Good thing we only do this once a year! =) There were a few hitches, but we managed to avoid most of the bigger bumps and get through it without too many mistakes. For those in the NAL, please take the time to go through your posted rosters, draft picks and then check them against the Strat-o-matic league file that is posted at the NAL Yahoo Groups site. The current league file contains the 2004-05 schedule. I ran a test season and everyone played 82 games with a 41/41 split between home and away games. Each block will have each team playing the same number of games. This should keep everyone's records close, and prevent some lopsided trades from occuring. I mean is there anything worse than to see a guy get traded and end up playing 90 games? I'll post the first block of games below. For the World League, the draft was pushed back two weeks. It now falls on Tuesday, September 21st. Mike will be using an AIM chat room for the draft. Be sure that he has your AIM name so he can invite you into the draft room! Will he have a continual update of current rosters, draftable and drafted players? I'm not sure what Mike's plans are for doing this, so you had better make plans to do this yourself. There's nothing worse than picking five players and finding out that they have all be taken. =( If you can't attend the draft, it is my suggestion that you find a draft buddy to make your selections for you. Mike will have enough on his plate to make his picks and update the draft at the same time. I know, because I was making picks for my team, three others and updating two lists. If you're worried about someone stealing your picks, you might find someone in the NAL who can make the picks for you, if they decide to attend. ************************************************************************** WORLD LEAGUE STRAT FILE AVAILABLE Thanks to Mike, I'll be uploading another version of the league file for the World League. It'll contain the 2004-05 schedule. Also, this is your chance to see the first listing for the World League's list of draftable players. The description for the file reads, "2004-05 World League Strat League Files w/schedule for predraft." ************************************************************************** 2004-2005 NAL PRE-SEASON RANKINGS by Dan Irvine Hello All It's that time of the year again when we all sort thru are teams, mix and match line combinations in our heads and dream of the elusive NAL Championship Title. This seasons rankings were tougher than last season as there seems to be a lot more parity this year. There are some teams that with a couple of deals could be very tough to beat, such as Newark, Kentucky and Wellington. Others such as West Coast, Kent Kounty, Kansas and Inside Shots may only need minor tweaking to be top contenders. The group of teams ranked between 7 to 11 are all very close in talent and they all are capable of moving up or down 2-3 notches in the rankings depending on trades and how well their top stars perform. I hope you enjoy the preview and look forward to a great year. Note: "the opinions expressed are not necessarliy those of the WSHL" Rank #1 - Newark Hen House Strengths - This team has an extremely talented group of forwards in, Elias, Sakic, Doan, Sundin and Gomez with a very respectable group of defencemen as well. Weaknesses - The only weakness they have is in goal Outlook - If they can improve their goaltending this team will definitely be the team to beat. Rank #2 - West Coast Express Strengths - A very talented young team that could be very good for a long time. With the likes of Datsyuk, Tanguay, Thornton, Richards, Ruutu and Hunter. Good defencemen as well in Jovanovski, Hannan and Ohlund. Weaknesses - They are very deep at the center position and may need to spread some talent around. Defence and intimidation on the forwards may hurt them. Outlook - If they can get good production from their 3 rating offensive players Tanguay and Datsyuk and spread some talent around they will be a force now and for years to come. Rank #3 - Kent Kounty Killer Kittens Strengths - Very balanced lineup throughout, with St Louis and LeCavalier leading the way with good supporting cast of Briere, Ryder and Morrow. Also have top notch goaltending in Raycroft. Weaknesses - May have to rely to heavily on St Louis and LeCavalier and may be a little short on overall team intimidation. Outlook - If St Louis and leCavalier perfom at a top level than this team can be one of the teams to beat, if not then they will drop a few notches. Rank #4 - Kansas City Outlaws Strengths - Another talented young team with great talent such as Havlat, Nash, Spezza and Marleau. Top notch goalie in Brodeur. Weaknesses - Their group of defencemen may not be as good as the teams above them but not far behind. Outlook - A balanced team with little weakness this team could be the darkhorse team to beat. Rank #5 - Inside Shots Strengths - A very balanced team similar to Kent Kounty, Alfredsson, Naslund and partime Heatley lead the way with a solid supporting cast. Chara, Hill and solid goaltending also help. Weaknesses - Again this team may have to rely to heavily on Naslund and Alfredsson, if the supporting cast can add a few goals they will be tough. Outlook - With Heatley only playing part of the season they will have to rely on Naslund and Alfredsson to lead team. Again if they can make the right deals and obtain some more scoring they will be on of the top teams. Rank #6 - Wellington Dukes Strengths - This team can roll out 4 solid lines to keep pressure on opponents. Led by Demitra, Blake, Dumont, McCauley etc, and has veteran leadership in Yzerman. Group of defencemen led by McCabe, Johnsson and Hulse are good as well. Also very good in net. Weaknesses - Weakness appears to be lack of a "Sniper" on the team. Other than that a very well rounded team. Outlook - This team could go up a few notches if they can obtain a player in the sniper category and could become one of the top teams, definitely one to watch. Rank #7 - Kentucky Ice Tigers Strengths - They have 3 great snipers on this team in Kovalchuk, Lang and Guerin with supporting players such as Walker, Weight as well. Weaknesses - This teams group of defencemen are not very strong and will have to perform very well to maintain this position. Goaltending is also a very big question mark. Outlook - If their goaltending holds up and they can improve on their defencemen then watch out, if not then they could easily move downward several notches. Rank #8 - Seattle Tsunami Strengths - Young star Hosssa as well as Tkachuk and Nagy are the scoring threats. Also have some nice supporting staff in Koivu, Rucchin, Drake, Yashin to round out forwards. Also have scoring threat from the point in Leetch and having the games best young goaltender in Luongo helps as well. Weaknesses - A balanced scoring attack be become a problem and the teams group of defencemen overall are not quite as good as some of the top teams. Outlook - If Luongo can have stellar season and this team gets good scoring production than they should have no problem making the playoffs and competing. Rank #9 - Red Deer Avros Strengths - Have 2 superstars in Iginla who has arguably the best card this year and Jagr with solid centers in Holik and Madden. Big Pronger on the point helps as well. Weaknesses - Lack of team depth is a problem as is lack of solid starter in goal. Outlook - Will need to have Iginla and Jagr performing at the top of their game to press for playoff spot. If they can and the goaltending holds up they should make playoffs. Rank #10 - Lexington Thoroughblades Strengths - Another team that can rollout 4 balanced lines with good team defence, led by Aucoin, Lidstrom, Brindamour, Rolston etc. Good goaltending as well. Weaknesses - Team goal production may be a problem as they have very little natural goal scoring ability. Will need to have some players perform better than their card to make the playoffs. Outlook - This team is very well balanced and could very well be a force if they can get goal scoring production from their forwards. If they do they will move up several notches. Rank #11 - Brandon Wheat Kings Strengths - They have good balance throughout forwards and a star studded defencemen corp led by Blake, Niedermayer and Zhitnik. Weaknesses - Lack of scoring will be a concern for this team especially with Palffy playing part time. Outlook - If they cannot score enough goals this team will be hard pressed for playoff spot. Rank #12 - Calgary Grizzlies Strengths - Team has superstars in Forsberg and Fedorov as well as leagues top goaltender in Kiprusoff but very weak after that. Weaknesses - Team defence and depth is a problem as well as a balanced scoring attack. Forsberg only playing part time doesn't help either. Outlook - This team can go either way, move some of their aging stars for future or try and make some moves to battle for a playoff spot. Will be a very tough season for them. Rank #13 - Iowa Wolves Strengths - Last years NAL finalist will be hard pressed to make playoffs this season. They do have a few young stars such as Hejduk, Jokinen and Cheechoo along with Gonchar and Foote on the point. Weaknesses - Team depth and team defence are a problem and they are also very weak in goal. Outlook - Could be a long season for this team, look for them for make some further rebuilding moves. Rank #14 - Labrador Moose Strengths - Last years NAL Champion has come a long way down after mortgaging this season to win last year. Can roll out 4 lines that are similar but all average in scoring department. Weaknesses - Goaltending and team scoring will be a problem this year. May be a long year for the Moose. Outlook - This team is in the rebuilding mode and should not be able to mount any change, has outside chance at playoff spot with the right deals, otherwise maybe next year. ************************************************************************** MOCK SEASON AS SHOWN FROM BELOW AND COMPARED TO DAN'S ANALYSIS Just a little comparison, I ran the current rosters through a season, here are the results compared to Dan's rankings. The River Rats were purchased my Paul earlier this summer and immediately relocated them to that hockey hotbed Albany, New York where they were renamed to the River Rats. The team has signed a 1 year lease with the Pepsi Arena to play all of it's home games. After a day of marketing research the team announced its colors as White, Black and Red. White for when they're home. Black when they're on the road and it's a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. Red on the road and it's not Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. ************************************************************************** BLADES RE-TOOL Saskatoon (AP) - At a press conference called earlier today, Blades GM Brent Ashton announced that they had traded perennial Selke trophy candidate Kris Draper, and a 4th round draft pick, to the championship Monarch Lions for forwards Brendan Shanahan and Jeremy Roenick. "There's no question that Kris Draper is a quality hockey player, who has done terrific work with our hockey club," explained Ashton. "But our team just didn't get it done last year. We feel we're getting two experienced, quality scoring forwards here that know what it takes to win. Shanny and Roenick bring an edge to their game, scoring, and leadership in the dressing room. We wish Kris much success, and welcome these two quality players to our team." The Blades, with the first pick over-all, and two picks in the 2nd round, continue to re-build after missing the play-offs last year. David Sheedy (Saskatoon) ************************************************************************** GETTING THE AXE IN OTTAWA? by Steve Izumi Ottawa has dealt P.Forsberg to Kodiak for J.Spezza and a 4th round pick. Axemen management were concerned with their depth at the forward positions with Forsberg only scheduled to play 39 games. It was definitely hard to trade last years scoring champion, but in acquiring Spezza the Axemen are getting a good, young player with a bright future now that the NHL Ottawa Senators will be implementing a more freewheeling style with the departure of coach Jacques Martin. As usual, the Axemen are open for business with regards to picks and/or players. ************************************************************************** DRAFT DAY DEAL! by Mike Yancharas Kent Kounty Killer Kittens send Kari Lehtonen and Robyn Regher to Labrador for Peter Bondra. Mike Yancharas had this to say: We started working on the deal before live draft night. This was the whole idea behind the Witt pick. He could replace Regher. We love Lehtonen, but also love Fleury and thought the 2 were pretty even. So, when Fleury was still available and we had Witt, we thought it made sense to make the trade. Of course Fleury or any other prospect could go any minute in a trade. There is another goaltender out there we like almost as much as these 2 so hopefully something happens as we're hamstrung by the limit of 3 goalies. ************************************************************************** WSHL'S JOURNEYMAN TITLE GOES TO... by Scott Shigemi Everybody probably knows the player and more-likely the nickname given to goaltender Gary "Suitcase" Smith. As a real "journeyman" player, Smith played for seven different NHL teams in his career. Will Brett Hull end up being Brett "Suitcase" Hull instead of the "Golden Jet" like his father once was? In both leagues, Brett Hull has been exchanged multiple times. While he's on the move in the World League for the first time, he's been traded back and forth between Labrador and Kent Kounty several times this off-season. But before all that, he was a member of the Brandon Wheat Kings. Within the past few months, he has been traded a total of five times, (four in the North American League). He also broke the record for being traded multiple times by the same two teams. The previous record was twice by Peter Forsberg who traveled between the Calgary Grizzlies and Inside Shots. Being traded this many times begs the question, is he wanted by teams, or unwanted? His 25 goals are his lowest output since the 1999-2000 season. As a sniper, he lives and dies by his goal production. With the lock-out looming, how many more years does he have before 20 goals becomes an unreachable number for him? ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE TRIAL SEASON by Scott Shigemi Using computer made managers for the entire season, I simulated the entire 2004-05 NAL season. Please note that this was simply to verify the integrity of the schedule. The results are in no way binding. And in some cases, the results are way off. I mean come on, Steve Sullivan with 61 goals, and 159 points? I will enjoy watching Hartford, now Kansas City go from a 30 point team to a 90. Might be the largest turn-around ever?
