Up three games to none over the Labrador Moose, the Lions looked poised to sweep the series, but the North American champions wouldn't lie down. Their role-players stepped up and combined their performances with some timely goaltending. To see Zigmund Palffy playing for both teams at the same time, it was just a matter of time before one of the clones broke the game six dam. Though Palffy won game six for the Lions, it was another star who took home MVP honors. In the first three games of this series, Brett Hull notched three game winning goals. For this heroic deed, he was named the MVP of the series. "It was a little confusing out there," Hull said after receiving his award. "To see Ziggy playing on both sides, it was mind-boggling." What set this series apart from the others was the free-style Netmeeting play between the two coaches. In all the other Netmeeting games, league officials prevented the visiting team from making spur of the moment changes. This policy seems to be on its way out as Mike Webb had this to say about personalized management. "It was as close as you can get to actually playing the board game in my opinion," said Webb at the series' end. "I would recommend to all, to take the time and play a game over netmeeting with both having control to truly enjoy the board game experience." "It was a pleasure playing my pal Dan in the Final and enjoyed that Dan was more than eager to play face to face. Dan, I applaud you for your record and the fact that you see that this game has more to offer than just a computer manager generated game. It was a pleasure playing you and I hope that all future Molson Cup finalists take the time to play head to head via netmeeting with both managers having control." The Monarch Lions take home all the hardware. They earned the WSHL triple crown: the Eastern Conference title, the World League Molson Cup and the WSHL Championship trophy (is this also called the Molson Cup?). Congratulations to Mike Webb and his Monarch Lions on a terrific season! ************************************************************************** TEAM NAME AND LOCATION CHANGES For the new team owners, it was asked if you had to keep the same name and location. The answer is no, you don't have to remain the Saratoga Sting, or Hartford Whalers, etc. Feel free to relocate and name your team, but make sure you tell Mike, Dan and me what it's going to be. In fact, I'd recommend writing up an article for the newsletter as part of your announcement. Doug North will be moving the Whalers out of Hartford, but their final destination and name are not yet known. ************************************************************************** WSHL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE It's official, the WSHL champion will take home the Molson Cup. The Molson Cup name for the title beat out the Glen Head Championship trophy by a single vote. Thanks to everyone who voted, you know who you are. - Molson Cup, 5 votes, 41.67% - Glen Head Championship, 4 votes, 33.33% - Sherwood Cup, 1 votes, 8.33% - Top Shelf Cup, 1 votes, 8.33% - Budweiser NGR Cup, 1 votes, 8.33% ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE ROSTER CUTS A change in plans for the North American League cut down day. With the computer game nearly ready to begin shipping (SOM expects to ship the game starting August 1st), the cut down day for the North American League will be pushed back. From the messages I've received, rosters will need to be cut down by August 15th, the third Sunday of the month. I'll release the official rosters, draftable player list and draft order some time after midnight PST, so on Monday drafting by e-mail can begin. Rosters must not exceed 14 protected players (any combination of forwards, defensemen and goalies), plus up to three Right-of-Retention players. ROR players are skaters with 20 or fewer NHL games played or goalies with 10 or fewer games played. Once the cuts have been made and all the rosters are finalized, the draft may begin by e-mail. We'll finish filling out the teams during a live on-line draft. More information on the live draft day will be sent out after the day has been picked. ************************************************************************** 2004-05 SCHEDULE Each block of games is set for a two-week period, with one exception, block five will be a tri-week. Each bi-week will consist of five home and five away games. The tri-week will have six games, home and away. For holiday reasons, block five is an extra week long, starting on December 20th and finishing on January 10th. This block is to give everyone a little extra time for the holidays. If anyone is interested in seeing the full schedule, it will be posted at the archive website unless someone has any objections to the proposed set-up. Block Starting Date 1 October 25th 2 November 8th 3 November 22nd 4 December 6th 5 December 20th (3-weeks, 6 home/6 away) 6 January 10th (trade deadline, end of this block) 7 January 24th 8 February 7th ************************************************************************** LIVE DATE FOR NAL DRAFT With the season expected to begin on October 25th, the live draft should probably be held no later than October 10th, giving Mike or Dan a chance to post the league files. The extra week will also allow everyone a chance to tinker with their rosters and set up their lines. In setting a date for the draft, please take a moment to vote on a date, or multiple dates that will be good for you. If the draft is held on a weekend, we can start at 11 AM Eastern/8 AM Pacific. If everyone takes around a minute to make their selections, it should take us a little over three hours to draft 13 players per team. If we draft during the week, look for a 9 PM Eastern/6 PM Pacific starting time, which probably means multiple nights, unless the East coast members want to stay up past midnight. Wellington sends Morrison, Gerber, and a 3rd round pick to k4 in exchange for Demitra and what was originally Labrador's first round pick. Mike Yancharas had this to say: We were really looking to only add Drury or Morrison but when we thought we had a legitimate shot at both we thought "Why not move Briere out to the wing?" We definitely landed 2 great faceoff men. And of course a good backup goaltender is important to any championship run. We have enough picks now in the 2-4 rounds that we will be able to fill out our roster with quality. We think we are done trading but could always do more if the offer is right. One thing we would be looking to do is trade for an x round draft pick in exchange for x+1 and x+2 draft picks. For example, we'd take a thrd round draft pick in exchange for our 4th and 5th round draft picks. If anyone out wants to do that, we're listening. Wellington confirms the deal. With a surplus of quality netminders, the Dukes were looking to acquire a draft pick in any trade and this deal best suited the overall needs of the team. Demitra is a solid forward and with Handzus, Yzerman and Reichel at center Morrison was a commodity that had trade value.
