Beat-Charge 4/28/01

First match under the lights of this young season and although the crowd was smaller than the first match, it was both large and boisterous. Unfortunately, there was another scoreless draw. However, there were many good signs coming out of this match. The defense was rock solid, and as much as I hate to say this (having been a forward), all good teams have a solid defense.

The offense also looked better and more dangerous through the match. Several quality chances were generated, especially by Sawa Homare. She is proving to be very dangerous in the front. Sun Wen came in after halftime, showing that her fitness it returning. Hopefully she will be playing the full 90 minutes before too long.

After the match, my friends and I wanted so much to get Sun Wen's autograph (I have been a Sun Wen fan for years). She was the last to start signing autographs (presumably she was loosening up, still a little tight from injury), though when she did, she seemed to be having fun. When she got to me and my friends (we had signs through the match cheering for her in Chinese), she seemed really surprised to hear me speaking Chinese. We got her autograph and took pictures. She was really awesome. The fans here in Atlanta are really warming up to her and I am sure her "Sunny" (the nickname given her by her Beat teammates) attitude will shine brightly, especially as her English improves.

Draws are disappointing, but there was so much positive to bring from this match. The defense is solid and the offense seems to be getting it together. It seems only a matter of time before the Beat arise at the top of the WUSA.
