There are some members who have limited storage space with their mailboxes and receiving several large export files can chew that space up in no time. If you're playing in both leagues, make sure you use the correct list for the team that you're reporting. Thanks for double checking! In addition, double check your road managers. There were several mistakes in the first block (yeah, I know we're all a bit rusty), but they could have all been spotted and fixed before being sent out. Remember, if you need help, you have the option of asking! I've also included a manager primer for creating your instructions. It is located below in the newsletter. Last word, I found it disappointing that I didn't get a single thing from anyone in the World League, no player of the nominations, no articles, nothing. This begs the question, should I simply drop the World League from the newsletter and publish it solely for the North American League, which seems to support it by submitting material? I suppose you'll have to read next bi-week's issue to find out what will happen. World League members, take this is as your wake-up call. ************************************************************************** Week One/Two Review For the Hartford Whalers in the North American League, this is the start of a very long season as they go winless in their first ten games. Their goaltender, Martin Brodeur will have an even longer season if his team can only score 1.3 goals per game, the fewest in either league. Joining them in the cellar are the West Coast Express with their single win. But the Express have four ties to their credit, giving them three times as many points in the standings. Sitting on top of the standings are three teams, all of them in one division, Kent Kounty Killer Kittens, Inside Shots, and the Kentucky Ice Tigers with 14 points each. However look for a possible change in the order as the Kittens have played the most games (12) out of all teams in the North American League. Based on points, you might overlook the Aberdeen Flying Scotsmen who currently have 13. This number may seem small when compared to the Floral Park Falcons' 18, but looking over to the games played, the Scotsmen have only played eight games. In a league where road wins are mined like gold, Aberdeen must have found a rich vein, netting four road wins in the first block of games. So you might have overlooked Aberdeen, but I'm sure you didn't miss the goals allowed by last year's cup winner, Campbell River. The Canucks have allowed a scant 15 goals in thier nine games. They're the only team in either league to hold a team goals against lower than 2.00. Does this figure ensure a repeat appearance in this year's playoffs? Not necessarily, as they still have 71 regualr season games to play. ************************************************************************** 8-Player Blockbuster Trade! By: Jason McCorrister With a battle heating up for first place in the Orr Division, two teams completed a blockbuster trade last night that promises to make things interesting. Key players in the trade include young, promising forward Kyle Calder of the Red Deer Avros and veteran, re- born forward Cory Stillman of the Calgary Grizzlies. Red Deer Avros trade - Kyle Calder, Jan Bulis, Mark Messier, Martin Prusek, RED04#4 Calgary Grizzlies trade - Cory Stillman, Wes Walz, Darren McCarty, and Sebastien Caron Avros' manager Jason McCorrister said, "This deal allows us to beef up our specialty teams. In particular, we needed a left winger who could get the puck to Iggy so we really wanted Cory Stillman. As well, we couldn't pass up the chance to add another character player like Walz to our lineup - now we have three perennial Selke candidates on our team with Madden and Peca also playing up the middle." Avros also added tough guy Darren McCarty in the deal. McCarty is expected to join Adam Mair and John Madden on one of the hardest checking lines in the league. McCorrister said, "We want teams to just hate playing us. We might not have the scoring of some of the other teams, but we've got a solid defensive game now." The Calgary Grizzlies gained a lot of depth with a pair of young two- way forwards in Calder and Bulis. Their defensive work should help give Calgary better puck control and a more balanced game. General manager Jon Himann said, "We needed some solid players to carry the puck and feed our scorers and we think we have that now!" As part of the blockbuster deal, Veteran Mark Messier will also add proven leadership to the dressing room. Who made the most ground in this deal? It's too early to tell - ask the managers at the end of the season. However, it might just be possible that both teams will come up as winners in this deal. Calgary owner Jonathon Himann was caught saying, "Hopefully this plugs that defensive hole where Stillman, Gratton and Bure were. They started to complain that the other teams controlling the puck and that thy never got to play with it. We told them to just get off of their asses and suck it up, but 8 games later with their horrible plus minus rating and being utterly sick of their whining…." "Hopefully Calder, Messier and company will have a much more mature attitude and better defensive capabilities. We figure out that we need to play more responsibility in our end, hopefully ending up with the puck to pot in the net on the other end of the ice. The top 3 ranked teams remain in the top 3 but there were a couple of big moves made by 2 Western teams, Kentucky 12th to 4th and Red Deer 13th to 9th. Kentucky's depth down the middle is paying off and their defencemen have handled the pressure well to date. Meanwhile Red Deer's young stars are showing no sign of weakness. Red Deer also picked up of Stillman and Walz improved their depth at center, look for Red Deer to remain in the top half of the rankings. A team going in the other direction is Brandon who went from 4th ranked to 10th, goaltending was a big problem for them in block one and as a team gave up 4 goals per game. Outlook: Watch for several teams to make moves in block 2. Brandon's management is not at all pleased with their teams performance, other teams such as Wellington, Iowa, Kent Kounty and Kentucky may make moves to help ensure they stay or improve their rankings and fill any needs they may have. One of the top 3 teams may also may moves to solidify their rankings. All in all should make for a very interesting block 2. ************************************************************************** North American Insight by Jonathon Himann Ties, polyester or otherwise, seem to be the future for the NAL. Of the 70-odd games that have been played almost one quarter have ended regulation without anything being decided. This bodes well for the competition and suspense during the season, but it leaves me scratching my head to try and conclude anything about the season except for the miserable finish of the Hartford Whalers. What is the cause of this? Why hasn’t anyone dominated the league yet? A quick look at the statistics shows that this isn’t the route to follow. Everything is contested. The scoring leaders, for instance, are only separated by a single measly small number; Bondra and Palffy at 9 followed quickly by Arnott, Murray, and Sundin at 8. Assists are just as contested with Federov, Lemeiux, Marchant and Satan leading the pack at 12. Sundin and Federov lead the point race at 19. Yet none of these players have led their team to a run away lead. Plus minus is just the same. A man with a two (2!) defence, Mike Rathje, is leading the league in that category and is followed closely by few others. Yet his team is in fourth place. What’s happening here? Will goalies provide any other sort of future sight? The save percentages range across the whole board. The top being the Kentucky’s Dunham with a .943 ,a nd the bottom being the sting with a .899 save percentage. Yet only two points separate these teams. J.S. Gigeure playing for the Avros has a .911 at the end of the block, Checkmanek for the wolves a .925, Belfour for the Grizzlies a .914 and Thibault for the Sting a .899. None of these have managed to life their respective teams above the pakc. These statistics also range across the spectrum and don’t indicate a direction for the future of the season. It seems that we are reduced to reading a magic eight ball to predict who’s going to win this year. Is it The Aces, who were predicted to win at the beginning of the year, or the shots who started with an amazing unbroken streak? Is it going to be the Wolves or the Kittens? Will the Avros, who should be in the bottom of the league, steal everybody’s thunder an run away with the title? Will the eight ball tell us? I’ll let you know next time. Trying to read the future from the collected statistics is futile, as the Goals for / Goals against doesn’t indicate much. The team with the largest differential (on the plus side) is fourth in the Orr Division. The leader of that division has a zero differential. Here are the minimum requirements for your computer manager. Dress 12 forwards, 5 defensemen, plus two goalies and one optional skater who can be either a forward or defenseman. Make sure you check the correct boxes for teh players you want! Starting with your forward lines, you must have at least FOUR forward lines, with 12 different skaters. It's easy enough to call them Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, and Line 4. The players must play their carded position(s). If they don't have LW, then you can't play that player on the left wing. Additional forward lines you'll need, 3-man PK, two different 4-man PK units, 4-man PP, two different 5-man PP units, and 3 OT lines that skate withan open center position. The two sets of standard special teams lines require that no player be assigned to both units. If a player is listed on Power Play #1, he can't play on Power Play #2. Defensive lines, if you go with six defensemen, you could simply skate three different pairs of defensemen. However, the WSHL allows you to get by with only five defensemen. If this is the route you're going to go, you'll be double shifting a DIFFERENT defenseman each period. Here's how you set up your pairs. Number your five defensemen 1-5. You then begin to pair up you defensemen, starting with 1-2, 3-4, and then double shift number one, 1-5. This is fine for the first period, but in the second you have to change #1 with someone else. In this example, you go with 1-2, 3-4, and 2-5. For period three, you have to change your third pair one more time, 1-2, 3-4, 3-5. All told you have five different pairs of defensemen, 1-2, 3-4, 1-5, 2-5, and 3-5. Defensive special teams lines, you'll use two PK pairs, and two PP pairs. For the power play pairs, you may substitue one defenseman for one forward who is rated 'POINT **', or 'POINT *'. On the power play, a defenseman may play either defensive position, regardless of what he is carded as playing. For example, a defenseman rated at LD only, may play RD on the power play. Defensemen must play their listed position(s) during a shorthanded situation. Line orders, the tab that lists which sequence of lines your team plays during each period, will use the lines which you have created as above. Each period has its own set of lines, so be sure to have the correct, full set of lines entered. You must play 12 forwards in the first and second periods. If you're using the simple four line forward sequence, your line order should look something like this: Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, Line 4. For your defense, you must remember that no player may double shift more than once. If you're using the five defensive pairs, you should see something like this: Period 1 - Pair 1, Pair 2, Pair 3, Period 2 - Pair 1, Pair 2, Pair 4, Period 3 - Pair 1, Pair 2, Pair 5. For overtime, you must have three forward lines, and three defensive lines. One forward and one defenseman may double shift during the five minute overtime period. Maximizing your forward attacker In the third period, and only in the third period may a forward double shift. The simplest version to get a player to double shift is to copy/create a 5th line that duplicates one of your four standard forward lines and replace one player with the player you want to double shift. When it comes to sequencing the lines in the 3rd period, you simply replace the 5th line with the line you copied. Here's an example: say you're the Inside Shots and want to double shift DANIEL ALFREDSSON who normally plays on the first line. Using the copy/replace method, you take your standard line 2 as seen below and switch Alfredsson with one of the existing players. Line 2 : ERIC DAZE - BRENDAN MORRISON - DANY HEATLEY Line 5 : ERIC DAZE - BRENDAN MORRISON - DANIEL ALFREDSSON Now make sure that you rename the Line to something that you aren't using, or you'll replace that line. When you make your way to the line order page, you'll replace Line 2 with Line 5. A more complicated method requires you to copy a line, replace the player and then bump the replaced player to another line, which may or may not cause you to bump that player to another line. In the end, you might have another four lines, thus you'd skate: Line 5, Line 6, Line 7 and Line 8 in the third period. Does the manager never end? There are more options in creating your manager, individual player choices (penetration, shooting, passing, skating and icing), line strategies (offense 1-3/defense 0-3), agressive/defensive options when trailing or leading, deflections and intimidation.
