Several owners have given up or disappeared, see "Ownership Changes in the WSHL" below. The Inside Shots may have thumped everyone in the preseason tournament, but the regular season is completely different as they discovered with a dreadful home start. Asked about the Labrador Moose being in first place after a predicted last place finish, Mike Webb said, "They're a good team that gives 110%. Dan has a system and his players have bought into it, affording them a great start." Other sources close to the Commissioner had other things to say, "the cap is a good idea..." But before more could be elicited, Bob Goodenow and his hired goons gang tackled and dragged the informant away. Later when re-interviewed, the informant said, "Labrador is a good team that gives 110%. And their balanced system is working for them." The change in statements was passed off as a Kerryism by league officials. "People flip-flop all the time and since Kerry's campaign, there's been a dramatic increase in wishy-washiness." From worst to first? That's the headline in Seattle. The Tsunami were last year's cellar-dwelling team in the Western Conference. With the help of some off-season trades and a draft that stressed the now, Seattle has turned heads with their 8-2-0 record. Trailing them by just a few points is a Calgary team in need of new ownership. But if the league must control the team, can they be expected to maintain their current position? Seattle isn't the only team to amass 16 points in the first bi-week. The Ibiza Corsairs in the World League have also accumulated 16 points. They played a 7-1-2 record to take control of their Western Conference. ************************************************************************** 4.01c SOMH PATCH Be sure that you download and install the 4.01c before creating your block two managers. You might think that with the NHL in a lock- out the members of the WSHL would have more free time available. Such is not the case as we had a record number of owners step down from managing their teams. Gone will be David Sheedy, owner of two franchises, the Saskatoon Blades (WL) and the Brandon Wheat Kings (NAL). Denis Derby and Kevin Brady will also join him by stepping away from their North American League teams, the Iowa Wolves (Derby) and Calgary Grizzlies (Brady). Who will take up the slack? The World League it seems is in better shape, finding Steve Ciomek (sciomek@netscape.com) to fill the manager position in Saskatoon. Sheedy's other team, the Wheat Kings will be run by Greg Lees (gl50missioncap@yahoo.ca). The remaining two NAL franchises will for the time being be run by the league. If you know a capable owner, please direct them to contact the Commissioner, Mike Webb. In other related news, Jason McCorrister will need to take a month long leave of absence as he transitions to his new job in Borneo! After getting settled in, he expects to return to the league, where he'll compete for another chance at a championship. Until that time, the team will be managed by the league, unless an associate volunteers to manage the team during Jason's absence. ************************************************************************** LATE BREAKING NEWS ON A NEW OWNER! Unconfirmed reports suggest that Mike Steudle (Mikesteudle@yahoo.com) will become the new owner to either the Iowa Wolves or Calgary Grizzlies. When and if the announcement comes from the commissioner's office, please give him a nice welcome. For Dan Irvine, we're sure it'll come with some trade offers. =) This will bring the number of Mikes in the NAL to four. When asked if there's a Mike conspiracy, Mike Webb was unavailable for comment, but sources indicate that such a thought isn't beyond reason. "How many Mikes are there in the world? Imagine the number of Lees would have if we were based in China or Taiwan." ************************************************************************** HOCKEY WITH HORSEPOWER RETURNS TO LEXINGTON by Mike Kuduk On October 26, "hockey with horsepower" returned to Rupp Arena as an NAL record crowd of 23,012 saw the Lexington Thoroughblades down the Labrador Moose, 4-0. The game was the culmination of several years of effort which went into attracting a pro hockey team back to Lexington after the AHL Thoroughblades moved to Cleveland three years ago. Former Lexington mayor Pam Miller spearheaded the effort to move the team from Alaska to the Bluegrass, assembling a tasty relocation package as well as favorable lease terms with the Lexington Center, which owns the arena. She said during the game, "It's great having hockey back in Lexington, especially a competitive team in a talented league. We realize that we can't compete with UK basketball in the winter, but there is plenty of fan support to allow another team in a different sport to share the spotlight. The NAL schedule also helps us out in the spring, as it ends sooner than the AHL's did. You know, there's a little thing we have here called Derby in May." Rupp Arena, one of the largest non-domed indoor arenas in the country, was sold out months ago for the event. Fans were enthusiastic about the debut, especially after the T-Blades scored three times within a 7 minute stretch in the first period. Laverne Hatton said, "It's great to have a true pro team in Lexington. This is a college town but we have plenty of room for pro sports." After the T-Blades' third goal Bob Smith said, "It's louder in here than during a basketball game!" The comparisons to basketball continued all night throughout the stands, as professional hockey at the highest level continued to make rapid inroads into the heart of hoops country. GM Mike Kuduk and coach Nick Fotiu have put together a talented team which puts defense first. The goaltending combination of Roloson, Fernandez and Esche brings back memories of the old Thoroughblades, who at one time or another had Eugeni Nabokov and Mikka Kiprusoff wearing the teal and purple. Both are now considered among hockey's best goaltenders. Lexington is a bit short on snipers and pure goal scorers, but should score their share of goals on the power play Coach Fotiu said, "The thing I like about this team is that everybody gets back and plays defense. In pre-season we weren't giving up many odd man rushes, and were counter- attacking effectively. That's the way I like it." ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN PRESEASON TOURNAMENT I'd like to thank the teams involved in the first NAL preseason tournament. It was a success despite Steve stepping down from coaching his team. I unfortunately couldn't replace him as coach of the Wellington Dukes as the team record shows. =P The home ice advantage was just that, the big advantage allowing each home team to win their game in the single-game elimination rounds. The Shots man-handled the Dukes with a 6-1 routing. They even managed to score on a penalty shot! Pierre Dagenais was given a penalty shot with just three seconds remaining in the first. His goal ended up being the game winner. For Kent Kounty, the semi-finals were just as kind to them as they were to Wellington. The Killer Kittens were the ones that got killed, 5-1 by the Lexington Thoroughblades. A last minute shorthanded goal by Martin St. Louis in the third period kept the game from being a shutout. For the final game of the tournament, the Thoroughblades faced the Shots. It was Lexington that handed Inside their only defeat in the tournament, a 3-2 overtime affair. Knowing their tricks, the Shots were better prepared and fought for a 4-2 victory. Special teams was the key to this game. Both teams managed to score twice with the man-advantage, but Inside managed to capitalize on their chances despite being out shot 48-22. Doubling the Shots in shots didn't help Lexington as Manny Legace stopped the necessary pucks for them to win the game and tournament.
