American: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLNAL ************************************************************************** Week Five/Six Review As the holidays approach, the Alaska Aces find themselves gifted with good fortune as they land Darien Hatcher from the Seattle Tsunami along with first place overall in the North American League. If they continue to go 8-2-2-0 each bi-week, they are bound to secure home ice for the playoffs. Jogging behind the Aces is the rest of the dog pack, with just seven points separating five teams. In the Western Conference, things may be even closer as no team is "officially" out of reach of cracking the top four. The fact of the matter is that the last place West Coast Express is just one point out of being the 5th place team, or four points away from being in the playoffs. And while Alaska might have the scariest defense in the league on paper, they do not hold the distinction of having the lowest goals against. That honor belongs to the Red Deer Avros, who's stingy defense has only allowed 71 goals agaisnt. Their defense is the biggest factor in their holding of the final playoff spot since their offensive production ranks them in next to last place, 21 goals ahead of the youthful Hartford Whaler franchise. The hockey fans in Alberta are going Giggy because of J.S. Giguere's performance and that the Calgary Grizzlies are both poised to play in the post season. As for what's happening in the World League, I haven't a clue. The holidays suck up all my extra time that I would normally use to look. And with nobody stepping up to the plate, the World League loses out on any news, which is a pity since they're the original WSHL league. =( ************************************************************************** ALL STAR BALLOTS! The season is nearly half finished as teams skate into the fourth bi-week. What does this mean? Simply put, it's time to have a real All-Star game for each league. It also means that each team owner will have to put in just a little extra effort over the holidays. What do you need to do? This is fairly easy, nominate one player from your team at each position: Left Wing, Center, Right Wing, Left Defense, Right Defense, and Goaltender. If you need to see how well your players have performed, you have the Strat-o-matic game to help you out since it tracks your players' stats. Just send me your list of players and I'll put the ballot together. Or if you want, feel free to post them to the general mailing list. After the new year, the lists will be sent out for the league members to vote on. Here's an example of nominations, took me less than 5 minutes to put together. I'm assigning IP for those who do not submit a list. ************************************************************************** Aces with a New Ace Up Their Sleave by Mike Lilja The Alaska Aces are happy to annouce the aquisistion of LD Darian Hatcher, The Aces send their #1 pick in next seasons draft and RD Jason Smith to Seattle. This trade takes effect for block 4. Says GM/Coach Mike Lilja, "We are extremely delighted to bring Darian on board he will bring his muscle and hustle to give us perhaps the strongest set of defensemen in the league. It's a bold move with trading away our #1 pick but to gain a guy like Darian we felt we couldn't pass up the opportunity. we look for Darian to join our #2 line opposite Adrian Aucoin and hope to cause chaos for our opponents attempting to penetrate. A look at the Alaska defensemen: L1 Lidstrom/Havelid L2 Hatcher/Aucoin L3 Bombardir/Chelios Kasparaitus ************************************************************************** 2004 NAL Studs and Duds December 12, 2003 By Jason McCorrister Don't you wish you'd drafted Pavel Datsyuk? Datsyuk is 5th in NHL scoring with 15 goals and 18 assists. He was chosen 224th overall in the NAL draft. 224th!? It's still early in the season, but let's look at who has been the studs and duds of the NHL so far this season To be named a stud, a player must perform well beyond expectations based on NAL draft position. Conversely, a dud performs well below expectations. So far this season Kevin Webber, manager of the West Coast Express, looks like a genius. In addition to stealing Datsyuk (224th), he picked up Alex Tanguay who is currently the NHL's 4th leading scorer with the 141st pick of the draft. How did he do it? Other studs include Robert Lang, 3rd in NHL scoring and taken 173rd overall. How about Ladislav Nagy? He was taken 142nd overall and is now 11th in the league in scoring. Need a goalie? The Calgary Grizzlies grabbed Vesa Toskala 329th in the draft and he is currently 3rd in the league with a save percentage of .933 after 14 games. Wow! Who says late picks don't matter? Who made the worst NAL picks? The Red Deer Avros hold the honor of taking two duds in the first two rounds of the draft. Great job Avros! Top dud so far this season is Jarome Iginla. Taken 6th in the draft due to the fact he has been re-united with Conroy and McAmmond, Iginla has struggled this season and presently sits 54th in league scoring. Goalies are always difficult to predict and this season is no exception. Imagine taking Marty Turco 5th overall and then watching him drop to 43rd in the league with a .900 save percentage. Ouch! How about playoff MVP Giguere? Taken 23rd in the draft, Giguere has had a slow start, presently floundering at 42nd in save percentage with a .905. It could be worse, however. Many players taken in the early rounds of the draft may end up as Right of Retention players this year with less than 20 games played. Aren't you glad you didn't take Forsberg or Macinnis in the first round? Forsberg (8th) may be out for the season and then return to Sweden permanently. Macinnis (11th) played only 3 games and may retire - hey, the guy's 40 years old! Drafting a guy high and then watching him sit in the press box has to be the worst kind of torture. Well, it's still early. Perhaps the duds will pick up their play and make themselves worthy of their high draft position. Then again, the studs could hit one of those late season slumps that bring them back to reality. Only time will tell. For those of you who took more duds than studs, don't worry too much. With our 14-player protection rule, you can always start from scratch next year!
