The second seeded Aces fell to the Shots in four games despite having one of the league's top ranked defenses and goaltender duo. Top ranked Labrador needed six games to move past Kent Kounty. The game five overtime loss crushed the Killer Kittens' spirit. In game six they were blanked by Marty Turco. In the west, both series went the distance. Home ice proved to be a real advantage as the home teams won both game sevens. Fatigue shouldn't make much of a difference when Red Deer and Iowa face one another in the Conference Finals. The one question on everyone's mind, which game will Chris Pronger play? The mighty defenseman has been hobbled all year, limiting his play to just five games. Over in the World League, only one series would see a seventh game. The third seeded Ottawa Axemen came from behind to win the final two games to move on. They weren't the only #3 seed to win, the Kodiak Attack won all four games to sweep the Aberdeen Flying Scottsmen. This pits the Attack against last season's winner, Campbell River. The Canucks are coming off a six game series, so will fatigue be an issue? For the Axemen, they face the top seeded Monarch Lions. Monarch has watched Ottawa grind away in their seven game series while resting up for the Conference Finals. The Lions may not be as solid as their record makes them appear to be as they used three different goalies to get past the Floral Park Falcons. ************************************************************************** WSHL 2003-2004 Playoff Preview (Round 2) by Dan Irvine Matchups - Labrador vs Inside Shots Prediction - Labrador in 7 Comments - Some people in the media may argue that this is the real NAL Championship game. But with so much parity in the WSHL it may not be the case. This is a battle between 2 teams that have been ranked in the top 3 in the NAL all season long. Both teams have good scoring and defence amongst their forwards with Labrador having possibly a touch more scoring. Inside Shots would appear to have an edge in defensive corps, having the 1-13 Chara out their. Goaltending is more or less even as well. Labrador will have to contain Naslund & Heatley where as the Inside Shots will have to contain Palffy & Kovalev. The regular season record is no help as Labrador had slight edge 3-2-2. Only other option to tell these teams apart would be their overall record with Labrador having the better regular season record, thus it is on that basis and home ice advantage that we predict a Labrador victory in seven. Matchups - Iowa vs Red Deer Prediction - Iowa in 7 Comments - This looks to be another evenly matched series that could go seven games. Both teams have offensive threats but may have trouble stopping each other's snipers. Red Deer's defensemen are a little more defensive minded where Iowa's are a little more offensive minded. Same with the forward lines Iowa with a little more offensive power and Red Deer a little more defensive strength. Red Deer has Madden & Walz to try a stop Jokinen, but both teams do not have much in the way of stopping the likes of Jagr, Iginla, Hejduk and Sanderson. This may turn out to be a very high scoring series. Iowa's Foote & Stevens will play a big factor as will home ice advantage. This series might come down to team that performs best on special teams. Look for this series to go seven. Matchups - Monarch vs Ottawa Prediction - Monarch in 7 Comments - This should be a highly entertaining series as both teams have a well balanced attack and the two coaches have battled a number of times over the years. Ottawa has an edge in goal with Roy and an edge on defence with a very good core of defencemen. Monarch has a little more scoring up front and has home ice advantage. This is another series where special team performance will be key. If the old saying build from the net out means anything than give Ottawa the edge. If Monarch continues their stellar play on special teams than they have an edge. This series could go either way, strickly based on home ice advantage I am predicting a Monarch victory, but one away victory by Ottawa and they will be in the driver seat. Matchups - Campbell River vs Kodiak Prediction - CRC in 7 Comments - A classic battle of offense versus defence. The WL defending Champion CRC has a ver good mix of defence, scoring & goaltending. Kodiak's success comes from their godd scoring attack led by Hossa, Jagr & Fedorov. Can CRC contain Kodiak's attack? Can Kodiak penetrate what is probably the best team of defencemen in the league led by Blake, Lidstrom, Foote & Jovanovski? CRC has a huge edge with their defencemen and Kodiak has a slight edge in forwards and possibly in goaltending. This series as well could go either way, if CRC contains Kodiak's offensive attack then they will win, and with CRC having the experience from last years playoffs I am going to predict they win in 7. But I would not be suprised if Kodiak won in 6. ************************************************************************** LOTTERY DRAFT! With no objections, the draft for the non-playoff teams will proceed as soon as Mike is finished checking the lottery program. If anyone else wants to check the source code, e-mail Scott Shigemi. Once the okay is given, the draft will be held live over Netmeeting, allowing everyone to watch the computerized balls chosen. Plan on April 28th for the live draft, 9 pm EST/6 pm PST. The teams involved in the lotteries are for the North American League: Hartford Whalers, Kentucky Ice Tigers, Seattle Tsunami, West Coast Express, Calgary Grizzlies, and Wellington Dukes. The World League lottery teams are: Barbary Coast Whalers, Dakota Mustangs, Peoria Rivermen, Saskatoon Blades, Portland Buckaroo, and Saginaw Sentinels. The balls allowed for each team will be: 322, 231, 168, 124, 90, 65 in order of last place (14th) to 9th place. *Last minute note, Mike has given me the green light, so on April 28th (Wednesday), I'll hold the draft. Use your e-mail, Mike sends them to the league mailing lists. 2. Unzip the files into your SOMH/DATA folder, overwriting if necessary. Make sure that SOMH is not running. 3. Start SOMH 4. Create a computer manager and export it. 5. Send your unzipped road manager to Mike and/or your league 6. Wait for Mike to release an updated league zip with the bi-week's road managers. 7. Play your home games. 11. Save your home boxscores and export files. 12. Send your unzipped home boxscores and export files to your league mailing list. Do not send them to the general list! Download the playoff game files once Mike has posted them. They'll be located in their proper league mailing list yahoo groups.com location. This should be fairly normal since we've been doing it all year. 2. Place the unzipped league files in your SOMH/DATA directory. 3. Start your SOMH game and create your manager, but there are some additonal guidelines you'll need to follow. 3a. Overtime in the playoffs is 5 on 5, not 4 on 4. 3b. Line combinations follow 3rd period rules, this means you may double shift ONE forward. 3c. Defensemen double shifting in overtime uses the same defenseman for each overtime period. Unrealistic, but it's all we can to do. 4. Player usage is more limited in the playoffs than the regular season. 4a. Goalies are limited in games per series to their fatigue rating. 4b. A goalie must have started in 10 WSHL games during the regular season. 4c. Forwards and defensemen are limited to play in a number of games equal to their NHL games divided by 10, rounding up all fractions. Any forward or defenseman with 60+ games may play any number of games. 4d. Check your regular season over-usage. Players who were played beyond their NHL games played, may be suspended for 1-3 games, based on the number or games they were over-extended. Players with 70 or more NHL games played are excused from this rule. 5. Play each game individually, importing the road exports to keep the statistics as accurate as possible. This also means that you should allow the road team to send a new manager after each game is played, i.e. after playing game one, ask if your opponent wants to send a new manager for game two. 6. Importing game results requires that you download the export file that is sent with the box score. Put it in your SOMH/IMPORT folder. Start the SOMH game if it isn't already running. Select the playoff for the league and then pull the STATISTICS menu down. Choose the IMPORT GAME RESULTS option. A box will appear with the exported game results in the small window. Check the game and hit the IMPORT button. The game should inform you that 1 game has been successfully imported. Then you can go play your next game after loading the new road manager. A: Yes, the commissioner has set a deadline of two days per game. This means that each series has a maximum of two weeks to play their games.
