players by the manager has played a key role in their success. LEX 3 2 Goaltenders continue to shine for this team who have become a very tough defensive team to play. INS 5 3 The Shots have turned things around, look for this balanced team to compete for top ranking soon. RDA 4 4 Red Deer continues to play well, led by Iginla & Pronger. KCO 1 5 Well the youngsters certainly had a rough block 3 which has led to a big drop in their ranking. Lets see if they can rebound from this. KKK 6 6 KKK now has a manager and with St Louis on the team anything is possible, look for them to make a move in standings. CAL 7 7 Calgary has performed well for new manager and continue to be a competitive team. LAB 9 8 Labrador is now settling in for a long winters battle to make the playoffs. WCE 10 9 West Coast had a better block this time, look for them to make some moves to shake up the roster. NHH 8 10 Again this team is a big question mark, full of under performing talented players, maybe a shakeup is in order. WEL 11 11 A very balanced team that shaky goaltending has let them down so far. BWK 13 12 Brandon needs to get a more balanced scoring attack to move up. IOW 14 13 Iowa will be looking to rebuild for the future. KIT 12 14 Kentucky is looking for a new manager, maybe that would inject some life into stars Lang & Guerin. ************************************************************************** 2004-2005 WL Rankings (week 4) by Dan Irvine Team Bk3 Bk4 Comments AFS 1 1 Made a big deal to address their goaltending needs in getting Luongo, will have to wait and see if that addition offsets the loss of Messier & Naslunds scoring numbers. MON 2 2 Monarch has a very balanced scoring attack and are still ranking as one of the top teams. PEO 3 3 Led by Richards and Kiprusoff Peoria continues to be a tough competitor. IBI 5 4 The Cinderella team of the WL continues to shine led by excellent goaltending and timely scoring. SAS 4 5 Their new manager has them playing well, G Murray continues to lead team in scoring. SUF 9 6 Sufferin continues to play well and seems to be in all games. KOD 7 7 Kodiak is still looking for consistency, look for possible deals to be made with another average block. FPF 10 8 St Louis and Roloson continue to carry them, if they can get a more balanced attack they will be real tough. OTT 6 9 Lang leads this team but defense and poor goaltending have hurt them. Look for a possible shakeup if things don't improve. HSB 12 10 Hibbing just dealt for more scoring in getting Naslund & Messier, look for them to improve their game soon. SAG 13 11 The young Saginaw team continues to struggle with consistency. New manager may turn things around. OMA 11 12 Omaha continues to struggle to find goals. SSS 8 13 A team with an abundance of talent on paper but poor defensive play and poor goaltending have let them down. Is a shakeup coming? ARR 14 14 Albany will be looking to rebuild for the future. ************************************************************************** LOCK-OUT IDEAS REVISTED Just recapping all the ideas for what to do when the NHL cancels the season or plays a shortened one. These ideas were submitted in previous newsletters. 1) Suspend the league until the NHL resumes. This should be the last option. 2) Use Draft-o-matic with a previous season and run it as a single WSHL season. 3) Use a previous NHL season, everybody selects a team and then we draft from the unused teams, adding 3-5 additional players. The team that can increase their NHL points the most is the real winner. 4) As #3, but drafting is weighted to give the losing NHL teams more picks in the earlier rounds. For instance, a non-playoff team drafts in the first and second rounds while the playoff teams sit back and watch. 5) Draft from a previous season for 5-6 rounds and then use draft-o-matic to finish off the teams. 6) If the NHL plays a shortened season, we might end up doing the same, or possibly doubling the games played for the players, or adding X number of games to every player if we want a full season. 7) International league with players divided into teams based on their nationality (Canada, U.S., Russia, Finland, Germany, etc.) It's possible to sub-divide some nations like Canada into smaller regions. 8) Play using the original 1978-1979 Strat-o-matic season. With just 17 teams, it's almost possible to run two leagues, or just one league if there isn't enough interest. ************************************************************************** PLAYOFF PICTURE, NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE Is it too early to be thinking playoffs?
