He's taking over the Campbell River and Saratoga franchises. Any trade ideas for his Saratoga team can be floated by him at: clamarre@crfs.umontreal.ca. A reminder, the World League won't allow trading until the playoffs are completed. Claude has announced that the Campbell River Canucks will be on the move. The new team will be known as the Longue-Pointe Hitmen, named after his Strat baseball team. They will sport a red (primary), white and blue (secondary) jersey. Once again, a big welcome to Claude Lamarre. Good luck Claude! ************************************************************************** WORLD LEAGUE PLAYOFFS Are the Kodiak Attack the Cardiac Kids of the WSHL? They're earning the designation as it takes them three straight overtime games to finally close the book on the Ibiza Corsairs' run in the World League Championship. Not only did Kodiak win three games in overtime, but they needed to come from behind to get the games to into the extra periods. The Corsairs took game one with a comfortable 4-2 victory. Following the game, the Kodiak players held a players-only meeting. When the series continued, the Attack came out with more intensity. "We lit the proverbial fire under ourselves," said veteran captain Mark Messier. The self spoken pep talk may not have had an immediate effect, but eventually the Attack broke through the Ibiza defense to tie and eventually win four straight games. The turning point of the series came in game three when Zac Bierk and Tomas Vokoun battled to post shutouts through regulation. Six minutes in to the overtime period, Jaromir Jagr scored to give Kodiak a 2-1 lead in the series. The international connection of Fedorov, Jagr and Kariya not only scored the game winner, but put the Attack back on the winning track. In the following game, the Corsairs ended up second-guessing themselves. They managed to take an early lead, only to see Kodiak take it away in the second period. Going into the third, Ibiza stole the lead back, but Marian Hossa's late period goal tied the game to force a second overtime game in as many nights. Losing one overtime game may cause heads to droop, but when Mike Johnson came through three minutes into the extra period to lift Kodiak to their third straight victory, the Corsairs may have buried their heads in the sand if the game were played on the beach. Not wanting to see a third overtime in the fifth game, Ibiza came out with a new strategy, shoot from anywhere and everywhere. Doing this, the Corsairs built a 2-0 lead through the first 20 minutes of the game. Long rebounds with their defensemen still pinching caused several odd-man rushes going in the wrong direction. Kodiak slowly tied the game at two goals apiece. Heading into overtime for the third straight game, the questions and doubts on whether they could win one were nearly bushed aside as the first overtime ended without a goal. If it weren't for Sean Burke the series might have gone to a sixth game, but the Kodiak goalie stopped 19 out of 20 goalie ratings and 59 out of 61 shots. The Attack's 45th shot on Manny Legace found the back of the net and allow Kodiak to advance. Mike Johnson was awarded player of the series with his two overtime game-winning goals. ************************************************************************** HIBBING CONCEEDS ROUND TWO In a show of the best sportsmanship, the Hibbing Stink Badgers announced that they concede round two to the Kodiak Attack. In the original playoff match-ups, Hibbing and Kodiak faced one another in the first round where the Attack swept the literal Stinkin' Badgers. The World League finals will consist of Kodiak facing Monarch. The Lions will sport the home ice advantage with their superior record. ************************************************************************** SEATTLE ANNOUNCES NEW HEAD COACH Is Seattle and the Pacific Northwest the new Coach's Corner? In breaking news, the Tsunami announced that they have come to terms with CBC and hockey legend, Don Cherry. The host of Hockey Night In Canada's Coach's Corner will travel south of the boarder to become Seattle's new head coach and general manager. "This is a swell bunch of guys," said Cherry as he showed off his latest fashion road kill. "But if they think I'm in for all of that touchy feely hockey, they're in for a surprise. We're going to work harder than any team in the WSHL. We're going to battle in the corners and play the game in the old fashion Canadian way." ************************************************************************** REVIEW BOARD ADDED TO WSHL I think I've got this right, six managers have volunteered to form two review boards for each league. Their responsibilities will be finalized in the constitution, but should include things like analyzing protests from games played to unbalanced trades.
