Council closes school in Valladolid where 4 cancer cases found

3 January 2002

The local education authority of Castilla and Len has ordered the temporary closure of the Garca Quintana college to allow a group of experts to investigate the building. Among students 4 cases of cancer have been found which their parents attribute to 36 mobile phone masts nearby. On Dec 21 a local judge ordered that the masts be turned off and taken down.

A Valladolid council representative Jess Garca Galvn, stated yesterday that the health authorities considered the cancers found in the students up to the end of December to be relevant. The fourth cancer case sounded a strong alarm. Neverthe less Galvn said that a group of independent and professional epidemiologists had "totally discounted" any relationship between the masts and cancer in the children. Now another study will be undertaken. Teaching at the closed school of 470 pupils will now take place at Francisco Giner de los Ros college while the study is carried out. Parents consider the closure justified and want the causes of the cancer
