It seems that we've mostly made it through the holiday season intact. There were a few bumps because of time taken off for vacations, personal matters, and travel, but for every bump we face now, is one less we should feel in the following years. Don't be surprised to see a proposal for a tri-week in the schedule for next year! A lot of movement in both leagues, and I'm not just talking about trades! There were some big names changing teams, but more importantly, the standings have become a mess. The biggest move was the Labrador Moose jumping from a 4th seed to number one in the Maniago Division. Alaska bolstered by the addition of Darien Hatcher couldn't hold the top spot for very long. Other happeningins in the division see the bubble teams losing ground. The Kentucky Ice Tigers and may have joined the woeful Hartford Whalers in looking to next season as they continue to fall in the standings. The same isn't holding true in the Orr Division. The bottom three teams are all still within easy striking distance of the fourth seed. Just three points separate the bottom four teams and that final berth. In fact, the West Coast Express steamrolled up to the fourth seed after beginning the bi-week in last place! What about those player moves? Calgary and Inside completed a blockbuster deal that sent Eric Belanger, Ed Belfour, Adam Deadmarsh, Peter Forsberg, Mattias Ohlund, and Miroslav Satan to the Inside Shots for Daniel Alfredsson, Murray Baron, Andreas Johansson, David Legwand, Brendan Morrison, and Patrick Roy. Despite the big names, this deal is filled with risk. Attached to the likes of Forsberg and Roy are the looming questions about their playing futures. Ed Belfour is a popluar player amongst moving companies. In the World League his rights were delt between Saskatoon and Aberdeen. Those Flying Scotsmen love the Eagle. They traded Mariusz Czerkawski, Nathan Dempsey, Nikolai Khabibulin, Robert Lang, and a draft pick (ABE04#2) to Saskatoon for Ed Belfour, Kieth Carney, Kip Miller, and Steve Rucchin. Is it move for the future or one that will keep them high amongst the playoff bound teams? Only time can tell. ************************************************************************** ALL STAR BALLOTS! Saddly not everybody submitted nominations from their teams. But that won't stop this from going forward. There are two lists, broken down for each league, North Amerian and World Leagues. Each league is divided by division and player position. Vote for one player at each position, and division. If you'd like to write in your own choice, that too will be accepted. Send me your ballot and at the deadline (January 23rd) I'll post the results. To help you make your decisions, I've included some information about each of the nominated players. press conference today, announcing a blockbuster trade for his struggling squad. The Blades have traded Steve Rucchin, Kelly Miller, Keith Carney and Ed Belfour to the Aberdeen Scotsman, in return for Robert Lang, Marius Czerkawski, Nathan Dempsey, Nicky Khabibulin and a 2nd round draft pick in next year's entry draft. "It's clear that this team needed to prepare for the future; we needed to rebuild", explained a visibly pleased Pilot. "The current roster hasn't performed as we wanted, so it was time to change up the mix. I come from the old school: whoever gets the best player, wins a deal. And Robert Lang is easily the best player in this deal. Add to that the 'bulin wall, and I'm confident we'll have the necessary pieces for a solid increase in performance". Pilot was also pleased with the draft pick - "there have been a lot of good players available in this league in the second round, and our scouts are already planning who to look at". Asked how he felt about the players leaving the club, Pilot became reflective. "Steve Rucchin has been the heart and soul of this team all year - it broke my heart to trade him, but Steve asked to be playing for a team that could win it all. I think I've done that, without hurting our club. Keith Carney came in here and filled some pretty big skates [Adam Foote]. This was just about making the deal work. Eddie improved our goaltending, no question, but he was going to be the center of any deal we made. He can be the difference for a team in the play-offs". Asked if he was done dealing, Pilot hedged. "Who knows? It depends on the deals that come forward. I think we all know by now that there are no untouchables. Still, I wouldn't mind starting next year with a healthy Nolan, Guerin, Lang, Peca, Czerkawski and Knuble. I think we're building a future on this team". ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE RANKINGS by Dan Irvine Current TEAM Ranking Comments Labrador 1 Big second block puts them in first place Alaska 2 Drop to second this week but still a very tough opponent for all Iowa 3 Continue to win more than their share of games and stay on top in the West Inside 4 Blockbuster deal immediately improves this team who appear to be back on track and one of the teams to beat Wellington 5 Rumours have team looking to next year, anticipate some big deals in the near future Saratoga 6 Sundin still scoring at remarkable pace and leading this team Calgary 7 Part of the blockbuster with Inside Shots in a deal that may or may not help them this year Red Deer 8 Goaltending still outstanding aand the pickup of Kariya sure to help them Brandon 9 Goaltending continure to be a problem but with some deals this team can be a contender Kent Kounty 10 Despite writing off this season team remains competitive Kentucky 11 Young team that should be better next year Seattle 12 Playing better of late, need to make some deals to improve West Coast 13 Thornton still the heart of this team. Hartford 14 Again next year beckons ************************************************************************** Soapbox Talk by Scott Shigemi Okay, I'm beginning to get the hint, there are some owners who don't care for the extra things that could make this league very special. Now being a first year owner in what is really a second year league, my words might not carry the weight of someone that was here from the beginning, but if the league has these uncaring owners, is that "good" for the league? Seriously, how hard was it to weed your rosters for a few players that stand out? If you're among the group of owners who don't want to take the extra step to solidify the league, ask yourself, "Why am I being so negative?" From personal experience, I've learned that by investing a little extra time into such a community like this one, you can add depth and provide even more enjoyment for yourself. Maybe it's because I joined a different Strat-o-matic league that has a lot of caring owners, or because I love statistics. The bottom line is that I truly wish that everyone could enjoy this game as much as I do (well, not when I lose =). So, if you don't care about things like the all-stars, or the post season awards, just drop me a note and I'll make sure that I don't bug you with it. This way I won't be wasting your time, and you won't be wasting mine when I put effort into the league. The negative responses kill all my enthusiasm for the game and league. I'd rather just ignore your comments and keep my spirits up. Download the league file 1a. World League - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLWL/files 1b. North American League - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLNAL/files 1c. Use your e-mail, Mike sends them to the league mailing lists. 2. Unzip the files into your SOMH/DATA folder, overwriting if necessary. Make sure that SOMH is not running. 3. Start SOMH 4. Create a computer manager and export it. 5. Send your unzipped road manager to Mike and/or your league 6. Wait for Mike to release an updated league zip with the bi-week's road managers. 7. Play your home games. 11. Save your home boxscores and export files. 12. Send your unzipped home boxscores and export files to your league mailing list. Do not send them to the general list!
