A Gardener of Dreams
With roughened hands and faltered tread
He tottered through the mulchen bed
Till close he drew, and then he said,
"This blossom's fragile, be tender, you.
Don't breathe for you will kill it."
The seasons blew and summer passed
The leaves lay loose and shadows cast
By gnarled limbs whose day had past
When summers beauty was all around,
Before blew breath and killed it.
A dream, he knew and handled well
His vision keen, this all could tell.
Where it could grow, he knew so well.
With hardened hands, yet tender touch
He fought the things that kill it.
Still time did march and onward go
Till he succumbed to dreaded foe.
And feebly did his glimmer glow
As petals fell and dreams were crushed;
As age marched in and killed him.
So summer comes, yet I don't care
For blossoms fade in stifling air.
Protector 's gone; I am his heir.
But touch to save a dream, I lack
As time blows on and kills it.
