FIL Competitions


  •  Luge competitions during Olympic Winter Games (OWG)

  •  FIL Championships

    World Championships (WM)
      in each sport's year, with the exception of the year in which the OWG will be
      staged
    Continental championships for women and men
      in the sport's year in which the OWG will be staged and two years later
    World Junior Championships (WJM)
      in each sport's year

  •  International Competitions

    World Cup (WC)
       at least 8 races (except OWG season)
    Junior World Cup (JWC)
       6 races
    Nations Cup (NC)
       Staged in one event with JWC
    Other international competitions



Disciplines



FIL competitions are carried out in the following disciplines:
  •  Women - singles
  •  Men - singles
  •  Doubles
  •  Team competition (compulsory at FIL championships)
     A team consists of: 1 woman, 1 man, and 1 doubles team

During World and Continental Championships in the general class, the title holders have an additional right to start.



Seeded Groups



Seeded groups start in all disciplines of the FIL competitions (except in the team competition).

Composition of seeded groups general class:

  •  Group A = 12 athletes and/or double athlete teams as per name
  •  Group B = 12 athletes and/or double athlete teams as per nation
  •  Group C = 12 athletes and/or double athlete teams as per nation
The positions in the seeded groups result from the point rankings of the three previous World Cup races.



Start Order



In the 1st run the athletes start in the following order: group A, group B, group C, remaining group.

The start order of the 2nd run at all FIL competitions (except OWG) is a follows:
  •  31st to last place
     (according to the 1st run)

  •  30th to 1st place
     (according to the 1st run)
Start order team competition:
  •  Men
     Nation start number 1 to last start number

  •  Women
     Nation last start number to 1st start number

  •  Doubles
     According to the ranked classification after the men's and women's runs,
     beginning with the team of the last placed nation.

For the results achieved in a World Cup competition, the following points per competition are awarded:

Team Competition


The ranking during the team competition is done according to the total cumulative time of the three sleds.




Sled


The basic components of a sled are:
  •  2 ruuners
  •  2 blades
  •  Sling seat or pod seat
  •  2 bridges
The maximum weight including attached accessories is:
  •  23 kg for a single sled
  •  27 kg for a double sled
  •  14 kg for a youth sled



Individual Supplemental Weights



Additional weights may be carried in singles' competitions for women, men, junior women and junior men, as well as in doubles, general class and juniors.



The additional weight may not exceed

- Women, Junior Women 2, Junior Men 1 10 kg
- Men, Junior Men 2       13 kg
- Junior Women 1   8 kg
- Doubles (Gen. class and juniors) 10 kg

 

The purpose of this is to create equal chances for light and heavy athletes.

Artificial Tracks



Artificial tracks are luge tracks which have been specially constructed for the sport of luge.

A difference is made between artificial luge tracks with or without refrigeration system.
  Men Women / Doubles
Minimum length 1000 m 800 m
Maximum length 1300 m 1050 m
Artificial tracks are commissioned by the FIL Technical Commission.


More Interesting Facts



  •  Competitions may be held in extreme weather conditions with a
     temperature as low as – 25°C
  •  If an athlete loses any item during a run he/she will be disqualified
  •  The time is measured with an accuracy of 1000th of a second
  •  In case of snowfall the track is swept after a certain number of athletes
  •  The athlete has to pass the finish line in contact with his/her sled
  •  In order to participate in a competition the athletes require a valid license
     (medical check-up, valid insurance)
  •  The athlete must wear the FIL safety helmet
