I think I have them all, but please double check. The trade deadline has come and gone, but the biggest news comes from our commissioner. Mike Webb announced that he might be stepping down. He asks that those interested in the job apply to him. Choosing his succes- sor won't be as easy as raising your hand and taking the job, careful consideration will be applied to all applicants before Mike makes a decision. See below for more about this important issue. The Trade Deadline...Mike has extended it twice now. You have until today to finish any trades or free agent movement. With the additional week, there weren't as many moves as the previous bi-week with one possible exception, the Aberdeen Flying Scotsmen. In an effort to separate them- selves from the competition, the Scotsmen made five different trades that included a total of 29 players and picks. They turned half of their roster over despite being in first place. Things were much more quiet in the North American League. Trader Dan and his Labrador Moose only made a ripple with their two deals. Despite the two trades, they were over-shadowed by a Calgary-Inside blockbuster. Top defensive forward Daniel Alfredsson was moved with Roman Hamrlik and Alexander Mogilny to Calgary by the Shots. In return for the defensive push, Inside got back Peter Forsberg and John LeClair. Forsberg was with Inside just a month ago. "It isn't a pleasant feeling to be traded back and forth," said Forsberg. "Fortunately I never got around to selling my house, so I look at this experience as a long vacation. At least I now know that I'm not going any where else." With the rosters finalized, all the playoff hopefuls are setting their sights for post season play. Teams that are currently penciled in their playoff bearths can't be lax, especially in the North American League West. The Sting and Wolves may hold a comfortable double digit lead over the 4th seed, the final two spots are in the tightest of races. Three points separate the 3rd seed from the last place team. Of the teams looking in, all three of them are tied at 60 points, just two points shy of the 4th seed. The playoff seeding may not be finished until the last game is played. Taken from the Constitution: * - Any player that has played 70 or more NHL games is unlimited in the regular season. * - Any player that has played 69 games or less NHL games is limited to their actual number of games played in the regular season. * - Goalies are limited in games to their actual number of completed NHL games played in the regular season. What happens if you over use a player? Taken from the Constitution: * - Any team that has extended a player beyond league rules in the regular season or playoffs will be subject to the following penalties. 1-3 games over usage; player is suspended for 1-3 playoff games. Over 3 games the player is lost immediately to free agency and available in the next draft. Double check your games played before sending out your block 7 manager! I'm sure you'd kick yourself if you ended up losing Yzerman or Pronger. Don't forget that goaltenders are limited to their actual games played. The only negative aspect of this article is my disappointment that Mike Webb is searching for his replacement. In talking with the commissioner of my other league, I've begun to realize the scope of what the commissioner for a great fantasy hockey league must deal with week in and week out. Now I know that we're not working on the constitution right now, but I'd like to bat some ideas around for the up- coming off-season. 1. Split the Commissioner's office into smaller parts. By this I think we might have one commissioner for each league, North American and World League. They would work together on the global issues like the constitution and schedule, but individually they would run each league separately. For example, when dealing with the draft, each commissioner would be responsible for just one draft. This might be difficult because there are owners in both leagues, but the work load for the commissioners would be better spaced out. 2. See if there are any volunteers other than the commissioner who will take on the responsibility for posting and maintaining the main league file. I'm sure that this takes up a lot of time for Mike, I know it did for me when I posted the World League's All-Star Game files, and that was for just two teams and one game. 3. More delegation! Now I'm volunteering to post the newsletter for the league, but imagine if Mike had to do all of this himself in addition to the other tasks he has (my commissioner in my other league does nearly everything but post the league files). By delegating tasks, there's less chance for burn-out. 4. Create volunteer committees for certain tasks. Taking another page out of my other league's constitution, we might use two committees, one that works on the constitution, edits, proofs, posts, and handles the submissions and ballot. The other board is for the review of league matters such as protests, for games or trades. If someone believes that a trade is unbalanced, they'd make a proposal to overturn the deal. He'd present his case, allow the teams involved to defend the trade and then the board members would vote on the matter after discussing it amongst themselves. 5. Is there someone else that would want to host and/or edit the league web site? This would be another time saving device for the commissioner. So there you have it, some simple brainstorming to help alleviate burn-out by the commissioner. For those who don't know what it's like to run a league or in Mike's case, two leagues, maybe you should try it out for a week to see how difficult it is.
