| "...the thought that went into his designs of sets and costumes for plays on Biblical themes appears to have prompted Luftglas to return to these stories to portray the essence of the figures from the Bible at their most dramatic moments. His oils include depictions of heroes such as Jephthah, tragic characters and their conflicts such as Cain and Abel, Esau, Hannah and Ruth and symbols of motherly love like Jocheved, mother of Moses. He displayed no interest, however, in painting them as patriotic figures that might be linked to contemporary Israeli experience. Rather, Luftglas was attracted by the universal qualities of the characters, as symbols of human emotions, roles and conflicts." |
