Download the playoff game files once Mike has posted them. They'll be located in their proper league mailing list yahoo groups.com location. This should be fairly normal since we've been doing it all year. 2. Place the unzipped league files in your SOMH/DATA directory. 3. Start your SOMH game and create your manager, but there are some additonal guidelines you'll need to follow. 3a. Overtime in the playoffs is 5 on 5, not 4 on 4. 3b. Line combinations follow 3rd period rules, this means you may double shift ONE forward. 3c. Defensemen double shifting in overtime uses the same defenseman for each overtime period. Unrealistic, but it's all we can to do. 4. Player usage is more limited in the playoffs than the regular season. 4a. Goalies are limited in games per series to their fatigue rating. 4b. A goalie must have started in 10 WSHL games during the regular season. 4c. Forwards and defensemen are limited to play in a number of games equal to their NHL games divided by 10, rounding up all fractions. Any forward or defenseman with 60+ games may play any number of games. 4d. Check your regular season over-usage. Players who were played beyond their NHL games played, may be suspended for 1-3 games, based on the number or games they were over-extended. Players with 70 or more NHL games played are excused from this rule. 5. Play each game individually, importing the road exports to keep the statistics as accurate as possible. This also means that you should allow the road team to send a new manager after each game is played, i.e. after playing game one, ask if your opponent wants to send a new manager for game two. 6. Importing game results requires that you download the export file that is sent with the box score. Put it in your SOMH/IMPORT folder. Start the SOMH game if it isn't already running. Select the playoff for the league and then pull the STATISTICS menu down. Choose the IMPORT GAME RESULTS option. A box will appear with the exported game results in the small window. Check the game and hit the IMPORT button. The game should inform you that 1 game has been successfully imported. Then you can go play your next game after loading the new road manager. Playoff Suspensions I don't have the World League data, so I couldn't figure out suspensions or goaltender eligibility. The North American League informaion is correct. Cristobal Huet (BWK) - 6 starts Corey Schwab (IOW) - 9 starts Andrew Raycroft (KKK) - 2 starts Mathieu Garon (LAB) - 9 starts Martin Biron (SAR) - 0 starts ************************************************************************** Week Fifteen/Sixteen Review Lots of re-positioning in the World League as Ibiza and Kodiak are the only two teams to remain in the same position as the previous bi-week. After trading over half their roster, the Aberdeen Flying Scotsmen have finally come together, but they fall a few points short of claiming guarenteed home ice. The Monarch Lions locked up home ice and the number one seed. Ottawa and Floral Park switched places, but does playing as the number three or four in the East make any difference? Last season's champions, Campbell River takes the number one seed in the West. This will be the second season in a row for the Canucks and Lions as the number one teams going into the playoffs. The Hibbing Stink Badgers were unfortunate in losing the first tie-breaker with Campbell River. The second tie-breaker, total wins went in Campbell River's favor. Ibizia fails to make the playoffs after going in last year as the number three seed in the West. Over in the North American League, Red Deer is the story, coming out from fourth place to grab the number two seed away from Saratoga who dropped from first to third. Iowa ends up with home ice through the playoffs, unless they meet Labrador or Alaska or Inside in the finals. There was no movement in the East, Labrador kept the number seed, with Alaska, Inside and Kent Kounty falling in line. Wellington stood a good chance at the beginning of the week, but they fall one point shy of ousting the Killer Kittens. ************************************************************************** Expansion Woes? The first and second second seasons for the WSHL are now in the books. But have the questions brought answers? Was expansion a good thing? Judging by their records, the two new teams to the World League may have a large portion of the mountain to climb if they're to reach the playoffs. They both finished last in their respective divisions, but there are some good signs. The Barbary Coast Whalers were 52 points out of the playoffs and only scored 164 goals, 60 fewer goals than the Peoria Rivermen who finished one place ahead of them. But they did manage to hold off opponent's scoring better than a handful of other teams. With the play of Aebischer, their future in net seems to be solid for next season. With the personel around him, the Whalers strategy seems sound, defense first. In time, their offense will go up since it doesn't appear that it can go any lower. The Dakota Mustangs fared a little better than the Whalers, but they also finished last in their division. Playing a more open style of hockey gave the Mustangs more goals, both for and against. But they have some solid players in which to build around, just like their expansion brother. Their major concern will be defense since they posted the highest goals against in the World League. Currently they have a mix of offensive and defenseive players, but the team itself seems to be struggling with its own identity. If there's a comparision team, it's the North American League's Calgary Grizzlies and Seattle Tsunami. ************************************************************************** Playoff Match-ups! North American League Eastern Conference #1 Labrador Moose Vs. #4 Kent Kounty Killer Kittens Season Series: Labrador leads series, 7-1-0 Prediction: Labrador wins the series, 4 games to 1. This series should be a slam dunk for the Moose, but with their four suspensions, they may drop the first game. Not in their first game line- up are Mario Lemieux, Mike Peca, and their two best goaltenders, Mathieu Garon and Marty Turco. But standing 35 points above the Killer Kittens, Labrador is still the odds on favorite to win the series. Still the Cats have some teeth as they're 4th in goal scoring among playoff bound teams. It's their defense that's lacking, having given up close to 100 more goals than their first round opponent. Garth Snow will have to look extremely sharp if they have any chance at winning this series. #2 Alaska Aces Vs. #3 Inside Shots Season Series: Series tied, 3-3-2 Prediction: Inside wins the series, 4 games to 3. Only three points separated the second and third round seeds in the East. This series should go the distance as each team is well balanced, but the Shots have the edge with two 40 goal scorers. If Naslund and Heatley can produce split chances, Fernandez's 82% goalie rating save percentage will not keep Alaska in the game. The one thing going in Alaska's favor are the three suspensions to Inside players, Deadmarsh, Daze and Bierk will all miss the first game. If the Aces can keep the scores low, they stand a chance, but that's easier said than done. Western Conference #1 Iowa Wolves Vs. #4 Brandon Wheat Kings Season Series: Iowa leads series, 4-3-1 Prediction: Iowa wins the series, 4 games to 2. Brandon is the hottest team entering the playoffs. They won eight of their last ten games. The only troubling loss was to their playoff opponent, Iowa. The Wheat Kings self-destructed in a 5-1 home loss to the Wolves. The difference maker was Roman Cechmanek, who the Kings will see in every game of this series. He was a perfect 11/11 on goalie ratings he faced in the final regular season meeting. If he falters, Iowa will have to rely on Robert Esche as Corey Schwab is ineligible. The key to the series, Glen Murray vs. Roman Cechmanek. Murray lead the league in goals, scoring 75 times! Being locked at right wing will allow Iowa to match their best left wing against Murray, but the Wolves are a bit thin defensively at that position. This is the reason Roman Cechmanek must bring his "A" game. #2 Red Deer Avros Vs. #3 Saratoga Sting Season Series: Saratoga leads series, 3-2-3 Prediction: Red Deer wins series 4 games to 2. Red Deer might be the second hottest team going into the post-season behind Brandon. The Avros were just a month ago out of the playoffs. Hard work and last minute deals gave them the push they needed to make the leap to second place. It'll be a tough decision for Jason, to start Sebastien Caron over Giguere? Caron's played only a third of the games Giguere has, but the back-up has posted better numbers, lower goals against and higher save percentage. Mason doesn't have nearly a big a problem, as the Sting will ride the back of Sean Burke for as long as they can. But the focus of their attack rests on how Mats Sundin plays against John Madden and Wes Walz. Red Deer's defensive strength at center might be the best in the North American League. ************************************************************************** Draft Lottery Expect to see during the off-season or during the playoffs, the lottery for non-playoff teams. Scott Shigemi is working on a program that will simulate 1,000 lottery balls. The lottery will be weighted to favor the last place team with 322 balls. The next to the last team will have 231 balls, followed by 168, 124, 90, and 65 for the 9th place team. The code for the program will submitted for all to see and the program will be run over the net so everyone can witness the lottery. If anyone has questions, comments, or suggestions, feel free to post them. ************************************************************************** Game Usage Reminder With the season going into the second half, here's fair warning about player usage. Taken from the Constitution: * - Any player that has played 70 or more NHL games is unlimited in the regular season. * - Any player that has played 69 games or less NHL games is limited to their actual number of games played in the regular season. * - Goalies are limited in games to their actual number of completed NHL games played in the regular season. What happens if you over use a player? Taken from the Constitution: * - Any team that has extended a player beyond league rules in the regular season or playoffs will be subject to the following penalties. 1-3 games over usage; player is suspended for 1-3 playoff games. Over 3 games the player is lost immediately to free agency and available in the next draft. Double check your games played before sending out your block 7 manager! I'm sure you'd kick yourself if you ended up losing Yzerman or Pronger. Don't forget that goaltenders are limited to their actual games played. If you have the "Pull if Fatigued" turned on, make sure your back-up goalie has enough games played to cover the substitution. ************************************************************************** TRADER DAN'S NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW By Dan Irvine Well, it has been a great season! Lots of deals being made, lots of interest and now the playoffs are about to begin. YES! It is time to look back on my pre-season team rankings to see how they turned out. I have attached the spreadsheet but here are a few comments. My rankings of the top 3 teams were correct as the top 3 teams I predicted to be there finished in the top 3. I was right on for Hartford, Wellington & West Coast. And as mentioned in my pre-season rankings the middle 6 teams were very close and they finished that way. The only 2 teams that I was off on were Calgary & Red Deer and it just so happens that these 2 teams made a number of trades with each other, Coincidence???? Anyways, your comments are always appreciated. My Playoff predictions and teams rankings for both leagues will be out in the next day or so. Best of luck to all. Trader Dan 2003-2004 WSHL North American League Final by Dan Irvine TEAM STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES RANK OUTLOOK Final Ranking TEAM - Alaska STRENGTHS - Good team defence with depth especially at center and a solid rotation of defencemen anchored by Lidstrom, Aucoin & up and comer Havelid. Solid goaltending in Roloson. WEAKNESSES - Only weakness appears to be lack of natural goal scorers with no one having more than 10 chances. RANK - 1 OUTLOOK - As long as this team can get its share of goals they will go a long way. FINAL RANKING - 2 TEAM - Inside Shots STRENGTHS - Have a number of star players most notably Naslund, Heatley & Afredsson. Good defence down the middle with a strong core of defencemen lead by big bruiser Chara. One of the top goaltenders in Roy. WEAKNESSES - Team scoring depth on 3rd & 4th lines may cause some problem as there will be a lot of pressure on Naslund & Heatley to score. RANK - 2 OUTLOOK - If this team gets balanced scoring they may be the team to beat. FINAL RANKING - 3 TEAM - Labrador STRENGTHS - Powerful offence led by Super Mario, Jagr, Palffy & Kovalev. Top goaltender in Turco. WEAKNESSES - Defence & intimidation amongst forwards may be an issue. If Turco plays well it may not matter. RANK - 3 OUTLOOK - If their defencemen hold up well and they have the anticipated goal scoring success the Cup may not be far away. FINAL RANKING - 1 TEAM - Brandon STRENGTHS - Have some natural goal scorers in Murray, Hull & Bondra and depth at center. Strong defencemen core lead by allstar Blake as well as S Niedermayer & Tarnstrom. Solid power play. WEAKNESSES - Goaltending is the main weakness and lack of intimidating forces at forward. RANK - 4 OUTLOOK - Team has a good mixture of scorers & defence, if the goaltending holds up this team will be a force. FINAL RANKING - 7 TEAM - Kent Kounty STRENGTHS - Lots of scoring depth on the forward lines 1 thru 3 with good power play numbers. WEAKNESSES - Team doesn't have a strong presence on the blueline to put fear in opponents. Goaltending might be an issue with Garth Snow in net. RANK - 5 OUTLOOK - This team is loaded with scoring especially on PP, if they can keep puck out of their net they will be tough. FINAL RANKING - 8 TEAM - Calgary STRENGTHS - Top line of Forsberg, Fedorov & Satan will be a force. Solid defencemen core and great goaltending in Belfour. WEAKNESSES - Forward depth behind the big line may be a problem. It will depend on how much input part time players such as Bure & Deadmarsh have. RANK - 6 OUTLOOK - If Deadmarsh & Bure have any kind of substantial impact this will be one of the teams to beat. FINAL RANKING - 10 TEAM - Saratoga STRENGTHS - Team defence is good with strong presence down the middle in Sundin, Sackic & Linden. Redden & Zubov are 2 big stars on the blueline. WEAKNESSES - Goaltending may be the teams only weakness with the starter Thibault carrying the load. RANK - 7 OUTLOOK - Goaltending needs to be strong and this team could go far. FINAL RANKING - 6 TEAM - Iowa STRENGTHS - Two great young stars in Jokinen & Hejduk. Defence lead by 2 big intimdators in Stevens & Foote as well strong power play numbers. Good goaltending with Cechmanek. WEAKNESSES - Lack of defence among forwards might cause headaches for Cechmanek but if the power play produces it may not matter. A lot of pressure on youngsters Hejduk & Jokinen to carry team. RANK - 8 OUTLOOK - If Jokinen & Hejduk produce well, this team will cause a lot of problems for others. FINAL RANKING - 4 TEAM - Wellington STRENGTHS - Top 3 defencemen among the best in MacInnis, Johnsson & Morris. Team defence & intimidation is also one of the best. WEAKNESSES - Lack of offence will be biggest hurdle for this team. Denis & Kolzig need to play a big role as this team will be in many low scoring battles. RANK - 9 OUTLOOK - Defence certainly not a problem on this team, if they can score some timely goals this team will be in every game. FINAL RANKING - 9 TEAM - Seattle STRENGTHS - Teams main goal scoring to come from Hossa & Thachuk. Great young backstop in Luongo. Hatcher will be an intimidating force on blueline. WEAKNESSES - Lack of defence among forwards could casue havoc for young Luongo. Will need to have special teams perfoming well. RANK - 10 OUTLOOK - If the power play is strong and Luongo plays well they will have a chance. FINAL RANKING - 12 TEAM - West Coast STRENGTHS - Thornton will be the teams leader with a good supporting cast of young talent like, Prospal, Drury, Carter, Tanguay as well as Kariya. Two good young defencemen in Jovanovski & Kaberle. WEAKNESSES - Team defence and intimidation may hurt them, as well as lack of goal scoring outside of Thornton. Lalime will have to come up big. RANK - 11 OUTLOOK - Thornton will need to carry this team on his back to go far. Lalime will need stellar effort. FINAL RANKING - 11 TEAM - Kentucky STRENGTHS - Strong down the middle with Rucchin, Roenick, Nedved & Cassels. Scoring lead by Bertuzzi & Kovalchuk. WEAKNESSES - Biggest weakness appears to be lack of impact players on the blueline. RANK - 12 OUTLOOK - Keeping the puck out of their own end will be the biggest concern. FINAL RANKING - 13 TEAM - Red Deer STRENGTHS - A number of good young stars in Iginla, Zetterberg & Madden. One of the best young goaltenders in Giguere. WEAKNESSES - Lack of team offence especially on the power play will put enormous pressure on Iginla to lead team. Giguere will have to be at his best. RANK - 13 OUTLOOK - A lot of pressure, maybe too much on the younger players on this team. Have to wait and see if they can handle it. FINAL RANKING - 5 TEAM - Hartford STRENGTHS - Lots of youthful exuberence. WEAKNESSES - This team is the youngest team in the league with the least experience. May be a force in the future but not this year. RANK - 14 OUTLOOK - This team is certainly built for the future and should be a strong force in the years to come. FINAL RANKING - 14 ************************************************************************** TRADER DAN'S NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS BRING IT ON!!! Hopefully all the playoff teams are saying that. Should be a great playoff as we have some great matchups in round 1. I have attached the NAL playoff preview note that "then opinions expressed are not those of the league and are based on an independent view". Dan NAL 2003-2004 Playoff Preview Matchups - Labrador vs Kent Kounty Comments - Kent Kounty certainly has a big task before them as they take on the WSHL's top team. Labrador only lost 6 home games all season which does not bode well for Kent Kounty. They will have to find a way to contain Palffy, Lemieux, Kovalev etc. On the plus side Kent Kounty can counter the Labrador attack with some snipers of their own in Shanahan, St Louis, Demitra and Lecavalier. Look for some high scoring games in this series with Labrador's depth being the difference. Prediction - Labrador in 5 Matchups - Alaska vs Inside Shots Comments - This is a classic matchup, offence versus defence with 2 very evenly matched teams going at it. Alaska has a lot of team defence and play the trap very well, where Inside Shots are a free flowing team that like to create a lot of scoring chances. Key matchups will be Lethinen against Naslund and Belfour against Roloson. Both teams have brusiers on defence in Chara & Hatcher. This series figures to be a hard fought battle which should go to game seven. Prediction - Inside Shots in 7 Matchups - Iowa vs Brandon Comments - This is another great matchup with the Western top team in Iowa versus a Brandon team that has been on fire the last 2 blocks of the season. The biggest task for Iowa will be finding a way to slow down Glen Murray as he scores a large percentage of Brandon's goals. Brandon on the other hand will have to contain Iowa's bigtime duo of Jokinen & Hejduk. Key matchup may turn out to be Maltby against Hejduk? A big advantage in this series may be the goaltending as Iowa has better ranked goaltenders. Should be another close series which could go either way. Prediction - Iowa in 7 Matchups - Red Deer vs Saratoga Comments - Once again another great matchup with great individual matchups shaping up. Red Deer with have to stop the dynamic duo of Sundin and Sackic, but Madden & Walz just might be up to the task. On Saratoga end they will have to contain Jagr & Iginla which may be a task for the likes of Cooke, Doan or Elias. The goaltending advantage goes to Red Deer with Giguere with the overall team balance advantage going to Saratoga. Saratoga is also coached by last years WL Champion team CRC which may just be the edge needed to win this series. Prediction - Saratoga in 7 ************************************************************************** TRADER DAN'S WORLD LEAGUE PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS Hello All Welcome to the playoff wars, may the last team standing win. It is time for the now annual playoff preview. Will CRC repeat? Will there be any upsets? Classic battles? Can't wait to find out more??? Attached is this years Playoff Preview. Dan WL 2003-2004 Playoff Preview Matchups: Monarch vs Floral Park Comments: This is a great matchup in that both teams rely on their right wing snipers to perform. Monarch with Palffy, Iginla & Hull and Floral Park with Bertuzzi, Heatley & St Louis. Monarch also has Sundin which is a big advantage. This series may come down to the team and can contain the other teams right wingers the best. So which team has the best left wingers to do that? Seems to be pretty evenly matched on left wing. It may come down to how effectively Floral Parks centers can contain Sundin, Marchant & Scatchard have a big task ahead of them. If Floral Park has one advantage it would be in net with Roloson over Kolzig. Monarch also has the playoff experience gained by going to the final last year. Prediction: Monarch in 6 Matchups: Aberdeen vs Ottawa Comments: This is your classic offensive show between 2 teams with their share of snipers. Look for a lot of high scoring games. The difference in this series may be the overall team defence on Ottawa which boasts probably the best core of defencemen in the league. An area of concern for Aberdeen is how much of an affect their part time players such as LeClair, Deadmarsh & Bure have. Goaltending is a draw here. Ottawa has an outstanding win\loss record since being taken over by Steve Izumi. Prediction: Ottawa in 6 Matchups: Campbell River vs Ibiza Comments: CRC starts their long road to defending their title against Ibiza. On paper CRC is a much more balanced team with more depth than Ibiza. BUT as we have seen all season Naslund can win games on his own. CRC's big task will be to contain Naslund, will LInden be up to the task? Ibiza will have to deal with Sackic and Super Mario, will Handzus be able to contain Sackic??? CRC has a big advantage on their blueline with Blake, Lidstrom & Jovanovski taking control bac there. They also have one of the best young goaltenders in the game in Luongo. Look for these advantages as well as experience being the deciding factor with Naslund possibly stealing a game on his own. Prediction: CRC in 5 Matchups: Hibbing vs Kodiak Comments: This is a repeat of last seasons quarter final matchup which went to 7 games. The difference this time around might be that Kodiak has a little more offensive power this time around with Fedorov, Hossa and Jagr. Hibbing will have to be on their toes to stop all 3 of them. Hibbing on the other hand relies an awlful lot on Thornton to carry their team which may be difficult to do in a long series. Could we see a classic clash of youth against veteran savvy? Thornton versus Messier? Brindamour versus Fedorov? Goaltending seems to be an even match between the 2 teams with Kodiak possibly having a sleeper in Bierk for a few games. Should be a very entertaining series. Prediction: Kodiak in 6 ************************************************************************** Important Dates April 1st - Playoffs begin as soon as the playoff files are posted. ************************************************************************** Home and Road records may not match since I do not have accurate information. The goals for/against should be correct as I removed the goals scored in the two canceled games.
