Thanks to all who submitted material, this thing is looking great! In the North American League, several teams shifted around in the standings. The Inside Shots who were tied in leading the league in the last bi-week, find themselves hard pressed as they fall from second best in their division to second worst. "Dropping eight games and going winless on the road can do that to your team this early in the season," said Coach and General Manager Mike Webb. "With the new league and all, a team's identity isn't fully deveolped with only 20 games. Besides, getting spotlighted in the newsletter is the same as having the cover on SI. We were jinxed. Hopefully the Labrador Moose will get the same treatment this week!" Those Labrador Moose are on pace to end the season with 110 points. That number might seem high, but over in the World League, the Floral Park Falcons are tearing up their league. If they continue to play their dominating form of hockey, they could end up with an amazing 124 points! Sure 124 points are good for first place in nearly every year, but in 1976-77, the NHL's Montreal Canadiens totaled 132 points in the standings. Glen Murray potted an impressive 13 goals for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the North American League, but his 21 goal total still comes up short when compared to the World League goal scoring leader, Markus Naslund. The Ibiza Corsair captain has 24 goals in the two bi-weeks, five more than the second place goal scorer, Mats Sundin. The teams still have a lot of hockey to play however, and a change in position is still possible. ************************************************************************** ALL STAR BALLOTS! With 20+ games being played, all-star ballots will begin being handed out to fans. What does this mean? It means that all owners should begin to think about who from their team deserves nomination. Following the end of the third bi-week (the current bi-week), submissions will be due. Well, actually I'll give everyone one week after this bi-week so that you can check the stats following the completion of this bi-week. Please submit one player for each position from your team, one Center, Left Wing, Right Wing, Left Defense, Right Defense and Goaltender. If a player is rated at more than one position, please use the one that the player plays on the most. Example: Mario Lemieux is rated at Center and Left Wing, but if you play him primarily at Center (meaning you only play him on the wing during special teams or 4 on 4), you shouldn't list him at LW. I'm going to track IP on this, so if you don't want to end up on my $hitlist, please get me your list. I'll then turn the list around and have everyone vote on the nominees. ************************************************************************** Campbell River has their Foote in the Brodeur by Mason Harris The Campbell River Canucks have made a trade with the Saskatoon Blades. Keith Carney and Ed Belfour are on the go and returning are Adam Foote and Martin Brodeur. "Robber (Roberto Luongo) is our number one guy, he has earned it. Eddie was unhappy in his role and it was effecting the chemistry in the dressing room. Martin Brodeur is guy that we feel very lucky to have as an insurance policy and he has the potential to push for the number one job." Harris told the press conference. "Adam Foote is a player we have pursued for two seasons now, he is a leader and will fit nicely into our scheme. It is hard to let Keith go as he is a quality player and a great team guy,but as the saying goes its just business." When asked if the Canucks are finished making moves Harris said, "Our objective is to hold onto the title and if we can improve the team then we will. We still need help up front, particularly at center. If the right player comes available hopefully we can pull the trigger on another deal." ************************************************************************** Duck Hunting Season in Peoria by Sal Tesoro Peoria, Ill- With an eye to the future, the Rivermen said farewell to one of the best players in the league, and certainly the best player on the Peoria squad, Sergei Federov. GM Sal Tesoro was overheard muttering "I can't stand Ducks" under his breath following negotiations to deal Federov and Niclas Havelid to Aberdeen. "It was a matter of perspective. Were we winning with Federov in the lineup? Not with any consistency", GM Tesoro explained. "This Rivermen team is in a building mode. We are very excited at the infusion of talent the trade generated. Mike York and Ryan Smyth are solid offensive players that can help bolster the top 2 lines. Dick Tarnstrom is a fine young defenseman that will fit nicely into Havelid's slot on the #1 defensive unit. But, we are very excited at the addition of Jason King. In his current season, he has shown a nose for the net. That's something you can't teach young players. We hope he continues to develop throughout the season." In full, the trade was Federov and Havelid to the Aberdeen squad in return for Mike York, Ryan Smyth, Jason King and Dick Tarnstrom. Inside sources report that GM Tesoro was very disappointed at the current work habits being displayed by Havelid and Federov as members of the Mighty Ducks. Time will tell if the gamble was worth it. ************************************************************************** Grizzly Speak by John Himann "As a first time Coach and GM I was glad simply to have a place to play the game," said the Calgary Grizzlies GM, Jonathon Himann, at the beginning of the season. Apparently he hadn't expected to get off to a good start this year. And after ten games he and his team hadn't been in an envious position. They were under five hundred at home and had a difficult time producing goals from anyone but their Power Line. Their disappointing finish in the first block, being merely fourth in their Division, prompted some soul searching. "We've really pumped it up this time around, pounding out the wins from around the boards, and putting the guts into OT and come from behind wins." Said Mike Sillinger after the majority of the Second block was finished. And they should feel justifiably proud. Aside from a couple of pounding by the Brandon Wheat Kings the Bloakc has gone very well for them. Producing enough goals to win, holding the line late in a period and simply out muscling the opposition are all areas they have improved upon recently. "Now only if we can actually learn how to play well at home, we'll be the best in the league," boasted Tomas Holmstrom. ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE RANKINGS by Dan Irvine Pre-Season Current GF\GA TEAM Ranking Ranking GP W L T RT PTS GF GA Ratio GF Avg GA Avg Labrador 3 1 20 12 5 3 0 27 81 49 32 4.05 2.45 Alaska 1 2 21 10 7 2 2 24 65 60 5 3.10 2.86 Wellington 9 3 21 10 5 6 0 26 75 53 22 3.57 2.52 Brandon 4 4 21 11 8 2 0 24 83 70 13 3.95 3.33 Inside Shots 2 5 20 7 10 3 0 17 50 51 -1 2.50 2.55 Iowa 8 6 20 12 6 1 1 26 59 58 1 2.95 2.90 Calgary 6 7 20 10 7 2 1 23 70 59 11 3.50 2.95 Kent Kounty 5 8 21 11 10 0 0 22 65 67 -2 3.10 3.19 Red Deer 13 9 20 8 6 4 2 22 58 55 3 2.90 2.75 Kentucky 12 10 21 8 7 5 1 22 64 71 -7 3.05 3.38 Saratoga 7 11 22 9 7 5 1 24 58 64 -6 2.64 2.91 Seattle 10 12 21 7 10 3 1 18 60 65 -5 2.86 3.10 West Coast 11 13 20 5 11 4 0 14 49 65 -16 2.45 3.25 Hartford 14 14 20 3 13 2 2 10 32 72 -40 1.60 3.60 The biggest surprise of block 2 was the slump that Inside Shots fell into. With a pre-season ranking at 2nd overall and with only 2 losses in block one they only won 1 game in block 2. Look for GM Mike Webb to mamke some moves. Wellington has had 2 solid blocks and has improved their ranking to number 3 and appear to be a very tough opponent implementing a successful trap system. As teams settle in and managers get to know what their teams can do look for some moves to be made in block 3 as teams try a fill some holes. ************************************************************************** Important Dates December 7th - Strategy files due to opponents December 19th - Game reports/exports due to the commissioner December 26th - All-Star Ballots Due! ************************************************************************** NORTH AMERICAN LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON STANDINGS: SITTLER DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Labrador Moose 20 12 5 3 0 27 .600 81 49 6- 2- 2- 0 6- 3- 1- 0 Wellington Dukes 21 10 5 6 0 26 .476 75 63 6- 3- 2- 0 4- 2- 4- 0 Alaska Aces 21 10 7 2 2 24 .476 65 60 7- 2- 1- 0 3- 5- 1- 2 Kent Kounty Killer 21 11 10 0 0 22 .524 65 67 7- 4- 0- 0 4- 6- 0- 0 Kentucky Ice Tiger 21 8 7 5 1 22 .381 64 71 6- 4- 2- 0 2- 3- 3- 1 Inside Shots 20 7 10 3 0 17 .350 50 51 4- 4- 2- 0 3- 6- 1- 0 Hartford Whalers 20 3 13 1 2 10 .150 32 72 2- 5- 2- 0 1- 8- 0- 1 ORR DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Iowa Wolves 20 12 6 1 1 26 .600 59 58 6- 3- 0- 1 6- 3- 1- 0 Brandon Wheat King 21 11 8 2 0 24 .524 83 70 5- 4- 1- 0 6- 4- 1- 0 Saratoga Sting 22 9 7 5 1 24 .409 58 64 4- 3- 3- 0 5- 4- 2- 1 Calgary Grizzlies 20 10 7 2 1 23 .500 70 59 4- 5- 1- 0 6- 2- 1- 1 Red Deer Avros 20 8 6 4 2 22 .400 58 55 6- 3- 1- 0 2- 3- 3- 2 Seattle Tsunami 21 7 10 3 1 18 .333 60 65 4- 5- 1- 0 3- 5- 2- 1 West Coast Express 20 5 11 4 0 14 .250 49 65 2- 5- 3- 0 3- 6- 1- 0 ************************************************************************** WORLD LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON STANDINGS: HOWE DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Floral Park Falco 21 15 4 2 0 32 .714 68 42 9- 1- 1- 0 6- 3- 1- 0 Aberdeen Flying 20 12 4 3 1 28 .600 71 54 6- 1- 3- 0 6- 3- 0- 1 Monarch Lions 20 11 4 3 2 27 .550 59 49 7- 2- 1- 0 4- 2- 2- 2 Portland Buckaroo 21 8 11 2 0 18 .381 64 74 4- 7- 0- 0 4- 4- 2- 0 Peoria Rivermen 21 7 11 1 2 17 .333 61 71 6- 4- 0- 2 1- 7- 1- 0 Ottawa Axemen 21 6 12 3 0 15 .286 68 86 3- 5- 2- 0 3- 7- 1- 0 Barbary Coast Wha 20 5 15 0 0 10 .250 40 58 3- 7- 0- 0 2- 8- 0- 0 MANIAGO DIVISION GP W L T OL Pts Pct GF GA Home Road Hibbing Stink Badg 20 12 4 2 2 28 .600 56 49 7- 1- 1- 1 5- 3- 1- 1 Campbell River Can 20 13 6 1 0 27 .650 65 38 7- 3- 0- 0 6- 3- 1- 0 Saginaw Sentinels 21 12 8 1 0 25 .571 62 53 6- 4- 0- 0 6- 4- 1- 0 Kodiak Attack 20 11 8 1 0 23 .550 66 65 5- 4- 1- 0 6- 4- 0- 0 Ibiza Corsairs 22 9 9 2 2 22 .409 59 60 4- 4- 1- 1 5- 5- 1- 1 Saskatoon Blades 20 6 13 0 1 13 .300 48 66 2- 8- 0- 0 4- 5- 0- 1 Dakota Mustangs 21 5 13 3 0 13 .238 60 82 2- 6- 2- 0 3- 7- 1- 0 ************************************************************************** The corrected steps for playing and reporting your games. 1. Q: There was some confusion with the proceedure for playing home games and sending out your road manager. What is the correct proceedure? A: Here is the corrected step by step proceedure for playing and reporting your games. 1. Download the league file 1a. World League - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WSHLWL/files 1b. Unzip the files into your SOMH/DATA folder, overwriting if necessary. Make sure that SOMH is not running. 3. Start SOMH 4. Create a computer manager and export it. 5. The offensive minded forward racked up 24 points, with seven multi-point games, including two four point affairs (2 goals, 2 assists). Sergei Fedorov (CAL) - 8 goals, 5 assists Glen Murray (BWK) - 13 goals, 11 assists Mats Sundin (SAR) - 10 goals, 2 assists Block 1: Mats Sundin (SAR) Block 2: Glen Murray (BWK) World League Lots of players to choose from, but the nod has to go to the only nominated defenseman, Mathieu Schnider. Without the veteran defenseman, the Portland Buckaroos would have sunk to last place. Andrew Cassels (FPF) - 3 goals, 11 assists Adam Deadmarsh (ABE) - 9 goals, 1 assist, 2 GWG Pavol Demitra (OTT) - 9 goals, 5 assists Peter Forsberg (OTT) - 6 goals, 13 assists Marian Hossa (KOD) - 6 goals, 3 assists, 3 GWG Mats Sundin (HIB) - 9 goals, 2 assists Joe Thornton (OTT) - 4 goals, 16 assists Mathieu Schnider (POR) - 4 goals, 10 assists, +9 Block 1: Mats Sundin (HIB) Block 2: Mathieu Schnider (POR) ************************************************************************** Goaltender of the Week North American League Two standout goaltenders this bi-week, Marty Turco and Ed Belfour. While Turco had one more shutout, the nod has to go to Belfour, who's outstanding play has allowed Calgary to jump into the leader pack in the west. Marty Turco (LAB) - 7-3-1, 3 shutouts, 2.84 GAA, 92.20 sv% Ed Belfour (CAL) - 5-3-2, 2 shutouts, 2.29 GAA, 93.07 sv% Block 1: Garth Snow (KKK) Block 2: Ed Belfour (CAL) World League If it weren't for three horrible games by Turco, the Saginaw Sentinel goaltender would have been a shoo-in for goaltender of the week honors. The bad outings were a blessing for young goaltending sensation, Roberto Luongo though as he skates away with the award. Roberto Luongo (CRC) - 1.64 GAA, 1 shutout, 93.67 sv% Dwayne Roloson (FPF) - 2.01 GAA, 1 shutout, 94.57 sv% Marty Turco (SAG) - 1 shutout, 1.50 GAA in top games, 2.83 GAA w/bad ones Block 1: Corey Schwab (ABE) Block 2: Roberto Luongo (CRC) ************************************************************************** ASSOCIATE LIST: SINCE GP If you're still an active associate, and aren't on this list, please get in contact with me.
