If you didn't know it, the league files are posted at Yahoo Groups. ************************************************************************** WEEK THREE/FOUR REVIEW You want to know who the hottest team in the WSHL is? Much to the dismay of the Commissioner, it isn't the Inside Shots. The two hottest teams both play in the World League and are the Ibiza Corsairs and Peoria Rivermen. The Corsairs continue to set an unbelievable pace, with 32 points out of a possible 40. They're the only team in the WSHL that have yet to lose a home game! Blasting off like a rocket, the Peoria Rivermen are setting the pace in the World League's Howe Division. After starting the bi-week off tied for first, they drop just a single game to take sole possession of first. Stingy defense and an explosive offense are keeping the Rivermen ahead of the hard charging Aberdeen Flying Scotsmen. This isn't to say there are no "hot" teams in the North American League. There are three super contenders in the Sittler Division. They were all tied at the beginning of block two, but Lexington is creeping away with a slight lead over the still surprising Labrador Moose and last year's cellar-dweller, Kansas City Outlaws. In block two the Outlaws hope to steal a few more points to regain the division lead in order to cap off a worst to first scenario. The other team to heat up in the NAL is the Red Deer Avros. Despite learning their coach and manager will be taking some time off during a work related relocation, the Avros overtook the Calgary Grizzlies for second place. But the Seattle Tsunami continue to play well at home and on the road, maintaining their overall lead. ************************************************************************** DUM, DUM, DUM, ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST The latest WSHL casulty is Mike Yancharas. He leaves his two franchises, the Saginaw Sentinals in the World League and the Kent Kounty Killer Kittens in the North American League to be run by new ownership. Of his two teams, the Kent Kounty Killer Kittens or K4 as he abbrivated it, performed better, making the playoffs in their first year. They had the unfortunate luck of facing the WSHL champion, Labrador Moose. If it weren't for bad luck, the Sentinals wouldn't have had any luck at all, tying the Kodiak Attack in their first season, but losing out on the tie- breaker by one win. Taking over the Saginaw Sentinals will be Greg Lees. ************************************************************************** Inside Strato Daily by Mike Webb After a 2-6 home stand, obviously frustrated Inside Shots Manager, Mike Webb, fired long time friend and Coach Lily Grogwhiel, better known for calling snake eye goals on the outside shot as "a little baby grogwhiel goal". "He's the first guy to roll one die at a time, what else can I add to that" said Webb who was obviously struggling with the decission to fire Grogwhiel who was like a son to him. When asked who was going to take over, Webb cut back, " Double finger drop, Webb. Who else would I ask to take over this mess." At that point Webb left the podium muttering " someone is getting traded, I just don't know who" and proceeded to stagger out of the hall. ************************************************************************** WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE NAL? by Jason McCorrister Hi all, Last year was a trade fest. I think I had traded half of my team before the third week! Dan and Mike were constantly in line for a trade. Offers were flying every day. What's going on? Doesn't anybody believe in hitting the panic button early on? Hey, I've only got another week and then I'm off to Colombia and Borneo. The Avros will be on autopilot for almost two months and we need a quick trade fix. Somebody has to trade me a decent center! Let's get on this, alright? ************************************************************************** WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE NAL, PART II by Scott Shigemi In response to Jason McCorrister's question about the lack of player movement in the North American League, trades have taken a big downturn in volume for both leagues. I see the result coming from three areas, the first is the uncertainty of the league continuing with the number of drop-out managers. In two weeks the NAL has lost four managers and making deals with the new ones may take time as they figure out what their team needs. The second area of concern comes from the NHL labor situation. If there is no NHL season for 2004-05, what will the teams do when Strat fails to create new cards for the WSHL's 2005-06 season? Sure teams could trade away all their draft picks and make a run, but who's to say that this manager will stick around for the long-haul? Or who's going to risk a deal for draft picks when there's been talk about merging the WSHL owner- ship into one league? Talk about uncertainty, the WSHL is mirroring the NHL to a certain extent. Finally as the second bi-week comes to a close, we're seeing a dramatic pace being set by a few franchises. At the time that I write this article, Red Deer and Seattle are tied at 25 points with the Avros having two games in hand. Calgary remains in third place with 16 points, playing four fewer games than Red Deer. In fourth place, the West Coast Express are sitting with just 12 points. Over in the East, the race might be a little tighter, Labrador in first with 25 points, but needing three more games to be reported to Kent Kounty's 22 points in a completed block two. Trailing the top two teams are Kansas City at 20 points and Lexington with 18, but the Thoroughblades have only played four out of their ten games. The cream of the crop seem to have most of their holes already filled. A trade or two may actually hurt them. See Labrador's start and how even Trader Dan hasn't made any moves, though probably not for a lack of trying. Deals made during the off-season and the players taken in the draft may have also contributed to the lack of trades in the first few weeks. The Seattle Tsunami for example were built prior to the draft and through their high draft picks. If there is a weakness to this team it's their back-up goaltending and 5-6th defensemen. If they were to make a deal to upgrade either of these minor positions, what sorts of players would they need to give up? And would they actually benefit from such a deal? It's doubtful since they are playing extremely well. The same goes for all the top teams, what kinds of trades are out there that will improve their team but not cost them their required depth? Could this be cause for an amendment to increase the maximum roster size? Having a little wiggle room may entice more trades. It's something to think about since it appears that we'll have a full year to make changes. Imagine having 30 man rosters for the next season! If the league merges into one large entity with more than 14 teams, having a larger roster size might be the only way to make the teams viable. ************************************************************************** RIVERMEN STEAM INTO DIVISION LEAD by Sal Tesoro Peoria(AP)- After 20 games in the young WL season, the Peoria Rivermen have attained heights never before gained by this young franchise. The team finds itself in 1st place in the Howe Division of the WL with a mark of 13-4-3, good for 29 points. The Rivermen are second in the league in goal scoring with 71 goals while only allowing 49 goals, the 3rd lowest total in the division. When asked about his team's success, GM Sal Tesoro points out the one key element that has turned the franchise around. "Goaltending. No question. Last season, we struggled with our goaltending. Our team could score the goals. Unfortunately, we also allowed way too many." He points out the goaltending tandem that is leading the way. "Kiprusoff was a major acquisition. We were excited to see him on the draft board when our turn came in the 1st round of this season's draft. Don't forget Marc Denis. The young veteran has improved greatly over last year. With these 2 guys, we should be in most of our games this year." The statistics bear out GM Tesoro's claim thus far. Kiprusoff is 3rd in the league with a .925 save percentage and a goals against average of 2.21. Not far behind in 6th place is Denis with his .921 save percentage and 2.59 goals against average. To help his goalies, Peoria has assembled a great cast of young defensemen with Adrian Aucoin, Bryan McCabe and Brad Stuart leading the way. In addition to their defensive skills, these young blueliners have a nose for the goal as well. Aucoin and McCabe are 3rd and 4th, respectively, on their team in overall scoring with Stuart not far behind in 6th place. "These guys add a dimension to our team that we lacked last season. We can count on them to clear the crease in the defensive zone and jump into the rush when the play goes the other way," says GM Tesoro. "These guys have made our power play the potent unit it has become." The GM is alluding the Peoria's proficiency on the power play converting on 25% of their chances. GM Tesoro continues. "It's hard to point to one guy and say he is the reason for our early success, but I can't deny Brad Richards his due. He centers our #1 line as well as our #1 power play unit. He plays about 18 minutes a game and gives it his all the whole time. He makes his teammates that much better." Richards currently leads the team with 29 points in 20 games (13 goals and 16 assists). "It's hard to believe we can continue at this pace," Tesoro says with a smile, "but I'm not complaining. After the dismal season we had last year, it's nice just seeing the smiles in the locker room after a big win. There wasn't a lot to smile about last year. I just hope we can ride this wave for as long as it lasts." ************************************************************************** NEW COACH FOR BRANDON by Greg Lees Wheat Kings Owner/GM Greg Lees today introduced Jerry Butler as the new Head Coach of the Brandon NAL franchise. While Butler was known as a defensive specialist during his playing days with the Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks, he is expected to try to kick start the offence in Brandon. "Jerry will be given free reign, and if he needs some new players we will try to accommodate his wishes" said Lees. "We have already seen a substantial improvement over the first block of games and hope that trend continues. On another note Lees is optimistic that a new lease with more favorable conditions can be negotiated with Brandon city officials. " I would like to stay, but there are many options open." Sources indicate Lees would like to move the team closer to his Toronto area home. Stay tuned for more news on that front. ************************************************************************** NEW OWNER IN SAGINAW COULD MEAN FRANCHISE RELOCATION by Greg Lees The new Owner of the Saginaw Sentinels has come in with an eye to moving the franchise to the Southern Ontario area according to sources. When asked about a potential move Greg Lees was quoted a saying: "We are focusing on trying to salvage something from this season. Any relocation will be discussed with the league and announced at a future date." "We have some good young kids here with the Sentinels and I believe in a few years guys like Fleury, Brown, Hudler and Grebeshkov will be the foundation of a strong team that competes year in and year out. Along with our established young players like Lecavalier, Datsyuk and Hejduk I look forward to our future. It may take a lean year or two however." ************************************************************************** ANOTHER OPTION SHOULD THERE BE NO 2004-05 SEASON by Greg Lees I would like us to consider playing an old season, notably the first year Strat-O-Matic produced an NHL set 1978-1979. I started playing Strat with this set and would very much enjoy playing a season with them. There were 17 NHL teams so we could continue on with 14 teams in each league, or less if some owners were not interested in playing without current cards.
