Your computer manager is due to the commissioner by Thursday night. Some time over the weekend a new league file will be posted with all the valid managers loaded into it. When you're notified by Mike, download and unzip the file to your 'SOMH\DATA' directory and begin playing your block one games. If you need help creating a manager, please read the "COMPUTER MANAGER DETAILS" section below. It has some helpful hints and a recap of some of the more important rules for manager construction. You can further read the constitution for added clarification. For those who want to plan ahead, here is the schedule for each block of games. Every block with the exception of block five consists of ten games, five at home and five away. Block five has 12 games, six at home and six away. It also is one week longer than normal since it falls during the winter vacation time that many people use to gather with friends and family. Block Starting Date - End Date 1 October 25th - November 6th 2 November 8th - November 21st 3 November 22nd - December 4th 4 December 6th - December 19th 5 December 20th (3-weeks, 6 home/6 away) - January 9th 6 January 10th (trade deadline, end of this block) - January 23rd 7 January 24th - February 4th 8 February 7th - February 17th Special thanks to Dan Irvine for his preseason rankings for both the NAL and WL. Mike Kuduk came up with another interesting idea for the league to look at if the NHL lockout forces the season to be cancelled. In the next newsletter or two I'll compile a list of ideas that have been mentioned. If you have any ideas I'm sure we'd all like to hear them. ************************************************************************** 2004-2005 WL PRE-SEASON RANKING by Dan Irvine Aberdeen Flying Scotsmen Ranking - 1 Strengths - Very well balanced team with good scoring in Naslund, Elias and Jagr and good team defense as well as solid goaltending. Weaknesses - Need to get consistent scoring help from support cast to maintain top ranking. Outlook - As long as they can get consistent scoring and goaltending performs well they will be team to beat. Monarch Lions Ranking - 2 Strengths - Last years Molson Cup winner are again the team that will set the standard. With Sundin, Iginla, Alfredsson, Draper and a good corps of defensemen and goalies this team could REPEAT. Weaknesses - Like Aberdeen they will need consistent scoring from support staff and will need good effort from goalies. Outlook - Could very well be a team on the verge of a dynasty??? Ottawa Axemen Ranking - 3 Strengths - This team has more scoring balance on all 4 lines than any other team in the WL, led by Lang, Havlat & Tanguay. Plus top goaltender in Raycroft. Weaknesses - Overall team defense and corps of defensemen is not as strong as the top 2 teams but they still may out score you. Outlook - Team defense and intimidation is a weak spot but with all the scoring they have it may not matter, what's wrong with 6-5 games anyways. South Shore Snipers Ranking - 4 Strengths - They have the best group of 5 defensemen in the league, and a top goaltender in Brodeur as well as a tremendous depth at center. Weaknesses - Biggest weakness is lack of natural scoring, as Sakic and Modin will have to carry the load. Outlook - If they can get enough scoring, with their team defense and goaltending they will be tough. If their team scoring is low their ranking will be as well. Kodiak Attack Ranking - 5 Strengths - Another team with good scoring in Forsberg, Hossa, Jokinen and Fedorov. Team will need to use power play goals to their advantage. Weaknesses - The biggest weakness is having Forsberg for only part of the season. Goaltending may be a concern as well. Outlook - One of the better scoring teams with a full line-up, will need their special teams to come up big and their goaltending to hold the fort down to keep this high ranking. Saginaw Sentinels Ranking - 6 Strengths - This team may surprise people, with lots of young talent in LeCavalier, Datsyuk, Hejduk, Hunter, Zetterberg, Morrow etc. Scoring should not be a problem for them. Weaknesses - Their defensemen are not great as a group and goaltending may be a problem. Outlook - If their goaltending holds up and their defensemen perform well this team could be a dark horse of the bunch. Floral Park Falcons Ranking - 7 Strengths - Team has a lot of good young talent which bodes well for the future. Nash, St Louis and Heatley lead the way. Weaknesses - With Heatley playing part time Nash & St Louis will have to put up big numbers consistently. Outlook - One of those teams that could move up or down depending on how well their stars Nash & St Louis perform. Omaha Knights Ranking - 8 Strengths - Much like South Shore good depth at center and good offensive defensemen in Gonchar, Schneider & Zubov. Weaknesses - Again team scoring may be a problem for this team, as well the goaltending is not as strong as others. Outlook - Will need timely scoring and solid goaltending to compete for playoff spot. Saskatoon Blades Ranking - 9 Strengths - Has top sniper in Guerin and 3 top defensemen in Chara, Pronger & Souray. Weaknesses - Team scoring a concern as well as goaltending. Outlook - Another team that will need timely scoring and solid goaltending to compete for playoff spot. Hibbing Stink Badgers Ranking - 10 Strengths - Has leagues best goalie in Luongo, decent team defense. Weaknesses - No real snipers on the team to rely on. Outlook - Will need balanced scoring and Luongo to stand on his head to make push into the top 8. Peoria Rivermen Ranking - 11 Strengths - Has top goaltender in Kiprusoff with Aucoin, McCabe and Richards. Weaknesses - Lack of scoring may hurt them and the fact that Kiprusoff only plays part time. Outlook - If Kiprusoff plays extremely well and they can score on special teams they may make a push for playoff position. Sufferin Succotash Ranking - 12 Strengths - This team is hard to read, have good young players in Ruutu, Redden, Briere and solid goaltending. Weaknesses - Team defense is a concern and overall scoring. Outlook - If they can score some goals and their special teams perform well they as well could make push for playoff spot. Albany River Rats Ranking - 13 Strengths - Good defensemen in Hill & Zhitnik and good goaltending. Weaknesses - Again team scoring is a concern, Ryder, Hull & Nagy will have to have great seasons. Outlook - Will need to improve on their team defense and maybe obtain more scoring to compete at higher level. Ibiza Corsairs Ranking - 14 Strengths - One of the best young players in the game in Kovalchuk but supporting cast is weak. Theodore gives them good goaltending. Weaknesses - Team defense, scoring is a weak spot. Team - West Coast Express Ranking - 2 ODDS - 3-1 Comments - Another team that has good overall balance, may need to make some moves to spread some of their talent at center around. Team - Kent Kounty Killer Kittens Ranking - 3 ODDS - 4-1 Comments - Team made a number of moves in pre-season to improve, not much weakness on this team. Team - Kansas City Outlaws Ranking - 4 ODDS - 5-1 Comments - May need an improvement of their defensemen as a group to win it all, or maybe not? Team - Inside Shots Ranking - 5 ODDS - 5-1 Comments - Another balanced team with a manager with a knack for dealing could move improve their chances. Team - Wellington Dukes Ranking - 6 ODDS - 8-1 Comments - Balanced team that still requires a bona fide scorer to compete for title. Team - Kentucky Ice Tigers Ranking - 7 ODDS - 10-1 Comments - Team certainly has the nucleus to perform well, just depends how well their defensemen and goaltending hold up. Team - Seattle Tsunami Ranking - 8 ODDS - 15-1 Comments - Will need Luongo to have great season for them to compete for the title. Team - Red Deer Avros Ranking - 9 ODDS - 20-1 Comments - If they can make some moves to give them more depth then their odds will improve. Team - Lexington Thoroughblades Ranking - 10 ODDS - 25-1 Comments - If this team gets some timely scoring they may be the long shot bet of the group. Team - Brandon Wheat Kings Ranking - 11 ODDS - 40-1 Comments - Despite a top notch group of defensemen there is s definite lack of scoring that will hurt them. Team - Calgary Grizzlies Ranking - 12 ODDS - 60-1 Comments - Team may be relying on Fedorov too much and Forsberg playing part time doesn't help them. Team - Iowa Wolves Ranking - 13 ODDS - 75-1 Comments - Hejduk and Jokinen will have to play extremely well to carry this team to a higher level. Team - Ibiza Corsairs Ranking - 14 80-1 Comments - Team is in rebuilding mode. ************************************************************************** STEP-BY-STEP WSHL PROCEEDURES Just a reminder on how things work in the WSHL. 1. Download the league files at Yahoogroups.com. World League - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLWL/files North American League - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLNAL/files 2. Unzip the file(s) to your "SOMH\Data" directory. 3. Start your SOMH game. 4. Select the league, i.e. 2004-05 NAL. 5. Select your team, i.e. Inside Shots 6. Pull down the "Team" menu and select "Computer Manager" or have the program "Generate Computer Manager" for your initial manager. Then edit the manager to your liking. See below for manager details. 7. Export your manager by going to the "Team" menu and selecting "Export Computer Manager." 7a. When exporting your manager, you'll be asked for a lockout code. Hit "Enter" if you don't want one. If you input one, write it down so you don't forget it. If you have a code, you'll be asked for it every time you access your manager. 7b. Save your manager in location that you can remember. I'd suggest creating a folder in your main SOMH directory just for computer managers. I'd then suggest a separate folder for each team if you wish to keep a copy of every manager. Using team initials can help you index them. 8. E-mail your manager to Mike Webb along with the following information: your lockout code (if you use one), and your line orders by period. 9. When all the managers are submitted, Mike will repost the league file with all the managers loaded. You'll then need to download the league file for a second time. 10. If you want, edit your manager for your home games and then play your games. 10a. Feel free to lose all your games against the Seattle Tsunami. =) 11. E-mail your home game results to the league sub-list (WL or NAL). Include the box score and export file. 11a. The box score if you don't save it yourself will be located in your "SOMH\PRINT" directory with a name using your opponent's initials, vs your team's initials, the date of the game (year, month, day) and the text extension. 11b. The export file is located in your "SOMH\EXPORT" directory with the name using your opponent's initials, vs your team's initials, the date of the game (year, month, day) and the "EXP" extension. 12. Repeat from step #1 after Mike updates the league file with all the played games. ************************************************************************** COMPUTER MANAGER DETAILS To insure that there are fewer mistakes in the first block of managers, here are some reminders and hints. 1. You must have 2 goalies, 12 forwards and 5 defensemen dressed. There is an additional 1 player that can be a forward or defenseman. A total of 18 skaters and 2 goalies are suited up for each game. 2. For the first two periods, there is no double shifting for forwards. In the third period, one forward may double shift. 3. For all periods, ONE defenseman may double shift. A defenseman may only double shift once. 4. Players may only play their carded positions, with a few exceptions: forwards may play defense if rated to play the point during a power play, and centers may play the wing during shorthanded and 4 on 4 situations. 5. Forwards playing the point may play on PP#1 if they are rated '**'. If they are rated '*' they may only play the point on PP#2. 6. Goalies may be pulled or switched, but remember that we are using goaltender fatigue. Be sure that if your goalie is pulled, he isn't being over fatigued. 7. Overtime lines leave the center position empty. Centers may play on the wing. One forward and one defenseman may double shift once. Use three different forward lines and pairs of defensemen. 8. Player Shot Rotation should be set so that your highest rated offensive players are selected first. Thus your Offense 4's shoot before your Offense 3's then 2's and finally 1's. There are 18 skaters and two goalies. In the example, each position has a player assigned a number based on the initial line they play on, LW-1 stands for #1 Left Wing. The missing player could be a defenseman or a forward, but in this example, the missing player does not play on any line in any situation. ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN PRESEASON TOURNAMENT The preliminary round was a success. The Inside Shots earned the top seed with a 5-0-0-1 record. They'll have the privilege to face the Wellington Dukes on their home ice in the tournament semi-finals. The Dukes were plagued with on-ice mistakes. Ill-timed penalties and a lack of sustained offense garnered a single win for the team in the first round of play. When compared to one another, the two teams are polar opposites, with Wellington being the negative to Inside's positive. The other tournament match-up will consist of Kent Kounty visiting Lexington. For a while it looked as if the Thoroughblades were going to trounce the tournament teams. But when the Shots visited them in Lexington, they showed them to be second best for the purpose of seeding. The winner of each game will move on with the higher seed having the home ice advantage. I would leave the current teams alone for a year, and instead have a temporary league for a year based on nationality - e.g. Russians, Swedes, Kazaks, etc. For the large, hockey rich nations such as Canada, multiple teams could be made. The way the league database is structured, players could easily be sorted and arranged by their birthplace. You could even break Canada, the U.S. and Russia down into different provinces/regions. I think 14 to 16 different - and interesting - teams could be fielded. ************************************************************************** NHLPA ANNOUNCES NEW THEME SONG by Scott Shigemi With public relations being what they are, the NHLPA has informed its fans that the union is taking their concerns into consideration. They feel for Joe Fan and suggest that if you wish to ease the pain and suffering from the lack of NHL hockey you listen to their new theme song by the Beatles, Money (That's What I Want).
