American: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLNAL ************************************************************************** WORLD LEAGUE PLAYOFFS Three series lead changes lead up to a game seven all or nothing finals, but at the climax of what should have been a series for the record book, the Kodiak Attack couldn't muster any sign of defense. The Monarch Lions take home the World League Championship Trophy as they beat the Attack senseless in an 8-2 route. "It was quite disappointing," said Kodiak's captain Derian Hatcher. "We battled back to tie the series for the second time and came out flat in the only real must-win game." Take away the score from game seven and the balance between the two teams could be seen clearly. At the end of game six the series was tied at three games apiece. Each team had scored an equal amount of goals, 22. But whether it was fatigue or home ice, Kodiak suffered a complete collapse when J.S. Giguere found himself the subject to a Lion firing squad. A total of 14 goalie rating shots were directed at Giguere. And while he stopped nine of them, the five goals were insurmountable. In fact the three split goals would have been enough for Monarch to win the game, series and championship. With the victory, the Lions will face the North American League champion, Labrador in a best of seven. When asked if there will be any confusion on the ice with Zigmund Palffy playing on both sides, defenseman Ken Klee said, "It won't make any difference to me. During practice I'm always playing against him." The World League's MVP was awarded to Mats Sundin. The Monarch centre was consistently good throughout the entire playoffs. His 15 goals, led the league. What's amazing are the three shorthanded goals he scored in the first two series. Jarome Iginla's finals performance nearly gave him the honors, but with his slow start put Sundin at the top of most ballots. ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE ROSTER CUTS In order to give everyone a chance to prepare for the draft, teams in the North American League will be required to trim their rosters to 14 players plus up to three Right of Retention players by August 1st. Failure to submit roster cuts by midnight PST will cause your team to keep the first 14 players in alphabetical order. Once the cuts have been made, the final NAL draftable list will be posted. I'll include stats and ratings with the final draftable list. This should give everyone around one month to prepare for the live draft and one month to make their roster cuts. ************************************************************************** CONSTITUTION BALLOT Thanks to Mike Webb and Dan Irvine, the WSHL has ratified its constitution for the second time. Here are the ballot items, choices and results: 1) To help reduce ties should we increase the minutes in OT from 5 to 10? 4 - YES 13 - NO Result - Overtime in the regular season will remain 4 on 4 for 5 minutes. 2) Regarding Point usage for forwards on the Power Play, should we: 4 - Keep rule as is where forwards with either * or ** can play the point. 9 - Forwards rated '*' may only play the point on PP#2. '**' players may play the point on either PP. Result - Forwards with a single '*' will be limited to playing the point only on the second power play unit. This doesn't limit them to playing their listed forward positions on the #1 power play unit. 3) Regarding the double shifting of defencemen, should we: 7 - Eliminate double shifting of defencemen completely and use 6 defencemen? 10 - Keep double shifting same as it is now? Result - Teams will continue to be able to play with only 5 defensemen. A different defenseman will be allowed to double shift in each period. 4) Regarding double shifting of one forward in the 3rd period and OT, should we: 6 - Eliminate the double shifting of a forward completely? 11 - Keep double shifting same as it is now? Result - Teams will be required to skate 12 forwards in the first two periods. In the third period and overtime, a single forward will be allowed to double shift. 5) Regarding penalties for over usage of players, should we: 5 - Keep over usage penalties as they are now, no changes. 12 - Keep over usage penalties as they are now, but remove points for games won by the offending team and give them to their opponent at seasons end. Result - Players overused in up to 3 games will be suspended for one post season game per overused game. If a player exceeds his WSHL GP by 4 or more games, he is immediately lost to free agency. Any points gained in a game where a player is overused will be forfeited at the end of the season. In addition, the opposing team will be awarded two points. 6) Regarding roster protection limits for the 2005 season, should we: 10 - Keep the protection limit as is at 14 players. 5 - Increase protection limit to 15 players. 0 - Increase protection limit to 16 players. 2 - Increase protection limit to 17 players. Result - Following the release of the SOMH ratings, teams will be forced to cut down their rosters to 14 combined players, forwards, defensemen, and goalies. Up to three players may be labeled as Right of Retention if they played 20 or fewer games if a forward or defenseman, or 10 or fewer games if they're a goalie. These ROR players count towards the eventual 27 man roster limit, but not the 14-man pre-draft limit. 7) To help maintain a competitive balance should we move the trade deadline up one block? 8 - Yes 9 - No Result - The trade deadline will remain the end of block six. 8) Should goalies be allowed to only play consecutive games during the REGULAR season equal to their fatigue rating? (Penalties for each infraction would be .5 games, rounded down, eg: 3 infractions = 1.5 which would relate to 1.0 playoff games missed. 9 - Yes 8 - No Result - Goaltender fatigue will be used. This means a goalie may not play in more consecutive games than his fatigue rating. Thus if Martin Brodeur has a fatigue rating of 10, he could play in 10 games in a row before needing one game to rest. For every two games that a goalie is over-played above his fatigue rating, he will be suspended for one playoff game. If your goalie starts his max fatigue, be sure to start a different goalie and turn off the "Replace if Fatigued" option if your normal starter is listed as the team's back-up. Note, this is why I suggested we send a manager to our opponents instead of Mike. I can already see goalies being played while fatigued. ************************************************************************** 2004-05 WSHL SCHEDULE It's complete and nearly ready to be imported. All that remains is to assign the games to a date. The breakdown of games goes as follows: 7 blocks with each team playing 5 home and 5 away games. In block 8, teams play 6 home and 6 away games for a total of 82 games and a 41/41 split of home and away games. Each team plays two home and two away games against the opposing conference. Against their own conference, teams play four home and four away games against each team, plus a mix of six more games within their conference. The additional six games are split three at home and three away, but not necessarily against the same three teams. Once given a start date for the season, the games will be plugged in and finalized. The schedule is listed in an Excel file. ************************************************************************** SHOULD WE ALLOW BETWEEN SEASON TRADING? by David Sheedy There has been a flurry of trades recently, mine among them, involving cards that aren't even out yet. I've been wondering, is this fair and ethical? The easy attitude to take is "Buyer Beware", and that everyone enters into such agreements with their eyes wide open - the risk is equal. But is it? Imagine, if you will, that someone had figured out how Strato does their cards (even a partial figuring). There isn't any reason to share that information with others, but is it then fair to engage in a deal with that extra information? I'm all for speculating on whether Ziggy Palffy will have a good card for his 35 games...or in gambling that Patrick Lalime's card will be good because Ottawa is a sound defensive team. But if the guy on the other end of the trade knows that, say, because Palffy's assists fall below a certain threshold he will only be a 2/3 passer, or that goalie roles are based ONLY on save %, and therefore quite predictable without the card, is that an unfair advantage? I mention those two players because I've traded for both, and I have no complaints about having done so. This isn't a bitch session here - but consider the different levels of information available out there: - Some of us have the actual action deckks, enabling us to *count* what comes up in each offense/defense, while others depend only on the computer - There seems to be some 'givens' in thee game, such as the aforementioned save %. If not generally known, is one GM taking advantage of another? - Some of us are on the strato forum. II know of one trade that shifted suddenly because a long-standing stats nut from that forum, pointed out that a particular player was going to have a good card. One manager has that info. Is he just doing good research, or taking advantage of information that others don't have? I guess what I'm saying is, when the cards are in front of you, all bets are even. We can all see, we can all count, and if you aren't careful you have only yourself to blame. Further, it could be said that if I have a concern about trading without cards, I should just not trade until they are in. And risk being left behind, or out of a deal. What is our responsibility as a league, to make sure no one is taken advantage of, or that one manager doesn't exploit a source of information that others aren't privy too? How do we keep our game fair? ************************************************************************** PRESS RELEASE: Brandon Wheat Kings. by David Sheedy In a just completed press conference, Wheat Kings GM Gump Worsley announced a blockbuster deal with the Labrador Moose. Going to the Moose are: Brett Hull Peter Bondra Joe Nieuwendyk Brandon's 3rd round pick in the 2004 draft Coming to Brandon will be: Ziggy Palffy Mario Lemieux Mike Peca Labrador's 2nd round pick Worsley was full of optimism about the trade. "How can this be anything but a plus? We felt that Brett and Peter had done all they could with us. They've had distinguished careers, but with our new change in philosophy there wasn't really a fit. Joe also played well for us this year, and I'm confident that he'll have a great year in Labrador. We just couldn't meet his contract demands. "What can I say about Mario Lemieux? If he only plays one more season after returning from his injury, we'll be honored that it was with us, and I know that season will be remarkable. Ziggy Palffy is going to be a premium player in this league for a long time. I know he's recovering from injury but if the rule of thumb on a trade is 'best player in the deal makes the winner' then I think we have it with these two gentlemen. And Mike Peca brings a defensive dimension to the squad that we were really lacking this year - I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do when matched up with the likes of Palffy or Straka." "The switch in picks was simply for us to offset the loss of Mario while he recovers, with what we hope is a good prospect. The Wheat Kings are looking forward to a new year, with solid prospects" ************************************************************************** SEATTLE BRINGS IN DEFENSIVE CENTRE by Scott Shigemi Seattle, WA (AP) - In what was said to be the first of many deals, the Seattle Tsunami traded away some depth to secure a top notch defensive centre. Hopping on a jet plane to the other side of the country, are Dave Andreychuk and Owen Nolan. How long the pair will remain in Labrador is anyone's guess as Trader Dan gears up for another season of record breaking deals. In return for the two forwards, Seattle gets Steve Rucchin. "We feel that Rucchin will be a better fit for our team," said coach Don Cherry. "He blends defensive discipline, good ice vision, and nastiness with self-control. He's got everything that Dave and Owen have but in one package." Trade analysis favors Labrador as the Moose get some much needed depth. Before the deal, Labrador had a single player with more than 20 goals. Dave Andreychuk brings 21 goals to the team for next season. The two-way centre should see most of his ice time on special teams. Nolan's out of control attitude will probably limit him to Labrador's second line and possibly one of the two power play lines. Seattle gets another solid two-way centre to back-up Saku Koivu. Making their way to the Emerald City are Dan Boyle and Daymond Langkow. Will the sometimes defensively lax defenseman be the solution to Seattle's blueline woes? He did help the Tampa Bay Lightning capture their first Stanley Cup, so the thought is if he can do that, he could do the same for Seattle. Leaving Seattle for Wellington is forward Oleg Kvasha and Jose Theodore. With Luongo firmly set in as the team's number one goalie, Theodore had begun griping about playing time. The Vezina award winning goaltender saw his playing time cut significantly when Seattle drafted him. In addition to the players, the two teams will exchange second round draft choices in the 2004 entry draft. Wellington ends up moving up three spots overall. Overall, trade analyzers deem that this is a lateral move for both teams. Each team is giving away a portion of their strengths to fill holes at key positions. Mike Yancharas had this to say - It looks like our defense is set but we'll still upgrade if the opportunity arises. boucher will come in and be our 2 defenseman. We don't want to focus on Labrador, but so far they've been the only willing dance partner. Now we can focus on getting a backup goaltender and a #1 center. We these players all the best on their new team." ************************************************************************** BLADES TAKE A RISK by David Sheedy Saskatoon Blades GM Pierre Pilot announced a stunning trade tonight, as the pride of Saskatoon, and Calder trophy winner Andrew Raycroft was sent to Ottawa for Zdeno Chara. "No question this was a high risk trade to complete" said Pilot. "I'm in for lots of criticism if this doesn't work out. But Chara is that rare defenceman who can do it all offensively AND defensively, as well play physically. There aren't too many defenseman in our league of his caliber." Asked about the goaltending situation, Pilot replied, "we think with the first pick over-all we can make up for that".
