There was more movement in the North American League as teams are pushing for playoff position. That's not to say that the World League teams were idle, but for the volume of trades, this bi-week has been the busiest this year. In looking back, the Monarch Lions may have come close to setting a record for trades in the World League. Are the Lions cleaning their den? Some big names were associated with the Lions this week. Among them were Patrick Roy, Doug Weight, Joe Thornton, Roman Hamrlik, Mike Modano and Olaf Kolzig. Roy and Weight bring Thornton and Jocelyn Thibault to the Lions. Derek Morris was required to bring Hamrlik into the den. And the cost for Olli the Goalie and Modano, Jeff Halpern and a pair of draft picks. In Alberta, Calgary and Red Deer were possibly even more busy on the line as they both record four trades, two of them with each other. Red Deer re-acquired their traded pick from Calgary for Roman Hamrlik (hey, is there something wrong with Hamrlik? He was traded in both leagues!) and Eric Desjardins. Free to deal another pick away, Red Deer wasted no time and sent their number one pick to the West Coast Express for Paul Kariya. Top pick Al MacInnis was on the move from Wellington, going to Iowa for Bryan McCabe and a draft pick. Doug Weight who was traded in the World League, was also traded in the NAL. This time he goes from West Coast to the Inside Shots for Mattias Ohlund and a number one pick. In trading for the now, the Labrador Moose send Craig Conroy, Mariusz Czerkawski, Kim Jonsson, and Robert Lang to the Kentucky Ice Tigers for Keith Carney, Petr Nedved, and Steve Rucchin. For defensive overkill, they also acquire Keith Primeau and Mike Rathje from Calgary for Alexander Mogilny and Brian Berard. Will these trades be an appetizer for the WSHL? With three teams tied for the fourth playoff spot in the NAL West, it's assured that dealing will continue into next week. The Inside Shots have placed Zdeno Chara on the trading block. Red Deer isn't done, they're offering Paul Mara and Marek Malik who should have better cards next year for some defensive help this year. ************************************************************************** ALL STAR RESULTS Sadly, not everyone voted. In fact just less than half of the league's members submitted votes. And as promised, I'll be giving everyone IP for it. There were two ties, WL Howe division, right defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Al MacInnis will both be listed as starters and make the team. The other tie was at goaltender for the NAL's Sittler division. Ed Belfour and Marty Turco will share time in net for the all-star game. How's this for strange, the Campbell River Canucks will start for the Maniago division. It kind of begs the question, should we have the preceeding year's cup winner play against the all-stars submitted from the rest of the league? "Yeah, this season has definately been a learning experience. I thought our record would be better than whatit is," says rookie coach and GM Mike Yancharas, "You look at this roster and it doens't make sense. Over in the NAL my twin brother has been outplaying us since he decided to tear up his team and he doesn't have the roster we do. I'm learning but I never thought this. Maybe it's time for a change." Maybe it is time for a change. The problem seems to be that everyone is calling about the young players, the ones that a team, even in rebuilding mode should keep; Jokkinen, Turco, Gaborik, Zetterberg are some of the names that have been mentioned in talks. "The problem is, we're not interested in moving any of those players. Will we move them, yes. Will other teams overpay to get them, yes. I'll move anybody, but it has to be for the right price and so far no team has been willing to pay that price, which I understand is high." So the bottom line, don't look for many trades from Saginaw. Or if there is a trade, look for it to be a big blockbuster deal involving many young players. As Mike puts it "I'm looking for young superstars, but then again aren't we all?" ************************************************************************** 3-Way Tie in the West by Jason McCorrister Things are really heating up for the final stretch in the Western Conference. It's a three-way tie for the last playoff spot with the West Coast Express, Seattle Tsunami, and Red Deer Avros finishing block five with 49 points. Of course, we can't count out the last place Brandon Wheat Kings who are just two points back with 47! What a fantastic way to end the first season in the NAL. With the trade deadline looming, watch for even more big names to be traded as these four teams try to gain an advantage as the season comes to a close. Good luck to all! Play fair and have fun! ************************************************************************** Kentucky Releases Houlder by David Ramey The Kentucky Ice Tigers announced Saturday the release of defenseman Bill Houlder and forward Adam Hall to get under the NAL roster limit of 27. "We mistakenly thought due to the Canadian to Kentucky exchange rates, we were entitled to two more players. However, any glance at the standings indicates we obviously have no clue to what we are doing," Ice Tiger general manager David Ramey said. Ramey said the Tigers are not through dealing and may be more active the closer it comes to the trading deadline. "We're going to take one more look at things before entering the final quarter of the season," Ramey said.
